- Ford 8.8 Time! Today Ill show you guys how to remove an explorer 8.8 without any power tools. Cave man style! This rear end is a great option to do a 4 wheel disk brake conversion and is a solid axle for drag racing!

I don't post much on twitter, but I will if I become more popular!

I want to thank everyone for supporting me thus far, and I hope I can continue making future videos that everyone will enjoy! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
The Door stickers will list the axle. Check the door before diving underneath to verify.
---Just my two cents.
I found that out a few months after cuz I got tired of looking under each one lol
Haha. Yeah that's what I was thinking too!
Thanks bro you where so helpful today I removed my first rear end at pick n pull got me a 3L73 rear end for my Crown Vic 💪🏽
Damn nice video!! Thanks, I needed this. Going to remove a rear end from an 98 explorer that's an hour away, and it's middle of winter and freezing cold! So nice to know and see what I've got to do before getting there!! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome! I hope it worked out for you!
Nightwrencher but he wrenches in the day. Savage.

So helpful man, just pulled a 4.10 trac lok for my 1949 ford f1
Thats awesome man! Thats gonna run great!
The 4.10s seem to be harder to find.
Are the expedition and explorer 8.8 the same ?
Don't think it's mentioned in the video or comments, but from my limited research before doing this, I believe the diff bolts are 5/16. At least I hope so, bc that's the socket I'm bringing.
Damn the junkyard I get parts from is hell compared to this lol
Lol usually its pretty bad but this time it was pretty good!
Maybe comment on how you determined it was a good rearend. With it off the ground how much play can you expect from left or right wheels
I had recorded a section explaining that but I cut it during editing. If Im just junkyard scrounging I usually just go by the wear on the pinions and ring gear. From my experience, these diffs wear super fast once the fluid goes low. If I can find one with little to no galling, thats the one I take home.
I would have kept the adapter for the drive line, then just get a U joint to fit that.
Thats exactly what I did afterward. Had to go back with a cordless sawzall and take the flanges. Paid like $10 for it I think.
Could I put one of these on my 01 v6 mustang?
Any chance in a GC8 update video? I recently purchased one as my own as my first car and would love to see what you do to yours to fix some of the problems (I.e. rust in the rear quarter)
We had an issue with the tranny and swapped it out, but I havnt posted the video! I am definately considering making more GC8 videos because they seem to be more popular!
What are all the tool numbers that I need to remove it? Help
cool! im gonna do an LS swap in my little isuzu truck (just like an s-10) and i'll need a stronger rear diff.
I dumped my dana 60 open diff for this and so far Im pretty happy!
cool!!
Can anyone tell me exactly which ford vehicles have the 8.8 3.73 lsd rear end?? Thanks
The most common one would be the one off the mid to late explorers. Not all of them came with the factory LSD so you can use the door jam sticker to narrow down your search at the junkyard.
Several of them. I believe they started installing them in 1986.
So you took one off from an explorer sport v6?
It doesnt have to be specifically sport V6. Look at the door jam sticker for "D1" "D2" "D4" "D5" or "L73" then look at the axle tag to verify what ratio it is.
So when you crack the case what do you look for
You look for damaged teeth with bad wear pattern and you make sure the fluid still feels like oil and not goop. If you can spin the tires, try to listen for growling or scaping
@@NightWrencher thank you
Was thinking of swapping an lsd out of an explorer to my 05 cvpi! Any tips? Thanks 🍺
I will bolt up but don't think the axles would work with the LSD carrier because as far as I know the explorer uses 31 spline axles and the CV uses 28 spline but if the CV also uses 31 spline its should work.
@@NightWrencher yes my 05 is 31 spline 👍
@@TaylorMadejdm1975 Then it should drop right in!
Does the yard help you load that thing or did you need some buddies to help lift it out
I really wish I had friends that would help me. The yard lent me a wheel barrow so i had to lug it all the way to the front and then they loaded it into my truck with a forkift.
I wish I had friends like you! You're awesome, bro, I'd fkn help ya.
@@byoobyoobyoobyoobyoo9785 😂 Thanks man!
bro you need a dewalt power impact gun... or a Milwaukee power ratchet
Lol I have a makita impact. But I get lazy and dont load up all my tools so I end up working harder later
How much hp can that rear end handle
I'm not sure exactly. The mustang guys push about 350- 400hp out of them but Im not sure myself. Right now I'm at 245whp and 295tq. After I install my 4.56 gears and the BTR stage 2 truck cam I should be close to 300whp
600+
alot... its 31 spline..
@@massivefins2597 depends on the year tho, doesn't it??
burque?
Hey I got a question. Can I take out a lsd out of a truck and put it in my e39 528i? Would that work?
If you've swapped it to a ford 8.8 housing then yes. If youre using the stock BMW housing then no
@@NightWrencher could you direct me to a video I dont know what you mean by the housing on a differential. Like put do you mean the axle?
@@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207 The "axle" is the entire differential assembly, axle shafts, housing, etc. The axle shafts are the skinny flanged parts that rotate the wheel. The housing is the case that houses both the axle shafts and differential. parts of the housing are the pumpkin or centersection and the axle tubes. The differential assembly is the ring and pinion(final drive gears, sometimes just called "gears"), spider gears and carrier inside the pumpkin part of the housing. So if you've replaced the stock BMW rearend with a Ford 8.8, then you can swap in any ford 8.8 carrier into it. If the rear end is still the stock BMW unit, then you can only use BMW parts inside.
@@NightWrencher thanks for the reply really helped me understand. I've seen some people talk about gears like 3.7 what's that about and do i need to be careful with those numbers and do those numbers have to match with my car's in some way?
@@gnarledcaptaintheduck9207 the numbers define the gearset inside the differential. Typically, changing it doesnt affect the rest of the car, unless its AWD or 4WD because the front and rear differentials have to match. The number is the number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the teeth on the pinion gear. So if your ring gear has 59 teeth and the pinion has 15 teeth then the ratio would be 3.93. So for every turn on the driveshaft the axle shafts spin 3.93 times. Slow cruiser and economy cars use lower number ratios to keep RPMs down for mpg at higher speeds at the cost of acceleration. Race cars and trucks normally want higher number gears to keep the engine in the powerband on the hwy or increase acceleration at the cost of MPGs and top speed.
Is this in Monrovia lol
Looks like it huh? All the pick a parts look the same lol
do you know how bad gear oil is for the soil?
Yes, but this is a junkyard, the people there are supposed to drain out all the fluids before the vehicles hit the yard. There's no more "soil" its all dirt mixed with oil, pretty much unusable forever, BUT again, this is a junkyard, so I don't think they care. Do I feel bad about it? Absolutely. The yards need to provide trays under all the cars and properly drain the cars to prevent things like this but what can you do.
Very nice video, HOWEVER, you should have not let fall all of that oil in ground.
I agree with you 100% but the junkyards here in california are supposed to drain all the fluids before letting the cars out in the yard so there wasn't supposed to be any fluid in the truck to begin with. And they dont provide drain buckets or somewhere to dump the oil so theres really not much we can do
Why do people talk so much about
