    Guys, thank you all SO much for all the amazing comments and feedback on the door situation! Some of them I had never even thought of doing (like taking the doors off and leaving them off). I think I'll leave it a little longer to think about it (now that I have so many more options and ideas 😅) but thank you all so much, the feedback means so much to me 💖

    Bless your heart girl you've sanded and painted every square inch of that house

  • @cal7589
    @cal7589 Před 5 lety +92

    I'd restore them, since your house is old you'll find none of the doors or door frames would be straight, and nearly every door will be a different size too. Your doors also look like solid wood which a great for insulating the room, sound barriers. Modern doors aren't made the same; usually they're made from plywood and are hollow. The quality is just not same. You can get trim from hardware stores and wood putty to match the wood Color that can fill in the gaps and cracks. I'd also suggest a wax varnish. It's not messy, smells great and really bring out the natural tone. Either way good luck it's a huge task.

    • @PollyLWorld
      @PollyLWorld Před 5 lety +3

      Second this: solid wood doors are great but it would be expensive to replace. They are great for both insulation (and in case of the front door, security). Sanding them down, aplying a coat of bug killer and patching up cracks is going to make them last a lot longer.

      Great suggestion. If the doors are all the same size, and you don’t need a few of them, you could use the nicest ones for the remaining openings. It will be tons of hard work to fix them, possibly, but I love it when an older home still has original features and character.

    We live in an old Victorian house too that we are in the process of doing up - I feel terrible when you say your progress is slow because we are 2 years in and I feel like we have made less progress than you!! Regarding your doors I would highly recommend hot air stripping the paint off them, sanding them back, filling all the cracks with wood filler and priming and painting them (definitely take them off the hinges!). I know this sounds like hard work but it will be considerably cheaper than dipping them or changing them for new ones and you will be retaining an original feature of the house.
    We were really lucky that our house has most of the original features in it (especially because it was rented out to tenants over the years) but one of the features we don't have are the original doors because they were replaced for fire proof ones at some point - I so wish we had the originals!! In fact, we found 4 old original doors belonging to another house down our road in an alleyway behind our house and we are planning to use those in the downstairs of our house.
    I really think restoring your old doors is the best option for your lovely old house and probably the cheapest option for your bank balance.

      Thank you so much for your advice on the doors! I love the original doors, I would hate to let them go. The hard work is worth it for an old victorian house 💖(as you know, by the sound of it! especially if you're two years in! I hope your progress is going smoothly?) You're so lucky with the original features! And what an amazing find with the doors, that's so lucky! I will definitely keep your advice in mind, thanks so much Amelia

    Hello Hermione, as I live in a 1929 flat and love old houses I would save the doors. What do you mean by "dip"? I would have them professionally striped to the wood in order to repair, retrim and repaint them (not having 10 coats of paint to deal with). New doors in full wood would probably be pricier as wood price is skyrocketing. And as for the entrance door, it's always nice to have a statement colour (inside and out). Nice box that looks like a cupboard in the entry 👍

  • @BeautyBlabber08
    @BeautyBlabber08 Před 5 lety +11

  • @catherines2544
    @catherines2544 Před 5 lety +95

    I would just leave the doors until you can financially replace them. I wouldn't get rid of the doors, especially to the kitchen, as you'd want them to say, contain smells (hence why especially the kitchen!) or if you need to contain pets or close off areas to guests.

    Doors are great for winter because they keep rooms warmer and keep all the heat from escaping up the stairs! Internal doors usually are not very expensive to buy new and hang. Sometimes you can find them second hand but once they’ve been hung and adjusted to a different space it can be hard to re-use them. I say patch them up for now and then once you’ve saved up replace them all!

  • @shey8984
    @shey8984 Před 5 lety +49

    I dont know if youd be open to it since homes in England are different from America, but in my opinion you should just remove the doors to the sitting room and dining room? You can easily fill the holes from the screws and just repaint the moldings and make them nice openings. Itll be 100 times cheaper and make the home feel nice and open. Youve spent so much time and money fixing up both of the rooms so you may as well show them off :) For the kitchen door, if you dont want it to be open then I would just replace the door. That one is awful and i dont think its worth your money to try and save it.
    Maybe consider saving the doors and reusing them for a creative purpose? Youre the queen of DIYs so I know you could find a cute repurpose for them.

    I'm in America and whenever I watch PBS/BBC that shows the insides of homes (modern) I'm always amazed at all the internal doors. I always wonder why. Is it something about heating/cooling or a throw back to times when people had servants and needed privacy from them? Anyway, because of what I'm used to, I would just dispense with all those doors. The only doors in my own home insure privacy... ie: bedrooms, baths and rooms like a laundry room that has an outside back door so the internal door in it blocks the view to the inside of our home when we're not home.. otherwise it, too, stays open. So, yeh, our doors mainly are only to provide privacy but are really only closed when that's needed. The rest of the house is open with arches between rooms. I think I would feel claustrophobic with more doors especially if always closed. I'm reminded right now of watching my fav PBS English comedy with all the door openings and closings to enter, for instance, the home's living room or kitchen areas from the hallways. I do, even in American modern styles, love an open floor plan for the visual space. Doors chop up visually and make areas look small to me. Even converting an old victorian home, I think I would probably update it by having fewer doors.

    See if you can find a Master Carpenter and have them give you a quote for your doors (to replace and repair sections), and get a quote to actually replace the doors. Take it from there. I get a feeling it will be less to replace sections and repair than it will be to actually replace a full door because more than likely, they'll need to also replace the frame around the doors. That'll cost you big time! Your renovations are coming along. Great job!

    Renovated a 1909 house (In New Zealand) a few years back and the doors were the same problem here. We could not get standard new ones to fit the frame, so to fit/match would have to be made to spec, and every door had either a cracked panel or missing detailing. The wreckers had many 1920's on wards profile but we could not find the wider, taller doors of the correct age 2nd hand any where. In the end we sacrificed the 2 external doors for parts and refitted the frames to take an easier to find (period replica) profile. Then we used the good parts of the old external doors to replace missing trim/damaged panels etc, filled the modern fittings holes (they were the totally wrong placement for the profile) and all remaining gaps and cracks and had them varnish dipped. It took a lot of work, especially trying things out before we made the final decisions to just scrap the 2 doors. We spent hours searching with no result. What we ended up doing worked perfectly for us in the end, and had we known it was going to work as well as it did we definitely could saved a lot of time, elbow grease and money. I have no idea if this type of plan would work for you, but what ever you do end up doing will look just as good as all the other results you have got with difficult issues. You guys have done an awesome job with your home and I am really looking forward to seeing the end result. Also my heart sinks for you every time you talk about starting another project that needs sanding first, the struggle is real!

    Hermione, what some owners or investors do for skirting boards in our many Ohio historic homes. is to use a 1" x 4" or 1" x 6" pine or mdf for the bottom of the board, and various pre-milled, pre- finished/painted trim pieces to finish out the top, more decorative part of the skirting. Sometimes s half round trim piece is used at the bottom of the 1"x 4" as a finish piece, so it doesn't look like the skirting is just floating in air. Good luck!

    Keep as many of the doors as you can. That 's beautiful old wood and the height of the doors is going to make them almost impossible to find and replace. Just have your carpenter replace the panels that are cracked after you've had them dipped. They will be beautiful. You've done amazing work on your home. Unless someone has restored a home like yours, it's difficult for anyone to appreciate the amount of detailing that goes into it. Can't wait to see more.

    I would suggest asking your carpenter or contractor if they know of anyone doing renovations where you could take the doors. Sometimes people just get rid of things and contractors will take them to have on hand. For your skirting board, since you’re painting it anyway, just use a cheaper pine at the base and then a cheaper 1 inch moulding about an inch above the pine and paint it all white. It’ll give you an 8-10 inch skirting board look without having to bust your budget.

My thought is that if you're going to be painting the fireplace another coat of black, it could be cool to paint the mirror frame black too to match! I realize going that bold with the frame isn't necessarily what you've done in other rooms already but it could be such a styling moment that really showcases the fireplace and the mirror above it together.

    Although you seem to have more tremendous tasks to work in your house, I can feel your pride whenever you see the results of your hard work. I'm an avid subscriber here! I always wait for your updates 😉😍😘

    You've done a lot and had some work done. It is really looking lovely. I was watching a BBC program the other day, Nick Knowles restoration, and a family replaced the doors in their old Victorian refurb. Your stair spindles look so nice. That is a lot of work. Nice job. Thank you for sharing all of your projects.

    Dip the doors that are repairable. Cover the door inserts with (custom cut) mirrors.
    You've done a huge amount of work and it shows. 👍
    Turn your mirror over the fire place to give it height. It looking great.👍 well done you!

    I don't think your videos are too long at all :-) I could happily watch an hour of this. I got my own house last year and had to start from scratch too. Painting the spindles took hours and hours and hours so I feel your pain, makes all the difference though :-)

  • @sophisticatedmomma7058

    Your home is coming along so nicely, well done! 😍👍

    I LOVE your fireplace !!!! You are doing a wonderful job on this home ! It all will mean so much to you after you are done. I love the cabinet in your entryway. As for your door problem I would remove the ones inside, especially if you don't use them, but I would keep them safely put away if they are original to the house.

    For the skirting boards I'd suggest making your own out of wood trim and plain planks (or mdf board cut into planks wide enough to adjust to the height needed). Make a design and transfer it by aplying the trims to the plank with some wood glue and some skinny nails. And then paint it all. It would be pretty repetitive and heavy DIY, but surely would cost less than having them custom made.
    Also: As someone said, i think that the mantle mirror could be hanged on its longer side and maybe 6 inches above the mantle, as the room can handle the height (and complement the tall windows). On that point too, if you choose a dark blue color for the cabinet, it could be taken too as a statement color for the door and both the mirror and mantle piece as to conect both spaces. (Thinking about a rich deep Prussian Blue or Phthalo Blue).

    I have rented similar Victorian era apartments (with doors originally leading to every room!) and many times the original doors were either taken off (and then just the frame remains, often with a contrasting wood stain finish on the frame for visual interest) or replaced with new French-style doors. Despite being a more modern design, they seem to blend well with the Victorian style and the glass is nice to let the light through. Good luck, I enjoy your series because I currently live in an apartment from a similar era but don't own it. I am both fascinated by all of the hard work that goes into a good restoration, as well as daunted by the prospect of owning something similar (I used to think I wanted to!) now that I am seeing your videos! It's a shame that for decades people have neglected houses of this period, and how lovely that you are really putting in the time and care to try to restore it in such a way that honors its original spirit!

    I would replace the doors. Now that I have grandchildren, I have had to replace some doorknobs that wouldn't lock because they could open the doors... we needed our privacy! You can sell yours to a salvage yard.
    I also might take some of the budget to hire a couple of painters for a day. It would put your renovation much further ahead because these guys are usually very fast at their job.
    I think it is wonderful that you are bringing this wonderful house back to life!!

    Save as many doors as you can (the nice looking ones) and get new one on the really bad ones that way your saving a little bit of money. Also that is a common door style so it shouldn't be too hard to find, hopefully.
    As for the skirting boards those are easy and cheep to find and easy to install yourself. You might have to layer two of them on top of each other or use some old wood with crowning mold on top and just paint them (this is what I did to my house).
    Love your videos!

    You're doing such a thorough job, it's amazing! I don't know if I would have scraped all that paint off with a butterknife, that's a job from hell! Awesome!
    For the point with the doors, I personally don't like it to have such an open layout, if you have workers there or guests or any other people, no matter how close you are, they get to see your whole living space at once. I like my privacy too much for that. Plus the heating would be a nightmare in winter, especially with these high ceilings.
    I liked the advice with replacing some panels with frosted glass, then you have more airiness and light, but get to keep your privacy and heat.
    And honestly, I'd expected all this to take much more time, you're really working your ass off in this house. You're doing great!

    Hi Hermione, could you strip the doors and use wood filler on the cracks? I got rid of my original interior doors of my 1940's house and am so sorry I did it now. If you replace them think about stashing them away just in case. Much love from California ❤

    Re skirting - add normal skirting boards then add a beading to make it nice and high. Then paint over. So much cheaper rather then getting custom made!

    Use wood putty on the doors to file the cracks and sand smooth. Keep the original doors, adds to the charm of the house!

    I would paint the mirror above the fireplace a charcoal black (and would consider painting the fireplace that as well) - would add a lot of depth to the space! I did that in a house we had and everyone commented on how much they liked it (similar to you, we were at uni and it was a cheap fireplace cover and mirror was left by previous owners). Also agree with those saying wait and buy new doors when you have the money.. sometimes you just can't polish a turd haha! x

    About the doors...the ones with cracks I would use wood filler on t he cracks, sand and paint. The others you can just paint. You are doing a fantastic job on all the work around the house.

    I love the old English homes very different to the old type of house we have here in Australia. I would look at some restoration yards for the doors. yes you could take them off , but really I think some time down the track you would regret this. Have the best one dipped and see what happens .Good luck and keep us posted. Thanks for sharing.

    You can save money by using 1x6 boards and have a molding of the required height to get to where you need it. Save your money and don't get the doors dipped look for replacements, whether new or refurbished. The easiest way I've found to paint spindles is to use a rag while wearing rubber gloves.

    We love the mirror and mantel we both think you should leave them both white. We also think you should keep the doors just do a little TLC to them and you did a great job on the staircase spindles
