Lyrics:
You always wanted a lover
I only wanted a job
I’ve always worked for my living
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
I come here looking for money
(Got to have it)
and end up leaving with love
Now you’ve left me with nothing
(Can’t take it)
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
I bought you drinks, I brought you flowers
I read your books and talked for hours
Every day so many drinks
such pretty flowers, so tell me
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I…
Since you went away I’ve been hanging around
I’ve been wondering why I’m feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
but I don’t know how I’m gonna get through
How I’m gonna get through
You always wanted me to be something I wasn’t
You always wanted too much
Now I can do what I want to forever
How’m I gonna get through?
How’m I gonna get through?
At night, the people come and go
They talk too fast and walk too slow
Chasing time from hour to hour
I pour the drinks and crush the flowers
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I done to deserve this?
What have I, what have I, what have I...
Since you went away I’ve been hanging around
I’ve been wondering why I’m feeling down
You went away, it should make me feel better
but I don’t know how I’m gonna get through
How I’m gonna get through
We don’t have to fall apart, we don’t have to fight
We don’t need to go to hell and back every night
We could make a deal
What have I done to deserve this?

Hola
Dusty aka Mary O‘Brien was an absolute powerhouse of a vocalist. The collaboration with PSB was absolutely fantastic.
It's 2024. If you're still listening to this you're a legend.👍💯
That is a very low bar

It drives me nuts when people dare to refer to Pet Shop Boys as "one hit wonders." These guys are STILL GOING! Their body of work is impressive.
So true! 👍
They are one of the reasons that made new wave jams exist ❤
They had quite a few good songs.
They had multiple huge hits off their first album ... let alone what came after ... "It's A Sin" is an all timer
I've never, ever heard of the Pet Shop Boys referred to as one hit wonders. Maybe that's an American thing. Here in the UK they're as popular as ever.
When Dusty comes in on this recording, the voice is absolutely stunning.

West End Girls was their biggest hit, but for me, this will always be their best song. And a big part of it was because of Dusty Springfield.
I agree....her voice is so incredible.
Ursprünglich hatten die PSB Tina Turner im Kopf, aber dann wollten sie nicht wegen Tina einen Hit landen, sondern wegen der Musik. Aber ich kann mir auch Tina sehr gut dafür vorstellen.
Originally, the PSB had Tina Turner in mind, but then they didn't want to have a hit because of Tina, but because of the music. But I can also imagine Tina doing it very well.
Dusty 4ever
I agree
Think who went away?
I'm an 80's kid that HATED Pet Shop Boys. Now I'm 41 and I've finally got the point. Phenomenal band.
Never hated them but, found them mediocre at best. DS brought the Scandal soundtrack to new levels. There were many bands better than the PSB at the time.

I remember Dusty Springfield, in a blog, writing about her illness . She suffered from breast cancer. I was very impressed by this. Dusty died in March 1999. Two months after her death, my sister Anneke was diagnosed with breast cancer. A very dark period had begun.... Anneke died in December 2002. Seeing this video makes me feel good. It's good to see a cheerfully singing Dusty.

The great, late, Dusty Springfield in duet with Neil. She adds color and soul to it and soars in the second half of the song. A Collaboration that's a made in Heaven, and the Pet Shop Boys having Dusty Springfield Vocals equals a Epitaph for all us to remember ♥
That was really nice of them to give her career a boost before she left but they have always been a class act in my book.
The 80's had the second British Invasion of music led by the Pet Shop Boys, Duran Duran, ABC, Billy Idol, Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, etc. It was wonderful times especially watching videos on MTV.
True and that was also the last great generation of British acts. After that they've produced a few good ones on and off but never a whole generation like the one that came along in the eighties.
These days Adele passes as the best Britain has to offer, which says it all.
+Pritish Appadoo. The first British Invasion of music was of course led by the Beatles, the Who, the Rolling Stones, in the 1960's. Since the 1980's, there is yet another British Invasion.
+Reva Nelson Remember David Byrne and the Talking Heads? Unfortunately the song that always pops into my head whether I want it or not is "Same As It Ever Was" which is accompanied by David repeatedly banging his head like a crazy person.
+Reva Nelson Ah, the salad days of MTV when they played music videos. Now, it`s overrun by stupid `reality`tripe. Ridiculousness (just as moronic as the show`s name) that catfish nonsense and a whole host of programs that don`t cost a lot to make. Yet another reason to wish for the 80`s to come back.
+lonelyheroine. Agreed and I stopped watching MTV years ago with reality shows.

I was lucky to be born in 84, a year which has been picked by many as the best year for music ever. Nowadays? It’s all absolute rubbish filled with degenerates without any actual talent.
@@LexingtonDeville984 Im in a same boat with you on that thought. Im also made in 1984. Allthough i have to admit i didnt see the greatness of these masterpieces untill i was about 28+. Then again, they say that human brain keeps avolving till 27 or so. Anybody who didnt screw up their brain before that should make a difference between trash and art.
I still prefer 80s music over anything now
Heard this masterpiece since it hits the radio back in the 80s. Timeless!
I wonder to what extent people in the 1980s realised they had been living a golden decade for music. I was just a kid back then, but still I can remember some tunes aired at home from tune or played on TV. 1980s music? Definitely my favorite.
We thought that vibe would never end. 😢
I can't say. It was a decade of a lot of good music. Perhaps we were living at the end of a generation that still prevailed in quality, rhythm and lyrics to be successful. Poetry and Melody was necessary. The biggest question however is, why did this end?
Can't figure out why this sort of great music is no longer mainstream.
Because most so called artists today have too much technology to assist them. There's not much creativity, today. The Super Bowl halftime show was a perfect example.
They were actually pretty popular in the 80's and 90's receiving radio play too.... sadly times have changed my friend.
Good question. For me personally the 80s was the LAST great decade for music. The DIVERSITY was AMAZING back then. For me the music was more creative and the music videos where soooo much better than nowadays.
In 70s and 80s talented guys wanted to make music and they ruled the record companies,; today record companies rule the artists and the results are not natural because if you have good looks, the record company boss says yes you can show your tits and get million views so why need a nice voice, talented musician?
🤔🤔 The music industry is not about the MUSIC like it was decades ago. Music as we know it now has turned into a BEAUTY CONTEST.. All you really need now is looks and a nice body.
There is no doubt that Dustry Springfield helped this song to become the second biggest hit of the Pet Shop Boys. She had great success in the 60's but this was the surprising return of Dusty in ''88. Gotta give this gal some credit! What a talent.

mark mcgee Agree Mark. She was a supreme talent. At least we still have her gorgeous voice to listen to on CZcams! 😍

Absolutely!! Loved these days!!!! Memories!
The melody is insane.
Best Pet Shop Boys song ever. What did we celebrate, what did we dance in an ideal world, a world that seemed to be ideal for us. Unforgettable times, unforgettable music.
When my mum passed away this was one of the songs that has helped me to keep going.... thank you 🙏 Dusty & Pet shop boys 💝🙏
God bless you and your mum and your wonderful taste in music!! 🙌💖🎶
Dusty Springfield was one of those women ahead of her time. She was a white woman with a bluesy voice. Record companies in the 60s didn't know what to do with her. She recorded Son of a preacher man and it became her bigger hit.
She certainly was ahead of her time!
Am I the only one who halfway through the song is already ready to replay it again? This is Broadway level perfection. PSB and the late great Dusty Springfield together is everything.
А мне в этом клипе больше нравится смотреть на лицо молодого Нила, он похож на восхищенного ребенка в магазине игрушек, среди всех этих девушек в перьях. Очень милый. И Крис, в конце, скосивший глаза на танцовщиц😅😅
Agreed!!😂👌🏼💯
Dusty Springfield is truly missed on earth. She’s a great singer.

Love you Dusty....God took an angel..and a great singer..
And she is singing in heaven's chorus 😇😇😇.
What kind of ridiculous question is that?? It seems you sound like someone who is either a straight up atheist or god-hating agnostic.
Christopher Cotton -- It is an anti-religion comment... Although I am kind of that, I do believe something is there... Read some life after death books...and the people that come back...
Rick Stewart There are some documentaries I have seen about near death experiences. If you hear the stories of these who have been there and done that, it'll make you think about your own life and what will happen to you when you exit this life for eternity.
Christopher Cotton -- I know Chris...if you read the children's stories....they are shocking and pure....
