I got my 940 from its original owner who was a retired Volvo mechanic that really needed the money. He loved that car so much that he offered to half price any repairs I needed for it as long as I brought it to him to do because he loved the thing so much.
And he kept his word, I took that thing to him about a dozen times over 6 years before he and his wife moved to new york state.
Good guy
They are quite possibly the best most reliable cars ever made. Easily get over 500K miles with proper care and maintenance.

Mr Regular is harder on Volvo than any other make of car- I wish he would review a P3 XC70 because this is a more modern car with a cult following that gets almost zero attention on CZcams yet is in many folks minds one of the best cars ever made

In high school my wife drove a '93 940 and ran over a ladder on the interstate at 75 mph. Flipped three times, landed on the wheels, and she walked away with a fractured collarbone. They truly are the safest cars ever.

Almost seems like not only would she be minimally injured, the car might even still be usable after something like that. Few scratches to the paint is all.
My friend ran over a ladder in his Dodge Shadow doing 75+ on the interstate. Besides feeling like a rumble strip and waking the rest of the passengers, nothing else happened. How the hell do you flip a car 3x running over a ladder?

This car is a summary of my childhood. We had 2 of these, the final one was a 97 turbo estate with all the trimmings. I loved that car. Found it again last year after 21 years and almost bought it back to keep the memories of my dad alive, but it was too far gone to make it worth the effort.
Volvos are never too far gone, my 89 740 was sat in a front garden on some grass for 10 years+ and with a little refurb and some fresh parts it runs mint
@@Cottsify yeah I could have made a decent runner out of it no problem. But I wanted it to be as good as when my dad drove it from new and I was a 13 year old happy-go-lucky kid. This thing needed 5k to 7k euros to get there. It would have been a foolish exercise in burning cash that I couldn't justify, already having 3 cars, 2 young kids and a wife who also like to spend time with me every now and then. In a way, going to see the relic of his old car was some form of closure didn't even know I still needed after 20 years. It was nice to see it but it didn't feel like our car anymore, so whatever I thought I came to find was long gone and had moved on without me. Or maybe, just maybe, I'm investing way too much emotional context into an old car :)
@@fransb8543 I have a similar feeling with my grandfathers (RIP) old car. My father sold it to a friend of mine. Sometimes I see it around town, beat up and rusty. In some way I want it back but know it wouldn't be a necessary buy, just emotional driven.
And yet, at least here in the Netherlands, good ones are worth a lot these days. Enough to warrant a restoration even, and parts are relatively easy and cheap to come by because you can rip them off the sedans that aren't worth shit for some reason.

As a guy who watched his dad die after emergency surgery in 2021, and his grandmother dying in Hospice care three months ago, that hit a little close to the bone for a Monday morning fellas. As a University Professor by trade my old man preferred Saabs, and as a child of the great depression Nani drove the same 1990 Corolla she bought used from Hertz in 1992 for 25 years. Excellent work nonetheless, big like.

I'm sorry for your loss. This hit close to home for me too. In 2021 I got sick and had to abandon my independent life to move back in with my parents so that they could care for me. It happened so fast I never really got to grieve the life I was losing before I had to leave, there was time to save my life but not a lot of extra time for material sentimentalism.
Well, If ya gotta go 25 years with a car as an appliance, a 1990 Corolla is a excellent choice.

Reminds me of my aunt’s Volvo 240 that plied the roads in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was the closest thing to an automotive tank, at that time, and was well respected in often vicious San Juan traffic.
This may be my new favorite RCR episode. It's probably because of the moment in my life that it's hitting at, but it has me thinking deeply about my family and the relationships that comprise it. We never had a Volvo, and the nicest car my parents ever purchased is a currently-12-year-old BMW currently sitting at over 100,000 miles that has had multiple periods of more than a year of disuse during our stewardship because we _definitely_ can't afford dealer maintenance prices, and getting the parts third party is still expensive AF, to say nothing of setting aside the time to install them and then doing that. We had to go to the "supplemental" food pantry when I was a kid, like yeah we have a roof over our heads and _some_ food, but not enough to securely feed a family of 4. There were times we would go without electricity or running water for several days because we couldn't afford to pay the back payment until Mom and Dad got paid. But we made it through, more or less. To quote the New Radicals, "We're flat broke, but hey, we do it in style." I never thought of my family as upper middle class because of how much struggle we went through for comparatively little, but this has me thinking a lot about that, because the statements strike so true to me. I _guess_ you could say my parents _aspired_ to be upper middle class, which might be more insufferable than the _actual_ bourgeoisie, since insecurity breeds entitlement.

If you know the feeling of watching your parents parents float checks at Meijers or Kmarts on a Wednesday or Thursday knowing that by the time the individual store sent them to corporate and corporate cashed them that they'd have eventually gotten paid or deposited their paycheck, welcome. You're safe here.
I live in the Pacific Northwest, and there is definitely a large fanbase for these, who I would describe as follows:
- Works in education, specifically liberal arts or geography.
- Wardrobe consistents entirely of hiking clothes bought from the REI co-op.
- Enjoys foraging for mushrooms and bird watching on the weekends. But don't call it "hiking", it's a "nature walk".
- Lives in a house built in 1924 that they've been updating gradually since they bought it, but all they seem to have accomplished is finding more space for their indoor plant collection.
- Can only hug them for a few seconds because their entire person smells of a damp mustiness, reminiscent of an old, forgotten couch.
- No taller than 5' 4"
- Knows songs about cedar trees.
- Goes to political rallies, but never raises their voice above what they would use to address a classroom full of students.
- Has strong opinions about Starbucks and their ethics, but doesn't make a racket about it. Instead, they get their coffee from a small, independent roaster down the street and their tea from a vendor at Pike Place Market.
And they're moving to Portland after the current school year.
Really? I'm a Seattle resident, and most old Volvo owners I know love history, folkpunk, and have a stock of guns in their trunk.

Looks like you're deeply involved in that environment.
My take on the "as seniors, we want our lessons to be valued" line: some kids are brats and will never learn from someone else's advice until they experience the reason for it themselves. But most kids just don't take the advice of their elders at face value. If you want them to listen to you and take what you say seriously so they can learn from your experience, then justify it for them. Explain how you came to learn this lesson and why it is important to them. It'll make them more likely to listen to you. While many adults find it difficult to lower themselves by admitting that they've made mistakes in life that these lessons derive from, it is important to provide the context for your juniors so they don't feel tempted to dismiss the reasoning the same way they ignore people who use the appeal from authority fallacy.
This is why when young people say ok boomer they're missing out on the experiences and lessons learned by those who came before. We should respect the experience of those who have been there and done that.
Why don't rich parents beat their kids ?

As all of Sweden will tell you, these are practical, reliable, comfortable cars that you can have fun with in the snow. Also stupidly easy to get some extra power out of. Even if it´s the low pressure turbo you can get over 200hp without spending more than 100$. Though that will come at the price of reliability as the added boost means you need to do something about the head gasket, cause that will go sooner or later.
In the USA we only got one turbo version, with 7 psi from a small turbo, around 160 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque. It's practically routine for enthusiast owners to add performance chips and a manual boost controller, and increase those numbers easily by running 10-14 psi.
Head gasket issues? On these? You must be mistaken because these never have head gasket issues not up until about 350-400whp atleast with over 1.5-2 bars of boost. These cars are very overengineered and bulletproof.

@@henryvanderwater6974 maybe, they are really the only weakpoint on the engine. The 13mm rods handle about 300hp~ reliably but some have pushed them to 350-400 with low torque.
I have had a 940 sedan in Russia for 5 years, and while i had to move out of country due the recent events, I deeply miss this car, and honestly wherever i settle down, if those cars are available there i'll get one again. It's cheap, sturdy as hell, mine had M47 manuall gearbox which went out after too much abuse (and still managed to survive another 400km without any drama), swapped to M90 manual gearbox, with 3.73 rear end, it was anything but silent and polite. The fun on snowy/rainy roads, it was doing with so much ease, without a single breakdown (apart from that gearbox swap). And the motor with 340k km on the clock was doing just great. Despite any cliche about it being boring parents cars, with manual and a nice gearing, it's a fun machine, and a great LEGO do-it-yourself- kinda thing, if you want better tune, or different camshaft, rear end etc. And you know that after all the abuse on frozen lakes, or snowy roads deep in the woods, it'll get back home easily under it's own power and in warmth and comfort. And those square-ish fabric seats, theres something very resembling of being at home about them.
I drove a '92 Volvo 240 for 7 years. I miss that car every day, only car I ever regret getting rid of. Damn I love an old Volvo, and I miss the world it was built in. Thank you for bringing me some nostalgia!
My dad had a bunch of Volvos when I was a kid (740, 850, v70) this brings so many memories. Our neighbor was a uni teacher and had a Volvo 960 and a 240DL. These used to be fancy (I lived in France then) back in the day. When I think of the 850, I feel the need to call my Dad for no specific reason lol. Wanna thank him for taking us on so many holidays in that car. Germany, UK, Italy, Autria, French Riviera, Ski resorts in Savoy/Switzerland... Good times. I specifically cherish the time we drove to a ski resort once, I was playing on my game boy color. Stuck in traffic, heavy snow. Some guy pulls next to us. He drives an e39. There is a girl my age in the back seat. We look at each other. We look at each others' cars. We smiled. Our dads got out to help each other putting some chains as it was getting slippery. We then all pull over at the resort's parking lot. The other guy loves the Volvo. I ended up seeing the girl again during ski lessons. Good times. It was in Feb 1999, time flies.
Got handed down a 93’ 940 in high school back in 2010. Loved the hell out of that car. It was “quirky” and everyone at school knew me as the wagon guy. That wagon took a drunk driver ramming into me from behind at full speed (pause) like a damn champ. That car deserved better.

This video really hits home because I own a '91 740 turbo and it's almost exactly the same. Wagon body, tan interior, but in black. The B230FT is an absolute tank of a powerplant and the body is sturdy and stable, same can't be said for some of the electronics. Bought it in March of 2020 for $1800 and spent the early pandemic fixing her up. Odometer broke at 222k before I bought it and I'd guess it's at around 270k now with plenty of life left in her.
I love this review. My parents had an absolutely immaculate 945 Turbo in dark forest green with a tan leather interior. It gave them 10s of thousands of miles of comfortable and reliable service. My dad sold it to some guy in Chicago and last I heard it was still on the road. My parents always drove Volvos, but as a teen, I wanted nothing to do with them. After the transmission on my Grand Prix GTP blew up, I was in need of a new car. I bought an 03 V70 T5 from our family mechanic and Volvo enthusiast and absolutely fell in love with it. It's currently sitting at 410k miles and shows no signs of giving up. Fast forward 15 years and my wife and I are Volvo enthusiasts (in fact we had our first date in the back of my V70). I also love the community that these cars have. I've been a part of a lot of different car communities and Volvo definitely seems to be the most down-to-Earth and friendly. Anyway, I'm off to call my mom!
When you were talking about imaginary driver and purpose of this volvo it hit close to home. I remembered being late everywhere after hearing the "opinion" on everything that drags on seemingly forever, while being driven quite slowly and not listening to the radio because "it's loud and annoying"... I thought about my mom with her v70 which really became empty this year, when me and my younger brother both moved out in space of few weeks. Crazy how much food for thought can reside in car reviews. Thank you, Mr. Regular!
I love my 95 940 (b230ft), it's practical with my family of 6, rear facing 3rd row and fun being rwd with a LSD even before upping the boost to 13psi. It's by far one of the, if not THE most reliable vehicle I'll ever drive, pushing 550,000 miles on the stock motor/trans/turbo. I also have an 89 240 NA b230 with 16v heads which is also a blast.
Please keep writing videos in this style, Mr. Regular and Roman. Deep, personal analysis of a car and the driver truly set you guys apart from other reviewers. It’s what has kept me a fan for years. Please don’t lose sight of what sets you guys apart.
As a swedish man this was a joy to watch. This and 740 where the most popular first car for my generation and they where driven as hard as possible. Probably pulled 30 atleast out of snowbanks :D
wagons are still really popular here in sweden. both hatchbacks + wagons, and recently crossovers (which are just lifted hatchbacks).
Aren’t they still pretty well-liked throughout Europe altogether? I envy you, the brodozers and mobile living rooms here, and their respective drivers, are wholly insufferable.

Hit 117mph in my 275k mile 940turbo. Yeah the car may have been a little tired but the torque mixed with the cars eagerness to downshift with just a little more than normal throttle made it a great car to drive daily. It had the Dana locker rear end and could still kick the rear end out on dry pavement. Fun car.

Look at those big beautiful windows. I thinks that's one of the things I miss most about older cars. Cars today are all high belt lines, small windows, giant A pillars, and blind spots. (I know it's for crash and rollover protection but I still miss it)
Agreed. I once saw "best of Craigslist" post about an old Corolla or something, the posting said "doesn't have a backup camera but has a clear piece of glass at the back you can see out of." That was purely meant as a joke, but that's actually something to be valued in this day and age. I'd rather have a rear window I can actually see out of than a backup camera.
Truth. Also big pillars because of sloped roof, for better Aerodynamics. The A and C pillars of these old Volvos are astonishingly small.

My guy has not seen Swedens 240/740/940. These motors be pushing 4-600hp and since it's rwd it's the perfect car. Safe, easy to tune, massive power for low money, comfortable and lastly drifting
Grew up in a 940 turbo wagon and XC70. Grew up to buy a V70R and C30 T5. That 940 is the reason I got into and have stayed with Volvo my whole life thus far. So even though it wasn’t the best car ever, it did get me into my favourite car ever.

This is the essence of the starting a family in Europe. Especially here in the North, it's usually the humble, working class young couple with an old house in the countryside into which they've poured all their savings and need a wagon to support them and their dreams. And no other wagon does that, but Volvo's there, like a loving father or a grandfather, from whom the car actually came from.

90s Volvos are peak automobile. Been daily driving my ‘99 V70XC for the last 3 years after picking it up for $1200. Unfortunately it’s got some terminal issues so I’m buying a new Civic but I’ll miss my big blue brick.

Seeing the love for this car, and these 700/900-Series Volvos is part of why I’m currently resurrecting mine (1990 740 Turbo); my mom died suddenly almost 10 years ago and it’s been hell since then. Value to me is the idea I can live with a machine that’s effectively priceless-if I never sell it, it has no value to anyone but me.
Those Volvo wagons just look so nice. Bulletproof Swedish reliability and you could take your whole family on a road trip. I wish station wagons weren’t dying off.
Man, i miss Wagons so much. Stupid sedans can't haul anything, while bubbly crossover SUVs, well also can't haul much but are huge, and full size SUVs are so totally unnecessarily large for 99% of trips. Don't even get me started on trucks, a complete waste 99% of the time.
You can fit appliances in a wagon, and still get almost the same gas mileage as with a small sedan. Why'd they go away, again?

Damn. The last bit hit close to the heart. My grandmother turns 77 this year. She never owned a car, was a maid her entire life. By now, she can't go out by herself no more, can't recognize where she is. And her kids, my mom and uncle, are trying their best to tend to her needs as best as they can, alongside with their own work. I can't do much, for I have moved away for college.
I wonder if the sense of security an old Volvo brings would make things any easier.

I think I only ever knew one person (or rather a couple) that had one of these. It was my old next door neighbors. They were an older black couple (probably late 50s/early 60s at the time) living in a 1,500 sqft home build in the 60s. They kept to themselves, the husband mowed the lawn with an older riding lawn mower religiously ever 2 weeks, they had religious lawn ornaments, and they were the type to wave at you but almost never spoke to you. Their kids moved out a decade ago, and they were left basking in the life they had built for themselves. They were... Volvo 940 people.
It feels like its been so long since i heard Roman Sing in one of these. So refreshing.
I have that car, same colors and all. Yes, I bought it from a semi-retired college professor, yes, it’s not exiting. But I love the thing. To me, a guy who’s getting older and more practical, but still loves cars, it does a little of everything well. It’s comfortable, reliable, safe, quick when you want it to be, and handles the twisty mountain roads surprisingly well when you are in the mood for a little fun. I’ve had Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes’, Lexus over the years. All great cars in their way, but I love this thing and plan to keep it from now on, and it will continue to become more and more of an oddity, and I’m certain it will long outlast me. 😉
In Finland we teenagers like The Volvo 940 and we tuun them in to race Cars and use it faily😂

My Dad had a 1991 940 turbo sedan. I remember it being extremely comfortable and trouble free. I still see these things on the road today unlike the taurus wagon lol
That back seat reminds me of my parents’ 1989 mercury sable wagon. My cousin and I rode in the back…facing backwards for whole trip from Sheboygan to Fort Wayne. We only hand one portable GPX tape player and had to agree to switch who hit to use it every hour. Till the batteries died.
Finally a regular car I have personal history in! A 90’s 940 was my family’s car in the early 2000’s. Red paint, terrible condition. At least one vivid memory of sitting in the rear facing seat as a 5-6 year old. I liked watching traffic as you drove ahead.
My story with this car (more or less) is pretty spot on. My parents boutique a white 740 when I was born around 1991. When I was 16, it became my car, and I loved that thing. I ended up totaling it on a highway at age 17, finding a beat up one and fixing it with parts from my totaled 740, and after that one went down hill, I bought a 3rd one in much better shape. It was kicking until 2015, when a headgasket blew after moving across the country. I was careless for about 4 years after that, because nothing I found really grabbed me like the Volvo did.

As stock these things are slow but very practical load haulers - the load space is fairly epic for a car its size, a double mattress easily fits in the back with the seats down. Very popular in the UK with antiques dealers and builders. Where they really shine though is tunability (the turbo versions). Mine's got an MBC (~180hp), polybushed suspension, coilovers and an LSD, and it is truly hilarious - a proper sleeper, which I can still transport a load of stuff in. Tuning to 300whp is fairly easy, at which point it's got about the same power to weight ratio as a E36 M3. Worth it for the comedy value if nothing else - just don't expect good fuel economy at any level of tune!
