Given the growth of MTB over the past year and Covid, I had a tough time finding a bike in my area. Everywhere was sold out- some stores were on backorder for months. I also went into it not knowing how expensive bikes are. After weeks of searching 2nd hand bikes, I bit the bullet and elected to get a new 2020 Giant Fathom2 from a shop in Wisconsin. They shipped it down to me for a fee. It was a lot more than I wanted to spend for my first bike, but I've heard it's an excellent first bike from my research.

  • @StevenDoesStuff
    @StevenDoesStuff Před 4 lety +1

I bought the Giant Talon 3 (29) because the TREK marlin 5 was out of stock, here's my honest review as a beginner who had a lot of questions (you probably are too):
-The bike looks beautiful, aesthetic wise, bike was larger than in the pictures when I got one that fit me.
-The bike rides beautifully, front shifters can be smoother but rear shifters are very nice.
-I ride it for long hours on mountains, grass, gravel etc for my CZcams bike blogs, it does fine.
-I brought the bike on a MTB trail and abused the hell out of it, I crashed and crashed as I practiced my MTB skills.
After all the abuse, here's two apparent things:
    1) The chain drops when I crashed two times, so it's not that big of a deal because it only dropped when I was stopped and my crash shaked the whole chain around.
    2) The pedal is made of plastic and doesn't have the metallic nubs that more expensive bikes have, so every time I leaned too low and hit the floor with my pedals, it kind of shaves off the grips.
What can be done to improve it?
    1) Get metallic pedals
    2) Install a dropper post if you intend to do some serious mountain biking.
    3) Maybe convert to a 1x
Overall satisfaction: Very satisfied. I bought the bike for $560 and it's worth every penny, considering the abuse I made it go through, it only had those two minor issues.
A lot of beginners tend to give up the sport after their first time out on a trail and crashing left and right, so I would recommend getting an affordable hard-tail and outgrowing it with practice before moving onto $1000+ bikes.
I have a few first person videos of me riding the bike on my channel, including my first ever MTB trail ride where I crash every five minutes.

After being low on funds, I picked up a 2nd hand Voodoo Bizango 29er last year. Put a slackerizer headset on, knocking the head angle from 67 to 65 degrees (best upgrade by far) dropper post, larger discs and a tubeless conversion kit. Been super impressed with the bike. It's damn fast for a hardtail, both up and down, and I actually enjoy riding it more than some 'big name' branded bikes I've had in the past, all for less than £500. Never thought I'd say that about a Halfords bike.

I got a similar bike to start MTBing, all components upgradable. I did start with grips, saddle and pedals. I have the exact same fork, but it has a wooden feel. I found servicing it with fork specific grease made it feel 1,000 times better. Other components I replaced were tyres, crankset (ended up rounding off the tapers of the OEM cranks), handlebar/stem and a dropper post. After the dropper, best upgrade was the crankset/pedal combo, I have loads of confidence on assents and descents because of them.

Bought a Gt Avalanche 3 for 30 quid. Seller described what was good, bad etc even down to the forks being locked up. Collected from his house. Only bought it as haven't ridden a mtb since having to sell mine after suffering spine damage in an accident at work years ago. Currently in bits awaiting parts to rebuild it. Keeping it old school with v brakes etc as can't see my climbing any mountains on it. Basically bit of extra exercise.

I ride at silver and whistler.... my hard tail is only for rainy days and that’s it.... all my other bikes are all collectors bikes... including my coveted and most riden 2010 transition bottlerocket! I got newer bikes but damnnnn if you got $1200+ hunt one of those down!

Nice bike rides well but poor quality bearings
Have replaced every bearing on the bike after 2 years

I brought a GT avalanche 27.5 inch 2017 from gumtree for £180 just before lockdown. I rang my local police station and they ran a check on the serial number. Wasn't stolen. So I registered it for free with bikeregister. Kenda tyres and continental tubes, a good clean and some new hydraulic fluid for the brakes and its served me brilliantly

I have a similar bargain bike. Would love it if you showed how to upgrade the bottom bracket without having to change any of the running gear and the pros and cons of slacking the head angle with angled headset bearings if it's even possible with voodoo bikes. A recommendation and the fitting of an appropriatly priced dropper post and how easy it would be to convert to tubeless with the stock rims and tyres would also be greatly appreciated. Great video. I'm sure a series of upgrade follow up videos on this bike would be really popular with many who have tight budgets but are keen bikers and tinkerers.

My girlfriend bought me an originally 600€ 2016 CUBE 27.5" XC Hardtail for 175€ online. The previous owner was eager to sell it to buy parts for his DH bike and just wanted to get rid of the bike. It only needed some tuning and new break pads for it to ride like a new bike. He left it in the sun so the paint is chipped but that's nothing some stickers can't fix. I'm riding it since October and it's a beast.
Drive train is 3×8, need to change derailer hangar and it has V-brakes which I can upgrade to Disks in the future.
I'm happy with this, there's no way I could get anything more than a frame at a bike shop for that price.

Some cities in the US has swap spots which are often in very public places or even in front of supervised police stations with lots of cameras. Great spots to potentially scare off suspicious sellers and also trade your own stuff if you feel uncomfortable having a stranger show up at your house.

🔥Very interesting from a sellers point of view as well GMBN ! 🔥 I’m literally at that point now do I fix it up? break it up ? Or sell it as it is ? And the bigger question when is the best time to sell on your bike ? Both time of year and point of which it is worn !!
