Another excellent review/tutorial. Thank you !
I find the really unique feature of this device the “global” tracks with 3 takes each. Apart from the Roland Verselab, I don’t know of any other box that gives you this kind of support for song level audio tracks. This makes it a real songwriter’s tool, where you can add vocals and say guitar over a drum/base/pad groove.
The lack of swing and unquantised recording is a bummer, and I would have liked to see multi sample instruments.
Finally the single insert effect and single send effect are disappointing.
Given what it already does, I suspect the processing power is there to do all the above, and it’s only a matter of coding. Having coded myself, I obviously don’t underestimate the work involved…

I do have a little trouble seeing it on a desktop, but the only reason i notice is i happen to look at the screen before finger drumming. Dont get me wrong, a bigger clscreen wouldve been nice, its just not as bad as ppl have been making it out to be. At least not for my old eyes.

If you come from a device with a mobile phone or ipad sized display than this is clearly a bit crusher to the eyesight. BUT, if you're coming from pocket devices the likes of pocket operator or kaossilator mini, or you sit with your nose right in your monologue or microfreak keyboard, then this looks to be a great hand held or close contact machine with plenty of options. Apart from firmware shortcomings as mentioned above (most, if not all, should be addressable via updates IMO), my gripes are SIX AA battery operation (how many of you own a six battery charger??), and no SDXC card support (it's 2022 - some stores don't even sell SDHC's anymore...). However those are not deal breakers. The deal breaker is a lack of availability until some time next year 😄

The new sampler just released by Sonicware also looks promising but the favorite box for me remains Novation Circuit Tracks, which has huge limitations. I want something much less deep than Maschine or MPC, that samples, that has two octaves of keyboard pads, and that's also a rompler with all the bread and butter sounds you could ever want, all the sap. And not as tiny or expensive as OP-1. Price point 500 to 700 dollars. And the verselab won't do because of its interface and price

This feels like a digitakt expansion. It's everything I'm missing in that machine with an eeriely similar vibe and a different enough opinion on workflow. Would be perfect if they nail crossfading. Anyone try using this together with an elektron box?

Lots of nice features, but these eyes could not handle the tiny screen.
Wonder if you could put a Fresnel lens on it to magnify the screen.
I do like the form factor, built in mic, speaker, and external inputs.
For now, I will stick to my MC-101, TR-06S, J-6, T-8, Volcas, and Model:Cycles, for portable jam boxs.
Also, word to the wise...Don't buy until after they get all the bugs worked out, and features added that you want.

Too bad they did not get to include a larger screen. Apart from that this looks like everything the digitakt has missing to be the greatest groovebox.
Let’s see how it develops with firmware updates.

2 questions you might know the answer to. 1.Can you export patterns as midi files to import into a DAW? 2. Can the midi note be changed or assigned to any value?

only thing stopping me from hardware are those tiny screens..but if thats fixed, they seem very plausible...a design issue only.

I am considering one of these for my son who needs a device focused on music production (not a computer). It sure ticks a LOT of boxes, but I sure wish these compact devices had the ability to record live midi with a decent ppqn. It seems so bizarre to me that modern sequencers are not made with a simple ability that we had 35 years ago. I’m trying to encourage him to not only “make beats” but also play expressively. Is there anything that has these kinda features but will also record live high ppqn midi tracks?

Been playing around w this thing and i will say the biggest con 4 me so far (other than the actual sd card system set up) is only having 1 insert effect. Not per track, just one period. Thats a rough limitation.

If you have 3 instrument tracks playing, is the 8 note polyphony spread through those three tracks or is it 8 notes per instrument track?

I want record a shot sample from my computer using that usb cable. I try to set it up and it wont recognize the usb source. I believe they sent my a bad one. Do I have to install the batteries and also have to plug in the ac adaptor as well?

Hi there I have just recently got my samptrek and no, no good. doesn't record and won't load what I've recorded. I tried recording my voice taking using the built in mic located at the far top right corner of the sampltrek. but yes there is signal going thru the built in mic and I adjusted the mics volume and I press record and I tal into it then I stop the recording and nothing is loaded in. must be something i'm doing wrong.

Small screens can actually work if their information they are displaying is designed for a small screen. The Minifreak and Microfreak screens e.g. work quite well for me. But this here is not even just small, it is overloaded with information. For my old eyes this is a design fault and a dealbreaker although I like the principal concept.

    • @loopop
      @loopop  Před rokem +1

yes, I mention it's small in relation to what they put on it. indeed if there were only one or two parameters, I'd say it generously huge
