  • Is the Rovyvon Aurora A5 really that much better than all the other generic knock-off flashlights that look just like it? In this video we dig into the numbers and the build quality of this legendary EDC flashlight to find out why this everyday carry flashlight (torch) has built up such a fervent following in the EDC community. It's quite surprising to see what this thing can do.

    I've been carrying a RovyVon Aurora A8 for the past 6 months and it's quickly become my favorite light for EDC. Not as much juice as my Sofirin or LED Lenser lights, but the feature set and size can't be beat.

      @Leron... - Thanks for your post. I think the entire Aurora line is really impressive. I don't think you could go wrang with any of them as an EDC light.

    Thank you for a great comparison of these torches (flashlights).
    I picked up an S11-type torch about a year ago after seeing it on Jon Gadget's channel. This replaced a 4Sevens Preon Penlight that I've carried for years.
    I liked the S11's versatility but always thought it might fail under stress. Having tested the idea of a keychain rechargeable torch as my EDC, I've now invested in a RovyVon E5. I find it's size equally convenient, while enjoying the comfort of duel fuel and knowing I can slap in a AAA if needed.
    Thanks for your great contributions to the real-world EDC community!

      @PltOffPPrune - Thank you for your post and for being a subscriber. I've never had a problem with those S11 flashlights, but I think you are right about them possibly failing under stress. Based on what I've seen of their construction, the quality can vary dramatically. getting caught in good downpour with an S11 might cause it to fail if water seeps into the power switch or the charging port. But I have not experienced that. For me, they have just worked. I think the A5 might give me more options as a tool on my EDC organizer. It's smaller than the Manker light light I'm now carrying, but the Manker is twice as powerful and I can swap in an AA battery if the Lithium cell dies ( I very much like the dual fuel capability) . The smaller size of the A5 on my pocket rack EDC organizer would give me room for a full size SAK as well, which would be a tremendous upgrade. Figuring this kind of stuff out is half the fun of carrying it.....Thanks for sharing your ideas.

    I bought several of the centre S11 clone (plastic clip & large round base magnet) for US$3, I could not be happier 😁
    Really appreciate the detailed review & testing 👍

      @EarthlingEDC  Před 6 měsíci +2

      @edwardfletcher7790 - Well they do work. I was genuinely surprised at how cheaply constructed they are, and still they just keep on running. That larger magnet and the plastic clip are actually very nice to have on that model. Thanks again for all of your posts !!

      @Bruton-pe3pr - Thank you for your post. That's an interesting looking light (S12). I've seen it before on Ali. It looks like the next generation of the S11. It looks like its trying to compete more directly with the Aurora lights from Rovyvon. Might be something for me to test in the future. Thanks for sharing that.

    I carry an A8. It has an upgraded set of side lights. It’s absolutely amazing. Most recently, I got a flat tire on a highway. And I clipped the light on my reflector vest and set it to blinking red lights. I felt way safer and visible. I have a set of flashing magnetic disk lights that I deployed 20 feet behind my car - another must have.

    Hello from Ukraine. Just ordered an older gen A5 with Nichia and one of the S11s from Ali a gew days ago to see what are all about. Prior to this had a Boruit V3 - 2-LED light with a bigger battery. Not much use for it in a daily life due to UI, mistly used as a backup light during my trail runs after dark. Not a bad light, surprisingly, and, paired with one of those knock-off clips that people put on SAK keyrings, it carries great in the pocket. Neutral tint on mine, too, albeit cold. Just for a test, hiked for 2+ hours with it last week, it lasted that much with a usable light - that's all I may need in a light in this category.
    Rovyvon appeals to me with multi-mount options with magnets and High-CRI emitters. We'll see once it gets here

      @sandergtube - Thanks for posting and for being a subscriber. It's really impressive how much light these smaller flashlights are throwing out now. When I was a kid in the 70's I was fascinated by a small incandescent bulb used by train hobbyists called a GOW bulb or (Grain of Wheat). It was actually about the size of a grain of wheat and could be run by one AAA battery. It had a yellowish light that was maybe 1/2 lumen. You can now buy an LED bulb about the same size as that old GOW and get 10's of Lumens with the same AAA battery and it probably lasts longer as well. Wondering what the next generation of bulbs is going to be... :-)

      @@EarthlingEDC I use different flashlights for different applications. In this instance, my picks for an EDC keychain/pocket light is the Olight diffuse or the i5R EOS. The Diffuse is 700 lumens, 5 brightness levels, strobe mode, USB C rechargeable li ion battery included or you can use any AA battery, power indicator, and OPX8. The i5R is 350 lumens, USB C rechargeable or AA, nice pocket clip, and IPX8. They are larger than the A5 and do not have a UV mode. Prices are similar. The Arkfeld Pro and Baton 3/4 are contenders as well but are larger and more expensive.

    I wear the rovyvon around my neck. You would not believe how many times I click it on during the day when it hangs there.. so many times. Way more than if I have it in my pocket.

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 6 měsíci +2

      @kcherrick2627 - Thanks for your post - Keeping EDC gear easily accessible increases how frequently you end up using it. Having something that you need in an EDC pouch in your car is not going to get used as much as having the same tool in your pocket. Your Rovyvon example illustrates that perfectly. thanks for sharing that.

    Good one. Just commenting to support the effort. It seems like there are a ton of $15 and under flashlights these days. I picked up one of those small rectangular ones with two "headlights" and sidelights. It's surprisingly good for what it is. Reliability is obviously the unknown. It's the old story of selling things cheap enough that people don't sweat it too much if they break after a year or so. I don't rely on them for emergencies, full stop. I group them in the useful toy category. ;)
    The more controversial topic is more expensive stuff that fails or doesn't work the way it should, which people also seem to accept to an alarming degree - but that's consumer capitalism in the 21st century... Well, I'll stop before the rant starts. ;)
    - Cheers

      @dylanemeraldgrey - Thanks for supporting the effort. :-) I'm not dissatisfied with what those S11 flashlight offer for the $4.50 price. I have not had one fail and the feedback following the video from people that use them has been pretty positive. As you mentioned, I think thee are quite a few interesting lights in that lower price range. I'm still liking the A5 more...that 650 Lumen output from a mini 2.38" flashlight is really nice to have as a keychain light. In regard expensive EDC stuff that fails, I'm seeing more and more unbranded gear that was previously dirt cheap, now being sold as "EDC" gear at a higher price. Not sure if that is what you are seeing. Those 3 letters are showing up as part of the branding on more and more stuff... Thanks for your post.

    I carried an A8 and after about three months every time I would go to use it the battery would be dead. Even when locked out (so not accidentally turning on) it would just be dead. I e-mailed their "customer service" and got zero response. My olight flashlight(s) have never let me down, even after much heavier use (not to mention better durability thanks to metal body construction and not polycarb). Rovyvon will never get another cent of my money.
