I love watching these in the morning, then coming back later in the day and watching them again with my guitar in my lap lol
That's actually really a great practice. Set the cognition in place, then recall and apply to the fretboard later. Bravo!
No doubts where Marty got his playing…truly amazing teacher
Thank you Matteo!
We are blessed for Marty to have shown us Chris those who want to learn are deserving ❤
This is quite possibly the best, most succinct, and easiest to understand explanation of seeing the relationship between scales and chords, and how to see and figure out the lesser used chords on the fretboard. Lots to unpack here. But great Chris. Thanks as always.
Thanks Robert! Let's head over to infallible eh?
I’ve been waiting for infallible all my life.
I am very glad I found your channel. The way you explain things makes the guitar understandable. You do this better than any other CZcams channel I’ve found. Thanks for your content.
You are so welcome. Thanks for being here.
Again, great for all musicians regardless of what you hold, strum, beat, plunk or blow into. And no 'cracking of skulls'. I sat at my keyboard and totally got this. THX!
Would love it if you came out w/ a full course taking someone on a guided lesson plan. Your teaching style is amazing. You make things so much less intimidating than others do. You have a gift.
I'm working on that over at Patreon! Thanks Roger!
This lesson is ridiculously amazing Chris!
Your ability to teach way beyond the mere “WHAT” and “HOW”, but really emphasize/demonstrate the “WHY” is pure gold.
The way you show how fundamental music theory concepts fall into place as they do on the fretboard is, as you put it…
INFALLIBLE 🙏
Thanks Joe, so glad you're here, and so grateful for your support.
Marty had you a possible follower, this video sealed the deal. I’m scatterbrained and rookie as all get out, but the few main teachers I have, I stick to. Then from time to time wander around to try and fathom what I couldn’t grasp from them. This helped with a great part of that. THANK YOU!
So glad to have been helpful, David. Thanks for being here.
DUDE! I don’t know what part of what you just did made it happen, but modes just all the sudden made sense to me. Ten minutes ago, I didn’t really get them. Now, they make perfect sense. Really appreciate the time and effort you put into creating the content; just made a legitimate and meaningful difference to me.
YES! That. Is.Why. I'm. Here!!!
You are seriously the BEST no wonder marty music got so big
Ha! Thanks for the views and comment.
Feels like we were given a cheat code for unlocking another dimension of music, nice work making it logical ✌🏽
Right? I have no idea why these types of things are much more widely taught.... ??
K-BOOM!! Something is leaking out my head! Oh its the knowledge you just dropped!
Fan-freaking-tastic!!!
Haha! Love it Scott, I had a good time doing this one, glad you like it!
I’ve never been accused of being the sharpest knife in the drawer, so this makes it digestible for me. Plus your Padawan Marty is awesome, so I’m committed to your teachings Master Chris!
Thanks Steve! Glad to have you here
You’re so sneaky sometimes...... love it. 🙏 Thanks Chris.
:)
My fallibility is the only thing infallible about me. As always, incredible lesson - thank you.
Thank you, Cory.
SUBSCRIBED ! I’m here b/c of your pentatonic lesson on Marty’s channel. It was an excellent lesson and really made my understanding grow. Thank you.
Welcome, and thanks for being here!
Mixolydian is really happy sounding. George Benson plays the scale straight thru in his song Breezin’. Cool scale. Great sound.
yeah, mix is wonderful. It's also a great rock mode...uplifting, but that flat 7 gives it a little weight to chew on!
Amazing. As soon I can I sign up for Patreon, right now I don’t even have a card yet to pay. Thank you
Hey Anna-Clara, thanks for the view and comment, I'd be thrilled to see you on Patreon! Meanwhile keep looking through those scales!! I'm glad you're here.
Man ,you are the absolute best !
Thanks John!
Much obliged, Chris.
These lessons are so good I feel like you tell us exactly what we need to know without all the bullshit. Found this channel through martys channel.
Thanks for swinging by, I really appreciate it.
Great explanations, really helped me see things better on the fretboard and stop making me a "slave to the dots", great line. Request; lite the lava lamp.
Of course!!! I must have missed it for this shoot!! Thanks Gru!
Great teaching as always, Chris! I love that minor major chord, so wierd, especially as a resolution.
Yeah it’s hard for me to hide my love of that chord structure…so wide and spooky sounding 👻👻
Not only the amazing quality of this information than impresses me, but it is also the way Chris explains it that makes it golden!
Thanks Claudio!
I have been waiting for this one! Loving the teaser at the end ;)
Cheers Chris!
Chris, I started playing a year ago and finding your channel has changed my life. Thank you for all you do, I will be supporting the patreon soon!
So glad to have you here! Thank you.
Thx for this Chris. Awesome Bro.
Great lesson again. Awesome stuff Chris
Thanks Christopher!
Your theory lessons are literally the best on yt, you‘re making it so easy to understand. Looking forward for more lessons :)
Thanks, Mike!
Your lessons are great Chris. Easy to follow. I see also the chords in the scales with caged. And for my friends they said wouw, to combine chords with scales, i,am very proud to do that. Now i study the song "new kid in town" where the tonic E changed in C#m (the VI) chord go to I. And the V B7 go to the I. I must learn so much. It's not in the scale but it sound great. And that matters! Keep on your good work Chris, i'am big fan.
Cool, thanks a tom Willi!
Great playing and channel. Thanks for the lesson.
You bet, Anthony!
Superb !
Mahalo for the most awesome lesson!
Glad it was helpful! Mahalo!
After finding you from Marty’s channel your teaching has really helped me take a leap in my playing mate, cheers from Aus
Glad to hear it, and glad you're here!
Thanks for this explanation Chris! Need get my fingers to be able to grab those notes.
You got this, no worries. It's that split double octave root thing that's the hardest right?
Thanks for all your support Tim!
You keep doing this stuff and you’re gonna be big. This is a standout channel.
Aw shucks Mark!
This is a great followup video that I commented on previously learn any scale.. previous comment below
"I noticed some of the scales you played in the examples had the same 1 3 5 triad so I assume different scales can have the same major chord. Interesting"
Awesome followup video.... thank you
Your comment was the inspiration for this one actually. Thank YOU!
I have been thinking about this lesson, and the trouble I have on the fretboard - either not knowing where I am, or knowing "exactly" where I am but not knowing where much else is.
And when you mention intervals as the atomic level a bit of a lightbulb came on.
I need to think more about Whole step, Whole step, Half Step, Whole Step, Whole Step, Whole Step, Half Step . . .
I tend to "get lost" when moving to another string, but I *do* know that if I am on the I on the 6th string, that the IV is the same fret on the 5th, and the V is up two frets on the 5th.
So, that gives me an anchor on the 5th string to look at intervals from and get a II or III or VI
and I know my root on the 4th is also down 2 frets (and 2 strings) from the root on the 6th
and then that gives me my IV & V on the 3rd string.
1st string is just the 6th string again, so that leaves the (troublesome) 2nd string.
not sure if this is going anywhere or not.
looking at my fretboard "map" (grid of notes), and counting, I "see" that staying on the same fret, but moving up a string is 2 1/2 steps (ignoring pesky 2nd string, which is 2 steps),
which I am sure is not "news" to anyone but me, lol.
so I need to think about intervals more. because right now, I have the 2 1/2 steps on the fretboard, but not in the scale. if you know what I mean.
but I feel like I am on the verge of "something". I won't say "a breakthrough". yet.
Ok that is cool!
I can see exactly the stuff you are talking about so, yes, I would call this a breakthrough. The coolest part is that you'll only see more, never less...so imagine what the fretboard will look like to you in 6 months!!!!
@@curiousguitarist I think some of my "issues" go back to how I learned chords.
it was always "your fingers go on these strings on these frets".
I never had the slightest inkling what the notes were besides the obvious root.
I didn't know a chord was 1-3-5, and even when I finally did know that, I still didn't (and don't!) know which string(s) have the 1, 3 or 5.
well, the 1's I sort of knew.
so, it was (and is!) maddening when someone is 'flatting the 3rd' and I don't know which string has the 3rd.
or they say 'I add a 7th' and I think 'how would I know where to find a 7th ????'
so, I've been trying to figure out "how" to learn. and then start learning.
Today’s lesson is the best I have seen to understand scales and the relationship with cords. My conclusion is Bminmaj7. You are in my list of the 3 best guitar instructors
You are correct with that BminMaj7 chord, Jose!
Thanks for being here.
Hi Chris, nice lesson. Thnx. Kind request: a lesson on playing counter point? Have a nice day, Marcel
Here you go Marcel,

@@curiousguitarist much obliged, Marcel
What a way to asked a question and leave you wondering. And sliding out of pic frame love it. Yup that’s my guitar teacher Lolol! Awesome. Stufff
Thanks Mel! Thanks for all your support!
Great lesson, I was racked on the chord 🤔 😅, but I think it’s a B min /Maj 7. Thanks again Chris. ✌🏼
Winner winner chicken dinner!!
Another great one, Chris! BmM7? Should there be a b6 in there too? Stayin' Curious!
ding ding ding! we have a winner!
Thanks for all your support Russell!
Great, Thanks, light bulb came on for me. Linking the scales to the different types of chords makes total sense. Playing a major chord before or after a Mixolydian riff just looses the flavor of the scale. Thanks!
Bam! That's it exactly.
If i can learn concise...the last few videos ..ill die a not happy ..but .a musician
So I have a playlist 'Sherland'.
Nice :) I'm honored.
@@curiousguitarist joined your Psteon. Great stuff.
@@adhoc37 thanks so much for the support! I appreciate it.
Love the color on that Gibson! Do you know the name of it by chance?
This is a Custom Shop ‘57 reissue, the color is called “Sweet Cherry”, and while it’s not super clear in these shots, the finish is translucent…just like scales are 😜
@@curiousguitarist I see what you did there :) Very nice, great channel!
Bmadd11maj7 is my answer. No, I did not phone a friend. That said, I don’t have formal music training so my nomenclature of chords is not certain.
It's BminMaj7 :)
😊
Could you use the harmonizing method to create the chord for modes? (1,3,5 starting on the first note of the mode)
Oh yeah! That works perfectly, and the result is pretty amazing if you’ve never done it!
@@curiousguitarist ok great. I got into learning music theory about 2 years ago (been playing a lot longer), but fell out of practice and now I’m starting at ground zero. Would be interested in connecting for lessons!

I like Ostrich soup !!
Hahaha!
What is a flat 4 I’ve never heard of it
It’s actually a sharp 4. It’s the scale tone that gives Lydian its personality.
Happy new year .!!..i dont always watch ..vids in . 1.. batch ..so dont look at my ;;/.all i wish is us ..many returns ...!##_*
Why is that Lydian chord breaking my fingers? lol
Ahhh the penalty of Lydian! There are other ways to play it, but that's just my fave :)
Sounds like Bm maj7....
Boom!
AHA CLICK
Well I’ll be damned!
Hope that's the good kind :)
