It's a really cool video, I just don't know how useful it is since most people don't have access to 15 grand worth of tools to repeat it
So what you didn’t see was version 5 and 6. This can be done with a $10 saw. What I love about woodworkers is their ability to adapt and modify and come up with their own solutions!

Can buy sheets of different veneers at most craft stores and make your own plywood with that. Then it's just simple cut, glue, and sand. Multiple ways to do it, even without the power tools.
I second and third that!! Use your imagination and modify to the tools you do have.

You could use a old bandsaw blade, with the teeth ground off, for a spring. Awesome work. I love the plywood idea.
3 spring ideas: First: A bit of actual spring steel from an old wind-up egg timer or alarm clock. B: A sliver of bamboo, either cut from the actual curve of the tube-shape of the wood and sanded thin, or for long-grain, a thin sliver that you steam-bend (hey, thicker bamboo holds a steam-bent shape in a backscratcher, so should work for a sliver). Three: A bit of clear plastic, cut from the curve of a bottle of hand soap, clear-plastic canister of Twizzlers, bubble-card plastic, etc.

That hose clamp definitely makes it look gnarlier in a rugged, sick way!

I've seen people make springs out of the wood. It seems to work pretty well for them. I cant recall any specific videos or what they were doing, but it works i promise.
I love all of the Walnut recently! So classy, and it really pops against that sweet maple work bench.
I really like the walnut plywood. So many small decorative things could be made from this. The collar spring is brilliant too.
Now that’s something I need! Since I don’t have a CNC, laser cutter or 3D printer your first method is what I’ll use. I’m thinking of using maple for the center piece of the veneer or perhaps use some scraps of the curly maple I gave for the outside and contrasting it by using walnut for the center piece. Maybe, since I have two businesses I’ll use both ideas.
I used to have a metal business card holder similar to this that I used as a wallet for cards only. Can’t wait to have a go at this. Thanks DP
If you can still find those little metallic cricket clickers/noise makers you can use the spring clicker (?). I think we bought a bag at a party supply store for my son's 5th birthday.

I have a long spiral spring from an old clock, very flexible, hardened and thin; I cut pieces of that when I need. Good idea that sticker cards ! Thanks for sharing !
Great project!!! Enjoyed seeing the same project 4 different ways. It made it accessible to all makers... unless they are trolls... now, if only you had 4 pockets for your business cards.
I would steam-form a strip of that plywood to make the spring. Keeps continuity in the build and is less likely to damage the cards.
Love the video. The only addition I would make would be to use some flocking on the spring device to prevent damage to the card and also improve the look when it’s empty...

I'd use a thin strip of spring steel to hold the cards. Just like the ones used for holding parallels against vise jaws on a mill.

The sticker/business cards are such a brilliant idea!
On my micro RC rock crawlers I use retractable key clip springs for my leaf springs. They are tiny and obviously made of spring steel. Would work perfectly in this situation!
Many, many years ago, when every thing was made out of wood (think wooden wheels and wooden teeth), they actually made springs (for pressure like this, not coil springs) out of thin pieces of wood. That way you can continue the wood theme.

I have used a cut off piece of steel banding for a light spring. An inexpensive feeler gauge set will provide different amounts of springiness depending on thickness.

For the spring, maybe bust apart a cheap or broken tape measure, or buy a constant force spring from McMaster if you are doing a bunch.

I made this project with modifications for strips of double sided tape I use frequently at work. The really big hose clamps have large sections of metal without the holes if you are concerned about the aesthetic. So it looks clean like the aluminum but more springy than the aluminum.
Food for thought. When you made the one with the hose clamp, you "could've" put two pieces (Two, to distribute the clamping pressure) of hose clamp inside, one towards each end that way they would not be seen when you gave out your last card. Just a idea...

Great video! Love the hose clamp idea. I was surprised the rake didn't work. The one clip idea sounds like a good one too! everyone has pens that don't need a clip.

Hey, look guys at all the fancy expensive tools I have! Much of what you do can be made with hand tools and a little bit of imagination and skill. You gave me some ideas (thanks) but I'm still struggling with displaying my cards so I know which one to pick (I'm looking for a design for credit cards, not business cards). Perhaps a piece of foam runner would act as a spring?
I could give some suggestions but I’m too busy looking at all my fancy tools!
Very nice!! To answer your question how would you make a spring? Use steel banding. I own a sheet metal shop and the sheet come on a large pallet banded with steel strapping. The strapping is coated so it won’t rust great light duty spring material. Keep up the great work. Always inspiring!!!

Use spring steel... easy source is find a place that gets in metal banding straps and tosses them. Typically a tempered spring steel, more than likely free and you can adjust the temper in your oven.

For springs maybe talk to your tattoo artist and see where they get their spring steel? Assuming she or he uses a traditional machine and does the upkeep themselves.

Those business card holders came out great! I recently made a business card holder that has a hinging lid. It was such a fun project and by far my most viewed video. I did recently drop it though and the walnut I used broke in a spot. It's fixable, but I'm probably going to use the plywood idea for my future designs. Nice work!

For the spring clip I was thinking a thin piece of metal, (like your second choice), with a spring at the bottom between it and the back. A little more complicated because of drilling a seat for, and/or just gluing the spring to the back, but the metal would be solid and could be polished to a bright shine.

I would drill a little hole behind the aluminum. And put a little spring in it to make the aluminum act more like a spring.

Could sand/grind down the aluminum strap to make it more flexible. I like the look of the hose clamp though. Rugged like someone else said. Would just need to keep a sacrificial card in the back because im sure it would get chewed up over time. Or maybe put a piece of packing tape over it. Great job on all 4 methods!

Wondering if you cut that take piece shorter on the top and longer on the bottom of that would help the springy issue
If you use mild steel like old hacksaw blades and pein hammer them to harden them they become springy.

sweet build!! When I heard this project on the podcast, I was hoping you were gonna do a hinged one like a cassette case.
If I was to make one, I would have chisseled out a groove for the spring to rest flush in when the card holder is packed full to allow space for a few more cards in the same amount of space.
I would definitely do that next time!
