We use to boil big round,smooth river rocks and put them in the buckets to thaw them or keep them from freezing too fast. Just in the severest weather.
Hi Codi, great video of your winter chores. You picked a good time for this video with the cold temperatures and the snow. I think that having good connections and learning from others goes for any business but can definitely see were it would help with homesteading. One challenge with animals is that they need to be taken care of no matter what the weather outside is. Watching this on Christmas Day, so Merry Christmas and wishing you and your family the best for 2023.
@@morethanfarmers He was doing well when I did my last hay and water check before bed. He has four blankets on. The winds are supposed to die down overnight so I’ll be able to get them out tomorrow. I think getting moving will help get that digestive tract really moving and moving will keep him warmer! We dropped just under 20° yesterday morning in just shy of an hour and a half! Southern Ontario, Canada!

I myself live in south west Michigan. I'm wondering with the snow and cold you seem to get what regin of Ohio you live in. Keep up the good work, and keep your dreams flowing.

Good job keeping it all going through the storm! Up here in Alberta Canada when it’s cold and my fingers start freezing I alternate hands to warm up. I take one hand and tuck my fingers up against her bag and milk with one, then switch. She doesn’t mind at all takes no notice of my cold fingers and it’s the only way to get through it when it gets really cold. Also helps a little to try and keep your fingers touching each other while milking. My Jersey has short hind teats so it’s just normal winter milking procedure for me lol. When you get back inside the ice milk on the sides of the bucket thaw fast😉
Yeah, I'm sure you've gotta deal with it up there a lot more than I do. We usually only get one or two really cold spells like this. Most of the winter is cold, but much more bearable. I actually think I prefer hand milking when it's cold.. keeps you warmed up. Plus, now that she's giving less milk I don't think the milker saves me much if any time.
Bless it! I could not imagine!! I live in mid TN, we’ve had some “rough” winters but not like that 🥶. We have. Vevor milker and it doesn’t take oil. It’s electric so as long as we have a plug in our barn we have a working milker.
We had the same problem with our chickens and I started giving them our extra milk and they are laying like crazy over winter here with no extra light. You'd probably need an extra milk cow to supplement as many chickens as you have though ;)
Nice! We've spent a lot of time and energy figuring out how to get our chickens to lay more.. We've had really good success the last couple years now, but I think they just got stressed out so much over the summer with the hawks. When they get super stressed like that they pretty much never fully recover 😕
Are you checking to make sure the alfalfa you get is not genetically modified or is that not a thing in your state? Also I want to know if it is necessaary in your view to get organic feed for your chickens and cows since glyphosate s can be used on many farm crops. Thanks
So the hay we feed our cows in the winter isn't certified organic. But the hay we get isn't from a conventional crop field. To my knowledge, it's not sprayed. The alfalfa hay that we get is also not gmo.

I did chores in -30 today. My oldest horse was inside and his temp was so low it wouldn’t read. Almost lost him.
