    So glad you mentioned image stabilization. My Z9 has excellent stabilization in-camera and that is critical with video, very important. I ordered the Nikon Z mount version. Looking forward to some great results. Your still images and video sequences are absolutely superb! I wish you all the best, and thanks for the excellent review.

    Love the Barred Owls when they start barking like that. Great lens. I have and enjoy the new 90mm. The 90mm has no weather sealing either, but, it does have an actual closed final element like a normal lens. It is 100% manual. Designed for mirrorless cameras. The viewfinder is very bright when using mirrorless cameras. Works great. At least on the R5. IBIS in the R5 works well with the lens. My habit when shooting high magnification macro photography is to focus by moving the camera, not the focus ring. But, the focus ring is very smooth if you need it. IBIS minimizes shake. I think this set up really works very well.

    Nice review Neil. I found this lens works really well with my Nikon Z6 as the viewfinder gives you a workable (brighter) image to focus and compose. The camera then takes the picture with the settings you have chosen. I usually use a flash for higher magnification macro. Also my camera has IBIS so that is not a problem. As you say, weather sealing is the only major thing missing.

    Hi Neil. Excellent review. One hint. The nuclesu follow focus is often reffered to as too weak. It is not. Just attache a higher voltage to the motor, wich is capable of 12 Volts, giving you enough power to run any focus wheel. If you stick to the 5 Volts, you won't manage to... :D all the best

    Excellent review of this amazing Macro lens, sir! I agree with your points, except if I may make the following observation on the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2x Ultra-Macro APO for the Nikon Z System...Yes, it is a fantastically sharp, well-built manual-focus only 2:1 Macro lens. Using it with a Nikon Z7, I'm able to obtain extremely sharp, detailed images across the frame. The ONE disappointment with this lens is that the "focus throw" is VERY short, meaning that a very small rotation of the focus ring results in a large shift in the focus point! As a result, this makes critical focus on your desired focus point, a bit of an unnecessarily tedious, laborious process. That said, when you DO nail your focus point, this lens delivers sharpness and detail in spades!! Thanks again!

      I am mostly holding the focus still and moving my body to focus in the view finder, Portrait distances could be a problem but in my own macro experience with manual lenses I don’t worry about focus throw. Just my two cents.

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn Před 2 lety +4

      I set the focus and then move the camera in. It's also how I achieve the closest distance from the tiny subject. Some lenses have a distance "sweet spot" and I've not heard about that with this lens. Did you upgrade to the Z7II? It's much better IF you have an auto-focus lens.

    • @neilfisher

Eu descobrir essa marca esses dias e estou incrivelmente estimulado a comprar uma lente dessa em vez de uma Canon 100. Acha que estarei fazendo uma ótima aquisição tendo em vista que meu trabalho será sob luz controlada?

    • @neilfisher
      @neilfisher  Před rokem

      Sim, para o seu caso de uso, eu recomendaria o Laowa 100mm ou o recém-lançado 90mm. Se você estiver fotografando objetos estáticos e puder controlar a iluminação, o foco automático e a estabilização de imagem da Canon 100mm não são muito úteis. Além disso, as lentes Laowa 100mm e 90mm são visivelmente mais nítidas que a Canon. Espero que isto ajude 👍👍👍

      Yes, for your use case, I would recommend the Laowa 100mm or the recently released 90mm. If you are photographing static objects and are able to control the lighting, the autofocus and image stabilization of the Canon 100mm are not overly useful. Additionally, the Laowa 100mm and 90mm lenses are visibly sharper than the Canon. Hope this helps 👍👍👍

    Hey, great review. I'm wondering though, isn't the working distance of the lens a bit too short for larger reptiles or amphibians? I'm looking to get into macro photography and I'd love to shoot things like lizards and snakes but also be able to photograph arthropods on a bad herping day. Is this lens flexible enough for that or should I look into something else?

    • @neilfisher
      @neilfisher  Před rokem +1

      @user-jg1yh6by8m you're correct. The working/minimum focusing distance of a 100mm macro lens is quite short if you're primarily photographing larger reptiles or amphibians - especially if said subject is fast-moving and skittish. There are certainly humane solutions to getting a camera and macro lens close enough to skittish subjects that allow for the use of a macro lens, but heaps of patience and planning are required. A possible solution that many dismiss too quickly is a mid-range telephoto lens use with an extension tube. Alternatively, a 180mm or 200mm macro lens will provide a slightly larger working distance.
