There Will Never Be Another Zdeno Chara

  • In this video I talk about the legendary career of Zdeno Chara. Chara's road to the NHL wasn't easy as he had to work extremely hard just to get a shot at being drafted. The New York Islanders took a chance on Big Z and then Chara's career was taken to the next level after he was traded to the Ottawa Senators. He's most known for his time as a Boston Bruin however; where he was a captain for 14 years! He's the tallest player in NHL history, could rip pucks well over 100 miles per hour, and even fight anyone who stood in his way! Zdeno Chara was one of a kind and is likely headed to the Hockey Hall of Fame very soon!

I remember in the 90's seeing him in a photo against Ziggy Pallfy and thinking "Wow that guy is huge" he was clumsy, useless and garbage in the beginning but Chara grew and grew himself into a better hockey player and became a legend! He worked hard and proved he was not just a big goon in the NHL that he could become an amazing Defender. Always loved his career!

He's a great example to big players in all sports that you're not doomed to be slow and clumsy just because youre tall, you just need to work harder on your mobility and handles. He's still in amazing shape and probably would do well in a European league.

Would you guys rather have prime Raymond Bourque or prime Chara on the 2011 Bruins cup team? For me it’s Ray because I’m biased. I’m a child of the 80s and 90s Bourque was my dude. Bourque won the Norris 5xs , Chara once. I love them both but of my lifetime Bourque is the best Bruins defender. Obviously nobody can touch Orr. By the way all three of the defenders I mentioned are on the Bruins all century team so you can’t go wrong either way. Unless you don’t think Orr was the best defender of all time.

The NHL has kept track of Ice Time since 1997-98, and from '97-'98 to today Chara is still the leader in total Ice Time with 39,485 minutes, the leader in Shifts with 45,702 (the second player on the most Shifts list is Joe Thornton with about six thousand less shifts at 39,944.
Chara is also the leader in most Shifts in the playoffs (also since '97-'98 when the NHL started counting them, with 6,235.

Back at NHL 07 game dynasty mode where you could draft your own roster while cap limit and positions were important I always drafted Zdeno as first pick. Made him in 5v5, powerplay and shorthanded lineups so, that he'd be able to make a shot straight from face off won. As far as I remember best season for him, me controlling the play not simulation, was when Zdeno scored 98 goals and "just 40" assists
