Fun fact: John Landis is the one who told Eddie he wanted him to play an old Jewish man. When Landis was having trouble getting the movie greenlit, he had Eddie come to the studio in character as the old Jewish man. The guy who had the power to greenlight the movie did not even know that it was Eddie Murphy until he revealed himself. The movie was greenlit after that and went on to become an international success even overseas in Asia.

Another fun fact: Charlie Murphy, Eddie's brother was briefly used in the barbershop scene to double for Eddie when Akeem sits down in the chair for his haircut. When they cut to Eddie as the barber, you still see the top of Akeem's forehead. That was actually Charlie Murphy filling in. Arsenio Hall mentioned that on his show.

Clint Smith is a childhood friend of Eddie Murphy's. I guess Eddie helps him out because pretty much the only screen time he has been in are bit roles in Murphy's movies like 48Hrs and Trading Places. He was also playing small parts on Saturday Night Live from 1982-84 when Eddie was a cast member.

Clint was the guy that Charlie Murphy was talking about in the "I Want More" True Hollywood Story. Charlie was supposed to name him "Darryl" but he kept slipping up and calling him Clint and they tried to censor it with the sound but you can see his lips form the name. He was a problematic drinker which led his career with and without Eddie to falter

MR. CHURCH was the movie where Eddie Murphy was playing a cook for a white family. In COMING TO AMERICA, Eddie and Arsenio Hall each played 4 characters. In the barbershop scenes, Eddie played 2 characters, Clarence the barber, and Saul, the old Jewish white guy. Arsenio Hall played barber Morris, who always just sits down and eat plates of food. The 3rd barber named Sweetwater was played by Clint Smith, Eddie's best friend who appeared in his other movies TRADING PLACES, 48 HOURS, and on Saturday Night Live with Eddie.

@Frank Silvers So it was not clear to the person I responded to. Race and the concept of "whiteness" is overly complicated in the US, changing over time. In addition referring to someone as "Jewish" can refer to both religion and ethnicity. Yes, most people in the U.S. would now consider Ashkenazi Jews as white but some (including many white nationalists among others) do not. Was trying not to get into it in a CZcams comment section.
