Latest Mini Pouch & Pocket Rack™ Loadout: What would you add to it?

  • Going into 2024, the selection of tools for this EDC pouch loadout is based on having a compact mini set of good quality functional tools and accessories that I can carry on my person in a pouch that is 4.25" by 3.25" by 1.75". I selected these tools to help me fix things around the house and when traveling for work. I also want them to help me resolve any "in need of repair" issues that I may run into in an urban environment as well as helping to fix similar repair issues for my family and friends and maybe someone I just met in a parking lot who has a bad battery cable and needs some assistance to get home. This loadout is what I came up with and I'm looking for suggestions to improve it that take into account the limited space of the pouch and the very broad goals that I've outlined above. #edc #everydaycarry #edcdump #edcgear

    I'm looking for some ideas that will improve the ability of the kit featured in this video to do more and do those things better. If you have a suggestion, keep in mind the purpose of this kit is to fix things and assist family, friends and anyone else that might need a hand, with issues they may be having as well. This might be something as simple as a band aid for a scrape on your nephew's knee or fixing a wall outlet in your mother in-law's house. It's not designed to be a survival kit. Thinks of it as an urban fix-it kit or what happens to an Altoids tin when it grows up. Whatever you suggest it needs to either fit into the pouch with the existing tools ore replace one of them. I'm looking forward to hearing what you come up with.

      Since you use one long elastic cord for holding stuff it seems to be better not to print on a 3D printer, but to take for example a carbon plate and simply drill holes along the edges
      Аs a result you can use titanium, carbon, aluminum or even more posh or chip materials with minimal processing, just cut to size, drill holes and chamfer

    • @fastandcurious
      @fastandcurious Před 5 měsíci +1

      I am currently trying to slightly enlarge the holes and space them in such a way that the track can easily fit into mini sized 5 ring or 6 ring ringbinders. Those who like pocket sized Filofaxes and other brand ringbinders might be interested. Or those who like myself want to combine such an EDC setup with paper based planning and journaling.

      @dimmodddimmodd7199 - Thanks for posting. Each tool on a rack is usually secured by 1 elastic band for that tool. In some cases it may be advantageous to have a couple items being held by one band, but 90% of the time there is one band holding one tool. Each band is anchored to a cleat. The cleats are specifically designed to work with 2mm elastic bands. These can either be 2mm silicone O-Rings or more recently I've been making my own bands from nylon or polyester coated 2mm elastic shock cord. The bands actually click into place when inserted into a cleat. They are designed to hold a band in place even when there is no tension on the band. It would be very difficult to emulate this type of precision when making them by hand.
      What you describe is exactly how I started making these back in February. I was hand cutting Kydex & ABS and I had made a cutting template out of aluminum to increase the accuracy of my work. They worked great, but the 3D printing took it to another level and allows us to protoype new ideas in hours rather than days. If you check out the community page for Earthling EDC www.youtube.com/@EarthlingEDC/community there are several metal examples of pocket racks posted as well as a beautiful walnut version. Some of the new designs we are seeing are really quite impressive. Thank you for taking the time to give feedback on this project. It is sincerely appreciated.

    I do not know who makes the 1/4’ extension. However I do know and have done this without any damage to the extension bit. Simply find a center punch and lock the extension in a vice and start tapping until you see the shaft move. Find your desired length and is there is any play afterwards you can epoxy it in place. I have to be honest, I was not really impressed with this, UNTIL I watched the video, and now, I have to be honest again, I was dead WRONG. This is a GREAT idea and something I'm going to play with soon. I am wondering though about trying to fit an industrial sewing bobbin on here. The bobbin is 37mm in diameter and just over 11mm thick. I use it to hold about 45 to 50 feet of 250 pound test braided fishing line. I like to always have some kind of cordage on me, just like I always have a knife. I mean there's no real substitute for either one when you need it. Thanks for the idea, and links. Keep up the great work.

    Something I was thinking through for myself was modifying the mini rack you made to have the battery pack sit inside it, basically 3D print a "ring" with the teeth on it, that the battery pack would sit inside of. This would reduce weight as well as size as the rack has a sort of "wasted space" with the flat plastic. Again, this is more of a thought as I haven't had the time to mess with any of it. LOVE your videos and the mini rack! I carry a pouch, but its super fat and sticks out, so Im enjoying your ideas!

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @AD-dc6qd That's an interesting ideas. My experience with removing material from the center of a 3D printed Rack has shown that it can be done, but you need to be very carefully not to remove too much because it will impact the ability of the card to remain rigid while under the tension of the multiple elastic bands. This might be countered however by making the remaining card thicker or out of metal. One other aspect to consider is that the charging port for the TNTOR is on the edge of the battery, so you would need to remove it each time it needed to be recharged. This might also be an issue for the cable that is built into the battery. I still think it's an interesting idea though.. Thanks for posting

    One thing you might consider is the swiss card sissors replacements. They make a great light sissor. They work well because they fit in tiny spaces and you don't have to carry an entire SAK if you do not want to.

Another idea is to increase the size of the SAK that I'm using which I think will also increase the size of the scissors. I was thinking of the SAK "Midnite Manager" (the model without the lite)

    Great kit and video -- your content is delightful.
    For additions, I would probably put some zipties or microcord in heat shrink tubing. I'd also find a way to sneak a ruler in (e.g. print on the rack).
    For my own needs I'd probably do a different tradeoff between the SAK and flashlight . I'd go for a smaller flashlight, like the Rovyvon Auroras, and go for a larger SAK like the Compact. That gets me a larger blade, better scissors, a pin for splinters (put an alcohol wipe in boo boo kit), and thicker pry tool.
    If I stuck with a AA-size, I'd probably go with a right angle (eg Acebeam H16) as I find that's better for fixing tasks.
    What's great about your system is that it's easy for each person to make their own tradeoffs.

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 4 měsíci +2

      @KenConley - Thanks for these idea. I like the ruler on the Rack idea a lot. I think we'll test that one out. Also the shrink tubing, cord as well as other sundry items definitely need some space in the pouch.
      Regarding the larger SAK, I was thinking of the "midnite manager" as a possibility. It's just a bit larger than what I currently have. I just switched from from an aurora style (no brand) to a 1300 Lumen Manker light that is considerably larger but still fits vertically on the back of the Rack between the Knipex XS and the ratchet. I'm going to keep that set-up for a bit and see what happens, but may switch back in the future. We'll see...
      For the Pry tool, I've been resisting the necessity for a pry bar, but I'm about to do a review of the Lever Gear Edge XT. We've had a couple requests from viewers and I'm excited to get into into the details of this tool with the two models they sent me.
      As you mentioned, the flexibility of the Pocket Rack definitely makes it much easier to customize your EDC tools to fit your specific need. I enjoy exercising my brain as I consider the benefits and drawbacks of each item I keep on my Rack.
      Thank you again for taking the time to share your ideas with me. Happy Holidays

    Hi, I have only just found your channel and this film on the pouch plus pocket rack is the first one I have viewed. Great! Although I have camped outdoors and been asked to start fires (barbeques and home fireplaces, I hasten to add!) I live in the city and my edc, such as it is, consists of things I might need on a daily basis rather than stuff to help me survive the apocalypse. I am aware that 100 year events are taking place more frequently, nevertheless, I am usually faced with "how do I fix this?" of "I wish I had thought to bring one of . . ." So, your approach of being ready to fix things really fits.
    To add to the pouch?
    I usually carry some cordage with me - I have worn paracord bracelets, for example, but paracord is too expensive and quite bulky for some quick fixes and even the "quick deploy" knots take a bit of time to deploy. So, I have just bought some micro cord and nano cord - both come in decent lengths [Micro= 37.9 m/125 ft and Nano = 100 m/300 ft] on spools and will fit into a large pocket. I am currently looking for some smaller spools, something to fit into a corner of the pouch, or perhaps something that could be wrapped around some card or even a couple of cleats on the pocket rack; so that I could carry a couple 10-20 ft lengths. For really basic jobs, twine might do, but it is probably too bulky for the task, even though it is very light. Continuing the thread theme - Felix Immler suggests putting a needle and thread into the Toothpick slot on a Swiss Army Knife. He shows a mod where he shortens the toothpick to use as a cap to hold the needle in place - not sure if the needle can get lost in the knife handle. Obviously, you could find other locations to carry a needle and thread.
    On another point, some of the items on the pdf list do not seem to be available, esp. the mini pouch. As the pdf doesn't list the size, I am not sure about a suitable replacement. Could you reply with some specs, please?

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 4 měsíci +2

      @charleshayes2528 - Thanks for your post - Thanks for the idea regarding the cordage. It's something I want to add for sure. I've also got a needle in the match safe and have room for some thread in there as well. Thanks for that idea.
      The items on the PDF go in and out of stock quite a bit. The dimensions for the standard size pocket rack are 112mm X 72mm X 2mm. Keep in mind that your rack's width when both sides are loaded, could be around 36mm . So when looking for a pouch, keep that in mind. I still see plenty of 10 round shotgun shell pouches on TEMU as well as AliExpress and they do appear on Amazon as well, but cost more than twice as much there. The dimensions for the mini rack are 104mm X 62mm X 2mm as with the regular rack, the width when both sides are loaded will around 36mm depending on what you are adding. In both cases I rounded up the dimensions by a few mm to give some extra breathing room. Thank you again for your post. I look forward to seeing what your build looks like. Send me photos at Earthling@newsphoto.com

    I appreciate all the care you took to come up with this system, but for me it is way too much based upon my 70 years of experience. In real life I have rarely needed more EDC tools than what I carry on my keychain: Leatherman Squirt and Photon light connected with my keys on an Olight mini-carabiner. I also carry a Kershaw Leek pocket knife for easy one-handed access to a sharp blade. If I am on an outing or anticipate greater potential needs I carry a more thorough kit in my Fjallraven messenger bag, but honestly I have rarely, if ever, needed more than what I carry in my front pocket. I have full tool and first aid kits in my vehicle which is always near since I don´t live in Manhattan.

      @EarthlingEDC  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @stantheman5163 - Thank you for sharing your experience with your EDC tools. First off, you've got 7 years of seniority on me and I'd love to hear what you have on your keychain. My approach to EDC might be a bit different from yours and my tool set reflect that. I like to actively take stuff apart and see how it works. My wife finds it annoying, but I'm the first line of defense in our family when it comes to broken things getting fixed
      The dishwasher started leaking Christmas day and my kit allowed me to disconnect it and pull it from under the counter and then replace the two broken part and reinstall everything. I had a similar incident with our dryer earlier in the year and the upstairs shower needed a new valve, then replacing the hardwired fire alarms at my mother in-law's house, repairing a sick drill....etc. I also assist in setting up several trade shows for work several times a year requiring some gaffer skills that are addressed by my kit, plus a few more items. The compact design and quality of the tools gives me the opportunity to not have to gather my full size tools from the various boxes and chests in my basement. I just get started with my kit and if I run into an issue that I don't have a tool for, I then go and get it. Most of the time the kit gets it done.
      The kit featured in the video is designed around how I need it to work for me. Everyone has different needs for what they need from their EDC and I hope that these videos give them an opportunity to see some things in my kit that might help them with theirs. Thank you again for your post.

      I understand where you´re coming from. I have multiple kits which reside in each vehicle I own, each of my two covered garages and in my main workshop and garden workshop. I am a fiddler of the first order. I just don´t need to carry it all on my person, and experience has shown that in my existence it´s easier to just pick up my carry bag if I know I will need it. My keychain has just what I mentioned: the Squirt and the Photon. I use them both all the time and that is all I need to do any minor repair on the run. The Otool 2 Mini carabiner has a built-in prybar, phillips driver, bottle opener, and 3 sizes of closed end wrenches in a tiny 2¨ titanium alloy package.

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @stantheman5163 - Thanks for the follow-up. I agree with you. I don't want to carry a big bag full of EDC tools on me wherever I go. If I'm going to be out and about and want a smaller carry with me, I'll use the micro pouch that I featured in the video. It's about the size of a fat wallet and I can carry it in a coat pocket or as a small belt pouch. I find that if I can keep just the essentials on me (Bit driver, SAK, pliers, mini flashlight) I can address most issues that pop-up around me. That micro EDC pouch is not cumbersome to carry and in most cases I don't have to go get additional tools. It's a trade off between carrying a very small set of tools that are very capable or keeping a larger set somewhere nearby that I can access. My personal preference is to be able to fix stuff on the spot if possible, but I will go grab additional tools if the job calls for it. Everyone has there own preference for how they manage their EDC and I respect that. I find it really interesting to hear what people are using and how they are using it. It gives me a better insight into what I should be putting into my videos. Thanks again for posting

    Great kit and great ideas. If I was to offer some feedback here's what I would say. With the Clutch (and I recently bought it too) it's slow to charge, very very slow at charging. So if the main reason for using it is its flat formfactor then obviously stick with it. But there are much faster battery banks. For the SAK, you could replace it with the Victorinox Rambler with similar weight but a few more very useful tools. For the lighter, I do not recommend getting those peanut sized lighters. They're actually dangerous imo. You drop that thing anywhere (and it's easy to do so) and it's a fire. I would instead get a mini Bic light. Bics are solid and always work. Especially when you would be using something like that in an emergency you don't want to be fiddling with a peanut sized lighter. I bought it too and it sounded cool in theory but after testing it, I genuinely think it's dangerous. For the extendible pen, if you want a better formfactor check out the Fisher space pen but if you want something smaller (no space) check out the OHTO pen and remove the cartridge. It actually writes well but takes up no space. For the card, this is untested and purely theory but consider using hairbands ie something like those from Goody hairbands. They might be more elastic and easier to work on the card.

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 5 měsíci +1

      @Dracomies - Some really great ideas here. I'm adding my thoughts to address each of them..
      1. I have not seen an issue with slow charging for the card sized TNTOR battery bank. One of the things I like about it is the construction. There are thin metal plates on each side of the lithium battery. It feels solid and I'm sure they offer some heat dissipation advantages when charging as well. The thin form factor and the size compatibility with the Pocket Rack are indeed big reasons for me using this battery as well.
      2. I like the idea of trying out a Rambler.
      3. I've been mulling over what to do about a simple flame source for quite a while. I don't need it that frequently, so that's why the small form factor of the aluminum pill canister with the waterproof matches is my current choice. I understand the disadvantages of the wet fuel peanut lighter, but for some folks it may fit their needs. The small form factor is what attracted me to it originally. The BIC lighter is definitely the way to go, but it uses up more space on the Rack and I think for now, I'm better served by having just a few waterproof matches. This will be an ongoing assessment of my needs vs space an the Rack :-)
      4. The pen solution I have was based on me finding that pen and being entranced by the small size. I got it and found that it writes really well. I like your ideas and may try those out as well.
      5. Lately the the elastic bands are probably where I spend the most time researching. I'm currently using 2mm elastic shock cord with a nylon sleave that covers the outside. These cords can also be purchased with a polyester sleeve. I cut them to the sizes that I needs and then secure the end with a bead or a pull tab & ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (superglue). Essentially I'm making a custom hair band for each item on the Rack. I did find some manufacturers who can make these for me and we'll probably go with one of them when we start producing Pocket Racks for sale.
      Thank you again for these suggestions. I sincerely appreciate you sharing them.

    Hello! It’s great to see that I am also following the same ideas that you have. Does your card battery bank heat up quite considerably when charging? I wonder if that stick-on pouch at the back of the battery would make it even worse for me.

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 5 měsíci

      @guessmr.3137 - Good question. I have 5 different battery banks made by different manufacturers and they will all get somewhat warm during charging. I can only address my experience with the TNTOR battery. The Tntor card is constructed with 2 very thin exterior metal plates on each side. These contribute to heat dissipation while charging as well as the strength of the card. I have not noticed an unusually high amount of heat coming off the card during charging, but it does get warm. The chare rate s also going to impact the heat issue you are describing. The pouch is extremely thin but strong Lycra. It may have some impact on retaining heat generated during charging, I would doubt it would have a significant impact on cooling the bank though. If you are concerned about it, remove the items in the pouch during charging to allow more airflow.

    I think the hex extension (bit hold) that can fit in Wiha double end bits is the WARRIOR 2-7/8 in. Magnetic Bit Holder from Harbor Freight. I have one, but no Wiha bits to test the fit. It is aluminum. The bit hold hole is 12.5 mm deep, 2.3 mm deeper than my other ones, just about what you need for the 30 mm Wiha bits. So, if yours is as deep, then it is the HF one. In this video I had everything and wanted to show how it could work in conjunction with the Small battery bank. The card light is extremely small and gets brighter than my phone light plus it's dimmable. I see it as more of a work light that can cover a pretty large are if necessary. The flashlight is 1300 lm and can light up distant objects, but if you shine it upward at a white ceiling, it's quite surprising how well it can light a small room. I'll probably drop the card light in the future, since the flashlight is so versatile, but I can see that some folks might want to have an extremely small light source in their kit.

    I don't know who makes the bit extender, but I think you could make one by just hammering the inner part out a bit in a vice, they are usually just press fitted. It would make the contact area a bit smaller and the extender a bit longer, but this isn't that high torque of an application after all.

      @gabon4000 - Thank you for your suggestion. I've tried that on several different types of bit extenders and ended up crushing the magnet on the inside which reduced the ability of the magnet to hold the bits in place. I'll try this on some other extenders as well and see what happens...Thanks for your post.

    A few ideas that might've been mentioned here already:
    - a 7mm glue stick
    - a 1g tube of cyanoacrylate glue
    - a few strips of self-adhesive rubber tape. They stretch a lot and can fix a leaky pipe in a pinch
    - a few loops of gorilla tape around the bandaid pouch
    - a few zip ties
    - not "fix it" per se, but you could perhaps add a small magnet somewhere
    And a survival tip that will only require a little bit of elbow grease. You could polish the bottom of the hex bit tin to be more reflective. It's difficult for me to imagine a scenario when you need to rely on light signals, as I'm not sure you will be able to polish it to a mirror finish, but hey - it adds no bulk or weight.

      @JK-pg2qn - Thank you for your post. I'm publishing a new video next week (hopefully) that will include many of the suggestions that you mentioned. This particular video will feature a "Budget" minded EDC kit designed for urban use. The idea is to build out a kit that can fulfill many of the functions that were discussed in this video, but at a lower build cost. This was a joint effort with TEMU.com backing the project. It took about a month to get everything together and I'm feeling pretty excited about what I came up with. I'm looking forward to sharing it with our viewers. I like the bit selection too! It has the standard philips and flats, T6 and T8 for knives and the hexes for Ikea things. The extender works 'pretty good' but not perfectly for all double-sided Wiha bits. It also works on Leatherman bits, except for 3 bits but works on everythigng else: Hex ( 7/32 and 3/16) bit doesn't work,
      Hex 1/4 and 7/32 doesn't work,

    • @EarthlingEDC
      @EarthlingEDC  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @Synic08 - Thank you for posting. I sincerely appreciate your feedback and take your observation of my kit being "used" as a huge compliment. My reason for having the kit is to use it. I think anyone who creates EDC videos ends up using their gear quite a bit, but I also make a point of using it for things that are unrelated to the videos and try to keep adjusting and assessing what I carry based on those experiences. I had mentioned in an earlier post that our dishwasher had started leaking Christmas day. Using the kit I disconnected it and pulled it out from under the kitchen counter. As part of the repair, I had to strip out the tubes for the water jets so that I could access a leaking gromet. The various water jet tubes on a Kenmore are held in place with clips that need to be pried off and for the life of me, I could not get them to come off with my fingers alone . A couple days earlier I had added a small Lever Gear prybar to my kit to test it out. I've always been skeptical about prybars, but damned if this thing did not get those clips off in just a few seconds. I'll keep testing it and eventually will do a video review, but for me, a tool on my rack / kit needs to prove to me that I should carry it. So far, the prybar is still in the running. Glad you stopped by to check us out and thanks again for the feedback.

      @EarthlingEDC  Před 5 měsíci +2

      @norgtube You are right, I should be. Plus it's cleaner when it comes to shock cord and paracord. I think the big reason I have not is the difference in the diameter of the BIC light vs the peanut lighter or the pill case with the waterproof matches. I go back and forth between those two because of their compact size. If I find that I'm using them mor frequently, I might go to the BIC, but lately, that need has not been there, so one of those two smaller options is where I've landed for now.. Thanks for your post. I think it's so interesting in the west, what men will do, to overcome the self-imposed stigma of carrying a purse. In Asia, all men carry a purse. They call it a cross body bag, or a sling bag, but it's basically the same thing. A bag on a strap, that you sling over your shoulder. It solves all the issues men in the west have with how to carry gear.

    • @EarthlingEDC

      @TheRealMafoo - Thanks for the Post. I'm in New York and men carrying sling bags is the norm here. Do a search for EDC sling bags on you tube and there are hundreds to choose from being touted by western men. I've got a friend in Hawaii that wants to start designing them. I think that the stigma of men in the west carrying one is really not that big of a factor anymore. Regarding the pouch featured in the video, it can be converted into a sling bag by just adding a nylon strap to the belt loop. Thanks for brining this up. It's an interesting topic.

The matches in the safe are not loose and can not come into contact with the striker surface. But that is an excellent warning and I should have mentioned that when I was showing the match safe in the video. An extra step would be to wrap the striker surface in foil as well, which I'll do as soon as I post this. Thank you again for mentioning this...

      @Steinway7373 - I once heard of some red matches (not safety matches) exploding in someone's rear trouser pocket, when they were struck by a shoe when the person was being punished in school. This was many years ago, when corporal punishment was still allowed in schools. In another incident, my own cousin was carrying a roll of percussion caps in his pocket - the kind that used to be loaded into a toy pistol to make a noise - and they exploded and caused a burn. A full roll was 100 caps. My grandmother would not let us play with caps after that. When I carry safety matches in a tube, the matches are inside the sealed container and the paper strip is on the outside, so that they cannot come into contact accidentally. I keep the tube inside a larger container, so the risk of the paper getting wet is about the same as using the matches and the loose strip. There are techniques for protecting the heads of "strike anywhere" matches, which eliminates the need for the paper strip.

However, It would be pretty easy to upscale them with a larger and thicker ABS or Kydex board and bungie cord sized elastics. Id also think that a handle cut into the board would make it easy to carry items and offload them from a truck. You could also build them to fit into tool chest drawers, so you could extract an entire selection of tools from a drawer at one time if needed. I know there are some folks in the trades that are using them for their EDC carry, but I don't know if they use them on their job...Thanks for posting this. They actually supply 3D printed products to hospitals that are frequently used by patients at those hospitals. We also have hundreds of viewers who have downloaded the free STL file and printed it themselves. You can see many examples of these custom made 3d cards here: www.youtube.com/@EarthlingEDC/community I've heard no issues related to degradation or failure of one of these Pocket Racks.
      I've probably used these longer than anyone and have never seen a failure or any degradation to one of my cards and I carry and use these all the time. Keep in mind that they have no moving parts. It's simply a 2mm thick plastic card. Possible degradation or failure of a 3D print is also going to depend on the quality and type of filament being used for that print as well as other factors such as humidity and the configuration of the printer that makes them.
      Have you printed one out and had it fail or degrade? Please let me know (Earthing@Newsphoto.com) and send me photos an details of what you experienced with a card if that is the case. Thank you for your post.
