I started watching this video thinking "this is just for those people who've never done anything in their computer before" but after having seen it and having over 25 years experience with building computers and all of that actually learnt a thing or two! What's not a video that I watch completely? Definitely something worth to send to family members when they need to troubleshoot or set up their first PC

When I first encountered these, It took me at least an 10-15 minutes to figure that it was a cable dangling by my fan, and it took me nearly an hour to figure out what was coil whine. I don’t even need the video, I wish I just saw this comment way back then

I love the "Linux users... I love you, but you already know how to install Linux. Come on." I mean, I think now more than ever more people are considering switching to Linux based desktop operating systems than ever before, but even then the linux community is essentially a very special group of geeky nerds (and I LOVE THAT). I think your videos on daily driving linux and gaming on linux are a good start for getting people into it, though I think an actual overview or guide for Debian, Red Hat and Arch based systems (the most common distributions, or forks of distributions that you'll run into) would be nice for people who are interested in making the switch, or at the very least dipping their toes into the world of Linux. Of course, many people have already done that, but you guys have the resources and the audience to make a big impact, and I think you guys would really knock it out of the park. Anyways, fantastic video guys!

There are many sellers and free tools available to activate Windows. I tried several sources but they all stopped working after a couple of months. After dip research I found a great company and haven't had any issues since.
It's another high effort, slow burner like "How to build a PC". Views will be low for a while but it will pay off in the end like their other multi host video's.
I do like when LTT does a more simple video that's not so extravagant every now and again. THis is something that will stand the test of time... or at least for a pretty long time
This is the part I dread the most about getting a new PC, setting it up correctly... You need a checklist to make sure you did everything... It would be great if someone with mad organization and office sheet skills could make a checklist including everything on this video and publish it online for the community.
Tip for LTT: @4:45 you should use more visuals to explain what you mean by motherboard port vs. Graphics card port. Some might not know how to identify them on their computer.
Switched from desktop to gaming laptop a year ago. Always wondered why sometimes my mouse would just stop working and would have to sleep the computer for several minutes and wake up for it to be recognized again. Disabling USB selective suspend finally fixed that. Thank God.
Recent swap user too. There is a setting for when you close your lid to not turn off PC or put it to sleep. Its the most helpful tool ive found cause i use a 42" 4k tv as my monitor, so i close my lid to keep dust off the laptop insides. All external mouse keyboard so i dont ruin the built in one. just have to game at 60fps 4k rather than 144hz 1080p but its worth it on a 42 inch i think
@@imtoxicAF that definitely is a lifesaver when I connect to a TV. But my problem was that if I was watching a long video with the lid open and not actively using my USB mouse, it would assume that it’s an active I guess and just cut input until I did a sleep or restart. Trackpad would still work fine, but when I have my laptop, not on the go, I generally have a USB mouse and keyboard plugged in and it was driving me nuts that the mouse would just stop working sometimes. lol
@@Quadzillart yeah it prob does that in device manager power settings for that input. but i think it could be default in your bios too. maybe windows latches on some of those bios settings from usb sleep mode. theres always like more than one way to skin a cat ive been told

35:36 Heres a good tip for you, don’t waste your money buying anything that has RGB on it and instead spend the money you save on more memory, faster CPU or bigger SSD etc. Your PC will thank you for it in 5/7 years time.
When I was in my 20’s I lived in town and could order a fast internet connection but I was too poor for a bawling PC. Now that I’m in my 40’s I can afford a bawling computer to play pc online but live out of town, can’t find high speed internet to service my home. Even starlink doesn’t work well because of tree cover. Love life. Keep up the great videos
When putting the PC on the floor on carpet, I’d recommend getting an inexpensive laminated shelf from your local hardware store. You can get one that’s just slightly larger than the case’s footprint, and it gives you vastly improved airflow. Plus, you can slide the entire shelf on carpet when you need to access the back, without having to lift it up.
This is similar to what I've been doing for years. I take a cheap 20.5 x 20.5 x 2 table top (the kind where the legs have screws that drive directly into the bottom of the top) and have it resting on top of the carpet next to my TV. This also limits the size of the case I can get, but it's not that big of a deal since I want my case to be on the smaller side for the times I have to move it next to my desk. The carpet itself is not very thick either, and regular vacuuming really keeps the dust buildup really low. Only ever have to clean the filter maybe every six weeks.
This is way more complicated to the average newbie than you guys think. A lot of the things you have suggested are more meant for somewhat seasoned PC enthusiasts. Even I (not an enthusiast. but avid watcher) find some of the things in this video confusing and daunting, as they show so many different types of configurations and options that most likely won't apply to me or most users at all.
I’ve built 3 pc’s and would consider myself pretty well read in computers and tech and I still was able to learn a couple of things from this video. Well done guys!

@@Finkelfunk Yes because the very reason that you need to be a "wizard" to do this is BECAUSE there' no wide-audience tutorials that are easy to follow for this stuff. They could've done that here and actually solved the problem but instead they're perpetuating it
@@ThompYT The thing is that unless you go for Arch, Gentoo or Void the installation is easier than windows (at leas IMO) it's just a simple wizard, faster and smaller than the Windows install stuff. For example, Pop_Os! Basically installs itself, the hardest thing to do is choose your keyboard layout or partition layout (which you also have to do in Windows and I think is easier with GParted), in case of distros like Arch and that... the books are really good, the archwiki is awesome and the gentoo handbook is incredible, a bit hard to navigate at first but once you know your system it's masive, and this guide is for first time install, so yeah although I think they should have shown some linux distro like Mint, I don't think they should show distros which are for learning or power users.
My God this video confused the hell out of me. I never remembered there being so many technically complex steps. Especially with driver installation, it seems like he installed everything twice. I love Linus but this video completely lost me. It's so fast paced, it's like a setup speed race or something. I thought it was supposed to be for novice users trying to learn and understand. Hopefully I can find a more in-depth tutorial where someone slowly takes you through it without talking a mile a minute and flashing to a bunch of different screens. This video was a panic attack.
@@danulispharonis778 No you're not. I've been building again recently. Some pretty high end machines in fact, and I didn't have to do anything near what they do in the software installation department. Aside from updating the bios with a flash drive, as long as you correctly install Windows and run Windows update fully, then you can usually run the software installer that is specifically made you your Mobo, which will install unique drivers Windows misses, your good. Then it's just a matter of correctly tweaking your BIOS settings for optimal performance and then doing the same in Windows settings. It's not the open heart surgery this video describes. Only other thing I can think to say is be careful using your mobos software installer (for me MSI Center) because it can install bloatware if not careful and most of them are pretty crappy in general for your system. They are good for a first check, but afterwards I uninstall them and let Windows do the work, then I just pay attention to my Mobo manufacturer website from time to time to see if there were any big updates for my board that windows has not kept me current on, but its not usually necessary as long as your system is running good. Don't think you're dumb, you could do this, it's not hard.

I'm a 17 year old pc enthusiast from India with minimum resources. It was just recent that my father got me a pc case with ARGB fans. But I just installed the cable from the hub to the M.B. 2 days ago but I was unable to make the RGB work With RGB fusion in which the fans did not show up and pressing the mb button on the Hubs remote just made the fans rgb start up once for half a second and then turn off for it to turn back on 2 seconds later. I was unable to fix it for the past 2 days but after watching the video and learning about Signal RGB it randomly works! I also learned a lot of new things like how to stress test and monitor temps and stuff alike. I'm very grateful to this channel and everyone who works so hard to make such awesome, entertaining and informative videos. Please keep making Such awesome videos and thank you for teaching me everything I know about pcs.

Parental controls are built into Windows. Software to install: nothing, whatever they wanna play. Software to uninstall: anything you don't want them to have. Hope this helps.

Seriously though, watching this feels like a simulator of the evening after you have just built a new PC. You know that new car smell that, when you get a little whiff of it, takes you back to the last time you got a new car? This is the "new PC smell".
You should have mentioned the windows HDR calibration tool used to calibrate the min/max nits of the display and how it needs done per display. It makes a very large difference in the HDR quality in Windows 11 (I don't believe Windows 10 supports this HDR calibration, at least it didn't on the version I tested yesterday) Edit: just finished the video and this is my ONLY criticism of the video. Woah woah woah, Linus man, your validation team missed the totally incorrect colour of the audio input jack, which is pink or pantone 701C. There is no red at all in the specification, but the closest might be the red often used for a right audio channel. After that important episode from Red vs Blue, you would be aware that there's a colour for light red, it's called pink.
I never understood why people think using a camera to take a picture of your face is more secure than a good password. Instead of somebody needing to go to the trouble of stealing your password all they need is a half decent picture of your face to get in.
Openrgb is also a good alternative to multiple rgb controlling software, doesn’t detect everything but is pretty lightweight and i believe still in active development

Appreciate the one caption mentioning Linux. Actually, this video turned out to be very informative, because I can't be bothered to figure out the best settings for Windows 11 when I only use it to appease companies who might think I'm hacking/cheating if I use Linux.
I use OpenRGB to manage all the lighting for my peripherals. The GUI isn't as pretty or as easy to use as the those mainstream ones; but it's extremely lightweight, extremely configurable with plugins, and It will work with all my hardware with a single plugin that barely uses any resources in my system tray.
I recently bought 4 tb m.2 drive and after installing windows, after 20-60 mins of playing video games on it my PC shuts down and after 1 min restarts. I ran stress tests, disk scans, checked psu voltages, temperatures, and everything seems fine. I returned it for a replacement, but do you have an idea what might had been causing that? I am waiting for their side and in a week or so will hopefully get a replacement to test it out, but I am scared I will run into the same problem again. Motherboard: MSI Z590 Unify in slot m_1 The Disk: 4tb GoodRam PX700
As a Linux user. I have a script that will remove things I do not want/use, sure hexchat and transmission are fine, but I have no need for them, it will install all my programs I use, add my NAS to the system, it will then mount my NAS and copy my latest dated backup over and also copy over a backup of my steam library, it will then do an update of the whole system and then clean things up(things downloaded, purge caches, temp files, etc) If you know how to use powershell you too can make the same kind of post install script.
@@hammerth1421 MS keeps reinstalling that shit on Win10. The school sounds like it was run by idiots. Schools have Pro/Enterprise versions of WIndows and thus have the Group Policy Editor. That shit can be disabled in the GPE. Unless that is what you meant
I honestly don't understand why everybody is so opposed to having their icons centered in Windows 11. Personally I find them easier and quicker to access in the middle compared to pushing them to the bottom left corner
29:45 careful with different scaling on multiple monitors, there are programs that don't like it, and look blurry, when moving a window between the screens, or completely black out
I like to think i know my way around windows better than the average person, but a few of these i didnt even know about. Like OOBE. I had no idea you could actually disable the requirement for a microsoft acct. I know you can bypass it by leaving your ethernet unplugged and any wifi antennas removed during setup, which is what I do. But occasionally you still get prompts to set it up, which sometimes does this weird split/merge account "feature" where it either creates an entirely new user on your pc or does some unholy mishmash of what you had before and whats on your microsoft acct if you do set one up. It is so nice to be able to just remove the requirement entirely.
I've been building my own PCs since I was in my early teens from parts I found in a skip outside the local fire station so I don't need this video at all. BUT BUT BUT I fucking LOVE that you guys have made an entry-level basics video for people who are new to the hobby/lifestyle. Beautifully done as always, and there's always things to learn even for those of us who've been building PCs in our sleep for decades! I'd love to see a whole series of "introduction to...". Like "wtf is a core?" "what's the difference between memory and storage?". Again I don't need the answers, but I guarantee there are people (esp. students) who do.
As I saw that you were going to "System -> Power" at: 22:19 I remembered one of my problems I have with my Pc. When I go to "System -> Power" my Pc is really unresponsive as well as it is, when I Alt+Tab in and out of games. Its like my Pc freezes for maybe 3-5 sec or even longer. I also tried reinstalling windows, made sure I've got every Driver thats needed but am not able to fix it. Maybe someone in the comments here has or had the same problem and knows how to fix it.

Two things: - While you were talking about removing tpm requirement you showed pirate flag. It have nothibg to do with piracy. You just use rufus to modify iso and you still can acrivate windows when tou install it. - account requirement during initial setup is not requirement. By that I ean that you don't need to use this command to set up your windows without microsoft account. You still can do it either by typing wrong oassword to some email or by clicking "domain" login or something like that.
I literally just built my pc a day before this came out. i wish i had hold off a few days, this vid would have saved so many headaches. good watch though, glad to see i did everything right.

For anyone using an MSI board. ABSOLUTELY update before touching the bios. Enabling rebar or tpm 2.0 on an updated bios will just make you lose VGA signal and you'd either need to flash it with a button if your mobo has it or just warranty replace it repair it.

I'd really like you to talk about encrypting with built-in disk hardware encryption rather than bitlocker. I see this on spec sheets and referenced all the time by tech people, who seem to universally agree it's far superior to bitlocker. But despite looking, NO ONE that I can find has ever talked about how to set it up and use it properly. Including the disk manufacturers themselves.
24:15 I totally agree with you. I always run under the assumption that filetype extensions are visible. and go out of my way to always turn it off when I notice it's turned on. I also end up changing a lot of the settings here away from their default. I'm an oldschool user, I want to make every decision about files and folders personally on a case by case basis, not have the system assume what I want and do it automatically, and I want to know all the information, and have nothing hidden from me.

Yeah not all Linux users know how to install Linux. I mean yeah it's easy, but at least to preparing the ISO point should be really helpful.
This and the mentioned videos maybe a bit on the older side. It would be a fresh breeze if LTT would renew one or two videos. :)

Switched from desktop to gaming laptop a year ago. Always wondered why sometimes my mouse would just stop working and would have to sleep the computer for several minutes and wake up for it to be recognized again. Disabling USB selective suspend finally fixed that. Thank God.
Recent swap user too. There is a setting for when you close your lid to not turn off PC or put it to sleep. Its the most helpful tool ive found cause i use a 42" 4k tv as my monitor, so i close my lid to keep dust off the laptop insides. All external mouse keyboard so i dont ruin the built in one. just have to game at 60fps 4k rather than 144hz 1080p but its worth it on a 42 inch i think
@@imtoxicAF that definitely is a lifesaver when I connect to a TV. But my problem was that if I was watching a long video with the lid open and not actively using my USB mouse, it would assume that it’s an active I guess and just cut input until I did a sleep or restart. Trackpad would still work fine, but when I have my laptop, not on the go, I generally have a USB mouse and keyboard plugged in and it was driving me nuts that the mouse would just stop working sometimes. lol
@@Quadzillart yeah it prob does that in device manager power settings for that input. but i think it could be default in your bios too. maybe windows latches on some of those bios settings from usb sleep mode. theres always like more than one way to skin a cat ive been told

When I was in my 20’s I lived in town and could order a fast internet connection but I was too poor for a bawling PC. Now that I’m in my 40’s I can afford a bawling computer to play pc online but live out of town, can’t find high speed internet to service my home. Even starlink doesn’t work well because of tree cover. Love life. Keep up the great videos

When putting the PC on the floor on carpet, I’d recommend getting an inexpensive laminated shelf from your local hardware store. You can get one that’s just slightly larger than the case’s footprint, and it gives you vastly improved airflow. Plus, you can slide the entire shelf on carpet when you need to access the back, without having to lift it up.
This is similar to what I've been doing for years. I take a cheap 20.5 x 20.5 x 2 table top (the kind where the legs have screws that drive directly into the bottom of the top) and have it resting on top of the carpet next to my TV. This also limits the size of the case I can get, but it's not that big of a deal since I want my case to be on the smaller side for the times I have to move it next to my desk. The carpet itself is not very thick either, and regular vacuuming really keeps the dust buildup really low. Only ever have to clean the filter maybe every six weeks.
This is way more complicated to the average newbie than you guys think. A lot of the things you have suggested are more meant for somewhat seasoned PC enthusiasts. Even I (not an enthusiast. but avid watcher) find some of the things in this video confusing and daunting, as they show so many different types of configurations and options that most likely won't apply to me or most users at all.
I’ve built 3 pc’s and would consider myself pretty well read in computers and tech and I still was able to learn a couple of things from this video. Well done guys!

The same applies to Gentoo. If you are demanding a Gentoo guide, chances are you realistically don't need a Gentoo guide.

@@ThompYT The thing is that unless you go for Arch, Gentoo or Void the installation is easier than windows (at leas IMO) it's just a simple wizard, faster and smaller than the Windows install stuff.
For example, Pop_Os! Basically installs itself, the hardest thing to do is choose your keyboard layout or partition layout (which you also have to do in Windows and I think is easier with GParted), in case of distros like Arch and that... the books are really good, the archwiki is awesome and the gentoo handbook is incredible, a bit hard to navigate at first but once you know your system it's masive, and this guide is for first time install, so yeah although I think they should have shown some linux distro like Mint, I don't think they should show distros which are for learning or power users.
My God this video confused the hell out of me. I never remembered there being so many technically complex steps. Especially with driver installation, it seems like he installed everything twice. I love Linus but this video completely lost me. It's so fast paced, it's like a setup speed race or something. I thought it was supposed to be for novice users trying to learn and understand. Hopefully I can find a more in-depth tutorial where someone slowly takes you through it without talking a mile a minute and flashing to a bunch of different screens. This video was a panic attack.

@@danulispharonis778 No you're not. I've been building again recently. Some pretty high end machines in fact, and I didn't have to do anything near what they do in the software installation department. Aside from updating the bios with a flash drive, as long as you correctly install Windows and run Windows update fully, then you can usually run the software installer that is specifically made you your Mobo, which will install unique drivers Windows misses, your good. Then it's just a matter of correctly tweaking your BIOS settings for optimal performance and then doing the same in Windows settings. It's not the open heart surgery this video describes.
Only other thing I can think to say is be careful using your mobos software installer (for me MSI Center) because it can install bloatware if not careful and most of them are pretty crappy in general for your system. They are good for a first check, but afterwards I uninstall them and let Windows do the work, then I just pay attention to my Mobo manufacturer website from time to time to see if there were any big updates for my board that windows has not kept me current on, but its not usually necessary as long as your system is running good. Don't think you're dumb, you could do this, it's not hard.

I'm a 17 year old pc enthusiast from India with minimum resources. It was just recent that my father got me a pc case with ARGB fans. But I just installed the cable from the hub to the M.B. 2 days ago but I was unable to make the RGB work With RGB fusion in which the fans did not show up and pressing the mb button on the Hubs remote just made the fans rgb start up once for half a second and then turn off for it to turn back on 2 seconds later. I was unable to fix it for the past 2 days but after watching the video and learning about Signal RGB it randomly works! I also learned a lot of new things like how to stress test and monitor temps and stuff alike. I'm very grateful to this channel and everyone who works so hard to make such awesome, entertaining and informative videos. Please keep making Such awesome videos and thank you for teaching me everything I know about pcs.

You should have mentioned the windows HDR calibration tool used to calibrate the min/max nits of the display and how it needs done per display. It makes a very large difference in the HDR quality in Windows 11 (I don't believe Windows 10 supports this HDR calibration, at least it didn't on the version I tested yesterday)

There is no red at all in the specification, but the closest might be the red often used for a right audio channel.

Actually, this video turned out to be very informative, because I can't be bothered to figure out the best settings for Windows 11 when I only use it to appease companies who might think I'm hacking/cheating if I use Linux.

I use OpenRGB to manage all the lighting for my peripherals. The GUI isn't as pretty or as easy to use as the those mainstream ones; but it's extremely lightweight, extremely configurable with plugins, and It will work with all my hardware with a single plugin that barely uses any resources in my system tray.
I recently bought 4 tb m.2 drive and after installing windows, after 20-60 mins of playing video games on it my PC shuts down and after 1 min restarts.
I ran stress tests, disk scans, checked psu voltages, temperatures, and everything seems fine.
I returned it for a replacement, but do you have an idea what might had been causing that?
I am waiting for their side and in a week or so will hopefully get a replacement to test it out, but I am scared I will run into the same problem again.

I have a script that will remove things I do not want/use, sure hexchat and transmission are fine, but I have no need for them, it will install all my programs I use, add my NAS to the system, it will then mount my NAS and copy my latest dated backup over and also copy over a backup of my steam library, it will then do an update of the whole system and then clean things up(things downloaded, purge caches, temp files, etc)
If you know how to use powershell you too can make the same kind of post install script.

I like to think i know my way around windows better than the average person, but a few of these i didnt even know about. Like OOBE. I had no idea you could actually disable the requirement for a microsoft acct. I know you can bypass it by leaving your ethernet unplugged and any wifi antennas removed during setup, which is what I do. But occasionally you still get prompts to set it up, which sometimes does this weird split/merge account "feature" where it either creates an entirely new user on your pc or does some unholy mishmash of what you had before and whats on your microsoft acct if you do set one up. It is so nice to be able to just remove the requirement entirely.
I've been building my own PCs since I was in my early teens from parts I found in a skip outside the local fire station so I don't need this video at all. BUT BUT BUT I fucking LOVE that you guys have made an entry-level basics video for people who are new to the hobby/lifestyle. Beautifully done as always, and there's always things to learn even for those of us who've been building PCs in our sleep for decades! I'd love to see a whole series of "introduction to...". Like "wtf is a core?" "what's the difference between memory and storage?". Again I don't need the answers, but I guarantee there are people (esp. students) who do.
As I saw that you were going to "System -> Power" at: 22:19 I remembered one of my problems I have with my Pc.
When I go to "System -> Power" my Pc is really unresponsive as well as it is, when I Alt+Tab in and out of games. Its like my Pc freezes for maybe 3-5 sec or even longer. I also tried reinstalling windows, made sure I've got every Driver thats needed but am not able to fix it. Maybe someone in the comments here has or had the same problem and knows how to fix it.

Two things:
- While you were talking about removing tpm requirement you showed pirate flag. It have nothibg to do with piracy. You just use rufus to modify iso and you still can acrivate windows when tou install it.
- account requirement during initial setup is not requirement. By that I ean that you don't need to use this command to set up your windows without microsoft account. You still can do it either by typing wrong oassword to some email or by clicking "domain" login or something like that.
I literally just built my pc a day before this came out. i wish i had hold off a few days, this vid would have saved so many headaches. good watch though, glad to see i did everything right.

For anyone using an MSI board. ABSOLUTELY update before touching the bios. Enabling rebar or tpm 2.0 on an updated bios will just make you lose VGA signal and you'd either need to flash it with a button if your mobo has it or just warranty replace it repair it.

I'd really like you to talk about encrypting with built-in disk hardware encryption rather than bitlocker. I see this on spec sheets and referenced all the time by tech people, who seem to universally agree it's far superior to bitlocker. But despite looking, NO ONE that I can find has ever talked about how to set it up and use it properly. Including the disk manufacturers themselves.

I also end up changing a lot of the settings here away from their default.
I'm an oldschool user, I want to make every decision about files and folders personally on a case by case basis, not have the system assume what I want and do it automatically, and I want to know all the information, and have nothing hidden from me.
