When I was 5 (1972) if I was lucky, we would get stopped at the Calumet City "crossing with the Double gates" (River Oaks Drive west of Arthur Street next to the River Flame (long gone) Restaurant and Arthur Treachers. Around 7PM a hot metal train from the South Side would FLY SB at 70MPH (to Valley Mould and Iron in Lansing I think, I was 5) but my Dad told me what the glow was at the top of the cars and I was HOOKED! Wow! Led by a single Penn Central engine laying on the whistle it flew by and I was in awe to this day, about how they needed to run something so scary to me, so fast and thus, the need for the 2 gate EB and 2 gates WB. So cool. I was a train nut then and I am haunted by that scene to this day. Thank you for all your videos I have watched for over a decade!
Great video Frank. Really liked to see the high hood Norfolk Southern GP on the bottle train. I have to get up to Dolton Crossing when it gets warmer and see if I can catch the bottle train come through the crossing. It has been quite a while since I have been to Dolton. Thank you for sharing this video with us!

The horn on there sounds incredible.
6:49 Me when I become a train engineer @ 5 in the morning on the horn to wake everybody up.
No gondolas separating the bottle cars. Never seen THAT before! LOVE your work as I'm close to MP 506-507 on the NS lakefront by Horseshoe Casino
excellent!

Would love to see some of those high hoods one day
Nice catch! Very hard to find those high-hoods nowadays, even in remote control guise.
Nice old cast P3 on that
Really odd to see the old High Hood running backwards. Really uncomfortable position for the Engineer.
