  • Do the Earth and the Moon have a rocky relationship? On this explainer, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice explore the Moon’s history with the Earth and what we have in store with our orbiting partner. What did the formation of the Moon look like?
We break down how the Moon formed in our early solar system. Was the Moon always as far away from the Earth? Take a journey to the early days of the Earth’s and the Moon’s formation. What did the Moon rise look like? What were early Earth's tides like? We get into the Earth and the Moon’s rocky past and uncertain future. Is the Earth slowing? Was the Moon always tidally locked to the Earth? What does our future with the Moon look like? All that and more on another StarTalk explainer!

@@YoukaiSlayer12 There are actually several movies and shows that share titles/names... SO I doubt the title alone would earn a copyright issue, so long as it was fairly obvious you weren't ripping off the original show... If you look for it (for instance, off the top of my head) there are two "Running Scared" movies, but only one is a detective action-comedy with Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines... I've forgotten what the other was, but by the same title, and nobody sued to my knowledge... you can still go after and get either one without serious issue. ;o)

The naming of the colliding body is one of my favorites. It's truly poetic.
Theia is named after the Greek Titaness (a goddess) of luster and sight, wife of Hyperion (Titan god of Heavenly Light).

Loved the show Dr. Tyson, you two are awesome together!! But, I do have a comment on a point of confusion during the show. First you stated that the moon was possibly formed in a matter of years after the impact of the other planetary body. The you stated that the tidal forces would be thousands of time greater at the closer distance. The question is, would earth even have water on the surface at that time to have an impact of the land masses?? I would think the impact would vaporize all of the liquid water. Not trying to be smart, just wondering. Thanks again for an awesome show!!

Moon formed before Earth had water. The moon formed 100 million years after Earth was formed whereas Earth had water on its surface 600 million years after moon was formed. It took 3.8 billion years for Earth's oceans and moon's gravity to distance moon to where it is now.

Chuck nice was on fire. Dude was en fuego. He was hilarious! Dr. Tyson, the Mars like impact event that skipped off the earth and kept going... trimming away some of earth's fat; I've never heard about this before. Could we do an explainer on this please?
