When I was studying engineering in Montreal, I used to live in an appartement across a jazz bar “Le Grand Café”. Oliver Jones was often playing gigs, I used to chat with him, indeed a great and humble human being. I was bringing my books and was trying to study while listening to Oliver playing: not surprisingly it didn’t work out but still ended with my engineering degree. Two of the greatest Montrealers jazz musicians.
Fell asleep from the age of about fourteen to "We get requests"... for years and years. My cassette player didn't switch off automatically so my dad came in every night at about 2am to switch it off on his way to the loo! 😂
Two great pianists having fun together playing great music. They give life to the music as no others can. Now, both of them are gone. Treasure what you have, for one day it will be gone and all you will have are your memories. Make them wonderful for you and others, too. That is what Oscar & Oliver did and aren't you glad? Bless you who supported this kind of music. . . .SYLVIA! -FL 7/24/2020
@@fdjba53 Yes. I looked him up and as of 2017 he was 86. I'm so happy to know he is still among us, but sad he decided to give up his piano playing (after open heart surgery) and retire. However, I am SO grateful that he recorded his music for you and me. Thanks for letting me know. SYLVIA! 10/15/2020
Ian Smith .....me too. How are you ... and where are you .... I’m in midtown Manhattan and still alive..... this recording is simply divine and keeping me through the night.....Miss Jenny
This Unique musically gifted musical Person moved my heart and soul for 100 or more times of my 83 years of age ! Thank you for having broadcasted this piece of Music ! Was undersigned: Mr. Pim Eijgenstein from Holland = The Netherlands in Europe. With Love to The persons who selected this performance !
Just came across this by chance - beautiful and heartrending. Always been a massive Oscar fan, saw him many times in London but never been moved quite like this.
Technically, due to his condition this may not have been Oscar’s best, it certainly was one of his most moving performances. Can’t help going back to it again and again. Beautiful....
One of the Most Gorgeous Pianist I have known! In his biography, his Dad always gave his kids a song to play for him on his return from his Pullman Porter job. Oscar's sis practiced much; Oscar never practiced. But he always played the piece perfectly in one sitting! He was gifted from birth! 🙏 Thank God for Oscar Peterson! DJ
@@rosalynkaplan8756 Not sure about the story, but Oscar Peterson's interview on Jazz Profile said he practiced "about eighteen hours a day." This was when he was in high school, and he had to do the hard stuff first: Czerny, Hanon, scales, arpeggios, left hand voicings, etc.
Oscar never practiced ?? When he was 9 yo he was already working six hours a day, according to his sister... Oscar was obviously a genius but no genius succeeds by not practicing, the gift is nothing without hard work
Not to take away anything from the great Oscar, but he once had a match: Gene Harris. For those unfamiliar with this genius, think of him as Oscar with dirt under his fingernails! Listen to the Album G.H. Live at Otter Creek. The thrill of my life was playing (in a piano store on Bloor Street, Toronto) on the Bosendorfer they shipped all over N. A. when Peterson was performing. It didn't have that big New York bass of a Steinway, but the upper register was good for five more notes than a Steinway -- it kept drawing my hand up and up. Not at the same level, of course, but reminiscent of Oscar's playing on the album Very Tall with Bags. It was remarkable hearing they affected each other. Bags played twice as many notes as usual, and Peterson play about half his normal quotient. If you are a huger O.P. fan, dig up the CBC series "All About Oscar." Wonderful background information.
Am just a couple of younger than 79. My most favourite player playing my most favourite number. It has been my most favourite tune since 1975. I bought my first record player then and the first vinyl LP was OP's Night Train.
I was there. It was wonderful and you almost didn’t notice OPs left hand. Canada’s gift to jazz. Legends forever. I first saw OP in 1964 in Melbourne and just fell in love with jazz piano. With Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen they were the greatest.
This is obviously Oscar after he had his stroke. To my ears he transcends time...I've been a fan since 1976...and there's no need to stop after 40 years.
Ladies and gentleman, it's a great honour, I have to say that all my life, i've been inspired because (by) that man. One of the pieces that, even though OP wrote it,I tink I've played it more often then himself. Still, I wish I had the money he made with it (laught). Ladies and Gentlemen: Hymn to Freedom.
How great is to see these 2 giants having fun to play. Both were born in Montreal what is interesting is that Oliver Jones took lessons from Oscar's sister. Great video, great crowd, great concert. 10 stars out of five!
Interesting. I saw him at the Village Vanguard while a student at Deerfield Academy in the late fifties, with Jazz at the Philharmonic in Munich in 1962, and solo at Dartmouth College in 1977-8? He talked to the audience a lot and at one point said he said he was often asked "What's the definition of Jazz?" He immediately sat down and ripped of twenty seconds of sweet Georgia Brown, then turned to the audience and said "This my definition of Jazz" If a guy walked out from behind that curtain and put a gun to my head and said 'Play it again EXACTLY is you just did!', I would say shoot, I have no idea what I just played!" Works for me.
O mais alto nível musical possível é esse, desses dois brincando facilmente com algo de complexidade absurda. Só uma palavra pode traduzir esse momento humano: amor. Amor.

It has been my great good fortune to have lived during the same time as these gifted players.

Oscar was my inspiration to pound away at jazz for 40 some odd years and still leave me feeling like a beginner!! Swings like none other!!

Each morning on my daily walk I play this song - deeply moving.🏞
Oscar Peterson is great here as always, but the way he played in his 40s/50s is unmatchable
this right here is what call a master piece.

Heavenly melody played by two master Canadian jazz giants! 🇨🇦
No words to describe our feelings ! Remarkable performance!
Truly a classic performance, unforgettable and unduplicate-able!

Gods of music.

@@DougGortnerPartyWeddingPianist Thanks Doug! Such a nice story.
True. What a legend (Oscar Peterson) and his gracious and brilliant protegé Oliver Jones. The Great Dane Perdersen (Bass) left us too early🌹
Amazing how Oscar can do more with one hand, than most pianists can do with two.
An explosion of harmonies, notes and talent straight from their heart and soul !!!
Well said!
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson!
This is my idol! I love him! And I understand.
Killer! Nothing like it now!
These two giants just blew me away.
Only touching with his right hand for the stroke, we love you Oscar, nobody will ever play like you, a hug from Argentina....
Tears for me too, miss you OP. Erik
Thank U soooohhh muchh !!! 2 greats jazzman but the winner is Peter. Just a right hand uppercut is enougth to kill me.
Olivier is also a big man.

Tout simplement fantastique ! Deux GÉANTS à mes yeux ! Merci !!!!

Paul Kemp it's a syncopated rhythm that adds that wonderful contrast against the beat of song. Oliver does it quite well, I agree.
Oscar's this good After a stroke!?
Indeed, no need to stop being a fan even after 60 years!😃
Yes. My friend went to a Peterson concert in Tokyo and he didn't realise that Oscar played concert only with one hand!
Le Jazz et la musique en général est ma véritable religion
Due autentici fuoriclasse!Superbi
.A very heartwarming and a little bit sad concert, the old master losing his left hand and the pupil continuing his marvelous technique, so great!
Yes, yes.
And he's still Way better than me!
I didn't want to know that.
Darrell Jones don’t know why . . . But your comment gets to me.
I'd like to lose my left hand like that.
Oscar and Oliver pure moment of emotion.
Very emotional moment. Thank you Oscar Peterson, for your eternal music.
A one of a kind
A musical moment not to be forgotten, rest in peace OP and OJ.
If I'm not mistaken Mr. Jones is still with us.
