The SR-71 is not a fighter, it is not an acrobatic plane, it is designed to fly high, fly fast, and be invisible. If you are looking for a plane to do rolls, loops, and other acrobatic maneuvers, this ain't the plane for you.

I think it is a cool plane to own and fly, just so long as people realize it is not an acrobatic plane. The SR-71 is not a fighter plane, nor are bombers for that matter, but people still fly them.
@wayneyadams yeh mate I was just joking. Id never buy this model foe the exact reason you stated. Its heavy, small wings, too small, umx junk servos, can't fly slow, can't take off from grass, only does scale and not aerobatic. Just isn't my style.
man i have to say...i really appreciate your honesty and straightforwardness in this video..i saw the E-Flite commercial for this SR-71 this morning and went straight to the website to try to purchase my first Horizon anything...i am glad you talked me out of it

I love the SR-71 so much, that in 1996 I drove out to Wright-Patterson to see one shortly after they were decommissioned.
But as an RC pilot, I'm not biting on this one...too small and it looks like a wonky flier. A great looking wall hanger though.
Hope to see an F-117 someday too :-) A 65mm twin F-117 or bigger would be sweet!

Good review. I have had all the umx edf's from horizon over the years and they are brittle - I break them with perfect landings and im a decent pilot, the foam and incredibly thin structures dont help - they do fly well with a slighlty underpowered feel. Like you said, great static model. Finally some honesty in this reviews.
Honesty is everything.
Get a roll of Blenderm tape. It's very light and makes amazing for reinforcement in thinner areas.
Agree with the remark about this airframe design not being meant for aerobatic flying. Just like you’d never expect an Extra 300 to fly Mach 2 and carry armament, you wouldn’t expect this type of plane to make tight maneuvers, or 3d type flying. It’s meant to go straight line fast and high.

This things looks awesome, because of course it does it's an SR71. But it looks like HH went out of their way for the fine details like the rear gear. But I think you nailed the whole enchilada when you said "It's all part of the show", that's a very apt description of it.

Why no retractable landing gear for a SR-71 Model!!?? Either way it looks super sleek. How fast is it? I didnt notice any crazy high speed passes like some of their other EDF's..
Yea i think LED's should just be standard on these new rc plane models. It really does help alot and cant cost much at all for 4 or 5 basic LED's..
The gear are super small, but to add it would have added a TON of weight, and this thing is already heavy. As for the LED's - yep.

Hey Brian, I just flew mine with a 6mph crosswind with 4S 50c Smart batteries at sunset. Seem to take off with a little wobble from the crosswinds, but otherwise I liked it. I definitely need to work on the landings, lands fast. Seemed a little under powered.
I don't disagree with your findings. This plane is a real looker, but it's not going to win any awards for being the most high performance model we've ever seen. Still glad I've got this beauty to look at as I walk past ;)

Beautiful plane but every video I've watched it looks a bit unstable and wobbly in flight, combine that with the visibility due to the color and profile I'm certain it would be a crash magnet for me! Hopefully someone at the field will pick one up so that I can see it fly in person! :)
Yep, she can fly a bit wiggly, but that's because we were flying in SOME wind. Calm conditions do help a lot, but with the AS3X and SAFE working very well, it almost won't let you crash it...but you can ACTIVELY crash it ;) Just keep your speed up, and enjoy the absolutely gorgeous silhouette.
Bring her home and display her over a lamp, mounted like a Top Gun plaque - wish they'd include the plaque for mounting this on the wall!

Ended up buying one.. this sparked my interest in balsa. And when u see what them kits cost and add up all the electronics etc and harder build... this just seems very well priced. Odd how some ppl will drop $900 on a foam edf but wont justify the same on a balsa 2m STOL plane.

Brian personally i think id rather spend the same money on the Xfly Su27 twin 50mm plus AR631. I think its more plane, more performance, more agility. A proper rc plane not umx size with horrid chatty servos. This just looks too scale for me. Needs to be a twin 64mm and 50% larger then it would be worth double the price.

This plane is beautiful but looks easy to lose orientation with the solid color.
It flies easy, now that I have a few flights in, but you're spot on...harder to see than some planes. If you fly in the right light, like our hand launch flight (first one in the video), you'll have a good chance of seeing what you want and need to see.
We need one that is dual 80mm fans, 6ft in length, so you can actually see the thing and maintain orientation.

If I lived in Arizona and had half a mile in all directions I'd likely pick one up, but here in the East where on my surrounding farmland I only have on average 10 to 15 acre clear fields I think it would be too stressful to keep challenging fate, thus I will pass on this plane.
I once had a small plane with similar wing that also had to be flown full throttle. It also liked to tip stall in turns. This plane seemed not to have tip stall issues, but it is a bit stressful to full throttle fast moving hard to see darts. Call me an old sissy, but for me easy to fly is my choice even though you have to admit the model is sharp looking.
I live in WV. If you have 15 acres you have room enough to fly about anything

I would LOVE that!!! BUT, another STEALTH that would probably be hard to see.
Wonder why they went with linear servos? Weight savings? Would have been nice to have real servos on a plane this size. Oh well not a deal breaker for me.
Thickness. Strength. If you get a 9 gram servo in there, I bet you could have made a plastic shell whereas the servo body made up the TOP and BOTTOM of the wing...but then maybe a black decal on the top and bottom???
I know a lot of people have issue with these linear servos, and I too have had a few, but they are powerful and small....but they if get hairs, grass, leaves, or anything small in there...they're useless. Wish they'd be sealed up with a removable cover (not glued) for better serviceability.
If you want to make them MORE reliable, set your max throws to 97-98% or less. This will stop the possibility of over-shoot, which can get them stuck at the end of the throws.
@@BrianPhillipsRC I heard that from you on one of you're other vids I set all my umxs to 97% travel a long time ago. I havent had any problems with them yet. They make sense on a tiny umx but this is a good sized bird.

Nonetheless impressively detailed.
Evident in your flight footage, that it is one of those planes that begs to be streamlined to fly on momentum, rather than power....I'd suggest buy fuse with wings & tails for just 55$ total & build it streamlined. Put retracts, internalize control horns like real one, inside fuselage. I bet if sb streamlines it, he'll get 30% more flight time & performance out of it.
It would only be a question of time before I lost orientation with this. Too high risk for my eyes but I can see why people would want one .

I AM HAVING A TERRIBLE TIME with my break in to EDF. I have crashed my f18 4 times already with devastating effects, I have crashed my F16 64MM EDF and it is making me want to quit RC altogether. but I am not, I am thinking to start smaller but with the same airframe (F16) to practice with before trying the the 64mm. I have all the parts I can rebuild. I basically have the elf system and two transmitters and receivers. I like the futaba t6l. I recently learned about CG weights. can you do a demonstration for the 64mm EDF f16. you also mentioned used planes. how can I get a discount on used EDFS so that the crash isn't so heartbreaking???? The SR71 you are holding there would be a graduating present if I get better at def. also are there used NX10's?

Sure, but if you know you're going to be in the hobby for a while, first, this is probabaly not a good "Beginner plane" unless you're getting it as a cool lookin model that CAN fly...and you don't really plan to fly it...BUT if you want a simpler transmitter that would be JUST for this plane, you could for sure get the NX7e, or even the DX6e...but I wouldn't suggest the DX anything for someone who'll be flying for a while, as they are about to lose support. They are about "spent" in their capabilities, and eventually Spektrum will drop their updates and that sort of thing...which is why we say, get the best you can afford if you're "in it for the long haul" - this is always cheaper.
NX10 is not the ONLY way to go, but if you know you're in it for say 5 planes, you won't limit what planes you can get with that choice.
Hope this helps - not just trying to talk you into more spending...but more the OPPOSITE...we don't want you to waste a lot of money on a DX6e, then a DX8e, then a NX7e, then an NX8, then an NX10, then an NX20 - see what I mean ;)
