- Understanding and unlocking the fretboard comes fast when you apply music theory to the instrument. But there's so much out there that it can be overwhelming.
This is where you start, and everything builds from these two, easy to understand, and easy to map principles.

This lesson is why Chris Sherland is my go-to guy on CZcams. I just wish I had this knowledge 30 years ago! As I've learned, the fretboard is a life-long study, but this video is sure a great place to start. Thanks, Mr. Sherland!
Rock on, friend! You are so welcome, and I am so grateful to know you and have your support!
I don't even have to write my comment. I second this one. Wish I had this access 30 years ago.
My kid just sat through this lesson and understood everything! A testament to your clear and logical teaching style - thank you Chris!
Thank you JG, that warms me heart as well. And thanks for all your support for The Studio, that would not be the place it has become without you, friend.
A great way to look at the major scale, all whole steps except b-c & e-f. Thanks for the lesson 👍👍👍
I don't play, I have other gifts. But these clear, impeccably logical instructional sessions allow me to understand and appreciate, at a much deeper level, all my heroes. Many thanks for these fascinating gems. I'm almost tempted to head to the local pawnshop, find an axe, and give it a go.
Ha! You’d be in good company! Thanks for being here.
I think one thing that just occurred to me as I've never thought about it like this before is starting with each string open and counting up the frets is you're always going to end up at the same place i.e. the 12th fret. Excellent approach 👍
Yup, perfect!
Chris is the absolute best. Been following him since he started up his channel and he just gets better and better.
Yo Steven! How've you been brother? Hope all is well, it's good to see a glimpse of you now and again. I'm glad you enjoyed this one, stay in touch!
Still hanging in there. I'm more of a silent follower these days but rest assured I watch every single video you post.
You can't quite understand how important this is until you realize how very useful this theory stuff is. Much like cooking, you may have all the ingredients. But not knowing what order to put them is another story altogether. With practice/study, we can figure it out. Thanks, Chris!
Truth! Thanks, Joe!
Chris has an innate ability to explain things in easy to understand and follow. And he has great demonstrations on the guitar and makes you think about different ways to do things which unlock the fretboard. Thanks chris!!
You are so welcome!
Another good reminder of the core principles!
Wow I didn't know where you were going with this but I'm glad I kept watching, awesome info, I want to call it genius. You are the only teacher I totally understand by the end of your videos. ❤
"basic educational hygiene"
I love that! 😊
Thank you for your videos, you’re a life saver. I’m mostly self taught with guitar lessons here and there, and I’ve had a lot of gaps in my music theory knowledge over the past year or so. Your channel has really helped me in teaching myself guitar, and now I’ll have some skills to show my new guitar teacher I’m starting up with at the end of this month! Thank you.😄
You are so welcome! Self-education is the way to go, but it is only as effective as the foundation it is built upon.
I start with Chris Sherland!!! Mahalo!
Mahalo!
Laser focused teaching skills. Absolute go to CZcams channel for learning guitar. Thank you very much Chris.
My pleasure, Tom! Glad you're enjoying the channel.
I just started teaching myself to play a little less than a year ago, learned some songs, but when I realized I had no idea why I play them that way, I decided it was time to learn some music theory. My first road block was immediate, and it was "I don't know where to start". Thank you so much for this video. Crazy helpful to me!
Exactly what I was looking for in a beginner's intro video. Best I've seen yet. Clear, logical and fascinating. Many thanks.
Thanks Chris. Appreciate it.
Very well done Chris. Excellent video
Glad you enjoyed i, Josh!
Tnx sir for your theoretical music theory ,you know ,watching you every morning while taking my coffee before go to work is my morning habit ..so keep on coming sir !
You are welcome, all the best to you!
Excellent lesson
Glad you liked it!
Chris is the Man.
Thanks, mate!
Great lesson! Thanks! :)
Rock on!
Good content thank you Chris !
My pleasure!
"Educational Hygiene".. Yeah, Baby!!! Love your content, Chris! Keep Up the Great Work, and have a Great weekend!
Thanks so much, you too, David!
I use to use the acronym BIG CATS EAT FISH to remember where the half steps were. 😊🎸
Love that!!
@curiousguitarist If I could give a turbo thumbs up, I would. The only part that felt a bit underdeveloped is when you introduce the idea of how many fingers are used per string walking a scale progression. This is something that has puzzled me at first seeing guitarist friends walk scales from the headstock up to the neck. I guess it shows that not being aware of the neck navigation with respect to where notes are is the base problem to this... Thanks
Yeah, that notes-per-string idea is powerful...I could do a whole video on that. I really only introduced it here to demonstrate potential more than anything.
Thanks for the kind words, Marc. I appreciate it.
@@curiousguitarist I feel this is why the guitar learning process is so intimidating at first. The guitar fretboard is like having something like 3 piano keyboards stacked on top of each other. There is so much places you can play a given note. Why here instead of there ? Possibly "finger-walking economy" and such, but at first, you just don't get it.
On a piano, every note is living at a single place and it's linear. A guitar is kind of migrating from a 1 axis system to a two axis (two dimensions for the mathematicians 🙂) system. I guess that what I've said above is the explanation of > why < you need to learn the notes on the fretboard early in your journey ! ... To get the overwhelming feeling to go away ! ... And start seeing all this making sense.
I like to see a video talking about this aspect of the guitar if you don't have it already made.
Thanks Chris for all that valuable content. Much appreciated.
clever...
Do you have a recommendation for memorizing fretboard notes and/or notes in each chord (guitar specific of course) like a Quizlet set or ??
Here's a vid for learning the note locations on the fretboard. czcams.com/video/M6UAgi5nPyE/video.html
For chord note memorization I would recommend analyzing the notes in the chords you already know how to play. Tear them down and find the notes...you learn a LOT more that way IMHO.
...teach a man to fish...
@@curiousguitarist well do. I actually read music and play a few instruments. Been playing guitar for too long to not know theory. But I’m only a chord guy. (Sadly never took the time) but!!! My 12 y/o is getting a Taylor 210 for Christmas and is real motivated. So I’m thinker You - Marty- Her and I can learn together.
@@ClaimingChristianity love it!!
Wow a light bulb moment
Yes!!! That's what we're after here.
What’s pdf?
A PDF file is a document. This lesson has been documented and saved as a PDF file on my Patreon page.
I signed up, but I could not find a pdf...just a webpage.

@@curiousguitarist Thanks Chris - but that was where I was; it is a web page but I never saw a pdf. I must be doing something incorrectly.
@@mvp019 there’s a button there that says “grab it”, that leads you to the document.
I can also just email it to you if you’d rather
@@curiousguitarist I clicked on that and it opened the webpage I described - if you email it I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks and sorry to be such a bother!
@@mvp019 don’t apologize, no worries at all!

Why don't you show how to approach the theory behind the guitar solo purple haze and hotel California because this will teach non-theory guitarist how to figure out the theory of the scale notes relations with the chord changes. Purple haze solo is based on modal theory while Hotel california is based on adding in notes that aren't in the pentatonic scale plus the chord progression is NOT diatonic in one key.
I hope you enjoyed the video, Wayne.
