About Giants Stadium 6/17/91: Sure to be a crowd pleaser, 6/17/91 is one of only two shows in the Grateful Dead's archive recorded to 48-track analog tape, providing spectacular and unprecedented audio quality. Worth the money. All shows were killer. The Dylan/Dead set from 87 changed my perspective on what limits could be reached during a live performance. John Brown showed me there was no limit.

Saw The Dead 7/7/89 JFK. Saw The Who 7/9/89 Veterans Stadium Philly on my 18th birthday. Saw the Dead 7/10/89 Giants Stadium. Wild week. Both Dead shows were excellent. We know that by now. The Who was The Who 25th anniversary. Tommy. Great Summer. Oh, snuck into Jefferson Airplane at The Mann Music Center. Too easy. First & last time I ever did that. Allman Bros. at The Spectrum in August. JGB Spectrum 9/1/89. I dont have to explain the Dead Fall Run right? Exceptional.
I was at this show. BLOWN AWAY that they dug this one out! One of my all time favs! There's no DEAD without Jerry.
You are mistaken, I did tour for 15 years after his departure. Believe me, it is true.
I was born in 2000 & often get incredibly bummed out I missed Jerry. Then I went to dead & company this last summer. That’s when I realized we love Jerry for Jerry, but the music of the dead lives on. Peace & love!
I tend to agree Garcia is woven into the fabric of the music he is August West alot of the songs are autobiographical

I saw this song at Sandstone 4th of July, 1990. It was so hot that day, they opened with Cold rain and snow, I didn't even notice the mothership I was so hot. But when they played this song it had such a groove. Can't believe it was out of the rotation so long. Good times.

So because of Bob's smirk at 3:40 , and because they show so much of Jerry's left hand during this solo I decided to learn it note for note and try to figure out exactly what it was that drew that reaction from Bob. My guitar playing skills are sub-mediocre at best so it took me many hours/days of FF/REW to get to this point czcams.com/video/HPEsj43Nzyw/video.html This was recorded as soon as I felt confident enough that I could get through the whole thing in one take, now 9 months later I can play it in my sleep, but I digress. The reason I learned it in the first place was to try to figure out what caused Bob to smirk, and for a month or 2 all I could come up with was that he just liked that little descending phrase of 4 notes around the 3:38 mark. It wasn't until GD dropped another Loose Lucy video from the previous summer at Orchard Park 7/16/90 czcams.com/video/v1kTPOhG1xM/video.html . So they dropped this video maybe 2 months after this 6/17/91 and because I had been 'into' Loose Lucy solo for the previous 2 months I started trying to learn the Orchard Park version of Jerry's solo. After messing around with it for a couple of hours and getting different sections down I decided to try playing this 6/17/91 solo over the 7/16/90 version and low and behold there it was...the reason for Bob's smirk on 6/17/91! When I tried playing the 6/17/91 solo over the 7/16/90 version, THE SOLO DIDN'T FIT!! In this 6/17/91 version Jerry adds like 2 extra beats around 3:29 where he does that little repeat before the change. The rest of the solo Jerry is playing catch up but the rest of the band is not in the mood to wait, but by the time Jer hits that descending tri at 3:39 everything is back in sync without having ever really fallen out of sync, hence the smirk from Bob. And when it was all said and done that solo section on 6/17/91 was 2 beats longer than a standard Loose Lucy solo section like on 7/16/90. One of the many reasons I LOVE THE GRATEFUL DEAD!!!

A lot of people that played with Jerry always said that they never thought he would "get there" when the progression changed or the song changed or whatever, "but he always did..."
Footnote: My first show! I had been to the parking lot once before but never caught the miracle. Amazing that they opened with Eyes
❤ even more of a reason to display just how fascinating the musician Jerry was truly very quick to adapt to fill in little gems to keep every time unique to his playing style of improvisational this is true that songs were never played the same way identical he was truly chasing notes in a way that only Jerry could do. He made it look so effortless and I believe Bobby smiled because he understood the sincere Genius of all that Jerry embodied and was just enjoying yet another musical gem like man he just pulled that out of thin air and wow blown away moment to see the happy times thats what truly separates this band apart from any other just total enlightenment ❤❤❤

How wicked would it have been to be there "elevated" and watching Jerry's hair flapping like a scruffy angels wings. Love John Mayer but, Jerry will always be the original godfather of psychedelic solos.

It was as awesome as you could imagine. Caught a dozen or so shows in 91 starting with the epic Vegas run late April, although Jerry's 'Wizard' look didn't really hit full stride until they hit the midwest in June. 1991 was a great great year.

Brent was so amazing, obviously impossible to replace in so many ways; but I really do love Bruce and Vince combining forces on the keys. Bruce worked so well with Jerry, Vince just added to the mix. More the merrier

@@dyrwolf Wasn't 91 the Violent Femmes opening, 1st show after Brent passed, with Hornsby & Welnick? I loved that show, second set I got near the front & could see Jerry's face/emotions. I saw several there. We both know how huge those crowds @Buckeye got. Blessed to see those tours... liked PineKnob Michigan too. Small world, we may have walked by one another.
@@jeffreypetro3803 I believe so. 91 and 92 we sat top of hill head on at stage, where there were a couple trees. Took my 5 years old son to 92, last show before diabetic coma #2. Buckeye was a circus spectacle that will not be repeated. Huge drum circles and vending in the woods, the parking lot went on for miles.

@@jamin_pakk I know. One from the GD movie and a couple from the closing of Winterland. It's just that 95% of the uploads on here have been from the end of the Brent era through '93. The theme is All The Years and 87-92 has been the main focal point. As far as official releases go of vintage Dead, we have the Festival Express 1970, April '72, Oregon '72, etc.and none of that has been posted to this All The Years theme.

Maybe, but...Dave said when starting this All The Years thing that we'd be seeing stuff we haven't before. Plus there is footage in the archives from the Carousel Ballroom or is it the Family Dog from 1970, Festival Express June/July 1970, Europe '72, etc that you can find on youtube as well that is in good quality.
