I'm no expert on winching but I have done a fair bit and I've always found that not snapping the cable is better than snapping it. Hope this helps in the future 👍
Your channel is one of the few of the many that I'm subbed to that I could honestly watch indefinately. Your passion and knowledge really shine through and I don't think there's anything you do that isn't really interesting to watch. There's the big YT recovery titan channels like Diesel Brothers and Matt's Off Road Recovery etc, but they all get boring and very repetitive. You don't ever seem to!
8 ton 18 hundered weight, that was how heavy an unloaded Stalwart, without a crane was as far as I can remember. Close to thirteen tons fully loaded with a full petrol tank. Nice video guys, you are really great problem solvers, keep up the good work. 🤠👍
invest in a 'snatch block' guys and double the winch power. it is slower but by gum do she drag you may start pulling unit to stricken but it is safer, also a winch bag over the cable helps to stay alive as well.😊
Like the man said, the Stolly like the Saladin/Saracen was designed to run with two wheels on each side. Mind you, whether you could get that mid-LHS wheel off and put it on the rear RHS is another matter. There are some You Tube videos of Saladin running on four wheels.
Love watching this channel. I think you should fully restore the stolly and perhaps fit a commercial diesel if you are going to use it as a works wagon.
Hello ChicagoAussie! Larry from Chicago, so neat to see you on this channel! I like your videos on Chicago, I lived here for 62 years and there's always some thing new to learn. You stop making video's, Did you move out side Chgo? What ever the case hope you and your family are well. God Bless! 😃
Hope your up to date with your tetnus jabs with all that rust, I feel that I could get tetnus just by looking at it. Also, on a serious note I believe respect is earnt and often I see you guys as soldiers taking on a challenge when it seems all is lost, I respect you and well done
@@MrHewesI was going to say, snatch block /pulley would have been nice, but the final images just before leaving, there was at least one in place, far too late. So. You guys are expert at so much, you left your expert zone behind and snapped a cable and bent the tailgate. So. There are rigging courses available. And maybe some wood timbers underneath the frame rail ? Real nice HIAB truck. Now you need to acquire the expertise to go with it. Astronaut Gus Grissom had a pet phrase. Maintain an even strain. Applies here I think. You guys had a cup of tea instead. All the best from 1/3 of the way around the world.
As someone who regularly drives our work tipper, I completely sympathise with Mark’s desire to avoid a ticket for dropping rubbish i.e., rusty remnants of a Stalwart cargo deck, onto the public highway😁. Cheers from NZ🇳🇿.
First I blame jack for the tailgate so a slap needed there 😅. Need one of those blocks that double doubled you pull on the winch like crane s have but you did it 😊
Every now and again, one does not think straight. Lifting the Solly with the hiiab was one of those moments. And the tail is bent. Aahh. Well done on finally getting it on the bed.
A very well made production. Good sound and camera work ( no wobel vision ) and the musical interlude was excellent, alonge with your very pithy narration. Fun to watch, many thanks and look forward to the next one. .
Nah mate, looks like a jobbo for myb50 ton Talbert tilt bed and winch! However I have what I stated, you having the knuckle crane and a winch, should have lifted the wheel-less corner while witching on, use all the advantages you can. I love having machinery, I hate doing recoveries...
fancy not removing the tail gate - numpties !! hehe surly, and stop calling me Shirly, if all else fails, use a nice railway sleeper, if you have one in ya back pocket (or an entire tree if felt necessary) stick on the ramp, lift bum onto it and drag baby - all were lucky on the winch cable letting go, not saying nuffink guv like others have suggested, i wondered about swapping mid station on the port side to starboard rear as always, love the content, ya all doing a grand job
well I have realised that you all love a challenge - so defo getting that engine to run! Also, it might be the camera angle, but getting the recovery truck past that telegraph pole so effortlessly - wow!
I have been watching your videos for about six months or so and am subscribed to your channel, i enjoy the way you attack the problems you face when bringing those older machines back to life. I also like the fact that you and your mates work hard ,unlike some of the younger generation that you are a part of. I also understand the lack of PARTS. Try finding parts for a ww2 B-25 bomber. I dont think your weather helps either, it seems to be wet A LOT. Here in Texas not so much. Keep up the good work. Mark
there is a special tool used to half the load on your winch cable. it is called a snatch block it looks very similar to the one you found in 10:18 always here to help... keep it up boys + girls
I think that starting the engine if possible this gives you a saleable unit if possible. Transmission might be more problematic but if wheels jacked clear of ground this could be proved so two saleable parts. The rest could be considered for shelving, spares or sale with the rust given terminal rest! Would this then leave you with one paid working Stolly? At that point amusement or sale for profit are the options.
IF you should have a go at getting it going?! *IF*?! I want to learn new impressive ways to confuse and insult creation itself through hearing what Jack has to say while wrenching on the damn thing :D
Hi Joseph, Well that was a tuff process to get the load this Alvis Stalwart FV620 on the Scania truck. When you’ll manage to get the engine properly running I think I have to recommend you to take the engine out of this Stolly and store the engine. Also all the other usable parts of this Stolly better can be dismantled and stored so you’ve a lot of spare parts for the first one you’ve collected and restore the fist one completely. Keen to learn what you’re intending to do and I look forward to your next vlog plus send you love from the Netherlands
I have probably crossed the river Weser in Germany in that Stalwart. I have probably worked on, and might have flown in, that Jet Provost in your yard.
Spoiler alert. That crane won’t lift anything that’s 7t, theoretically it could lift something very heavy but very small at a very short radius. I’d suggest from appearance alone it may lift an empty 20’ container at close reach (2.2t) from a similar position as the stilly attempt. Looks to be somewhere in region of 20t/m Still a useful bit of kit though. Great job getting it out of there, that was a very sketchy undertaking with a lot of possibilities for harm and danger. I’m a plant mover and have recovered dead and derelicts for a number of years. I know how challenging it can be. Great content as always. Cheers
It's not a hiab!!! Looks like an hmf. Like calling a Dyson a hoover! Looked like a Foden job,you want a 3 axle drawbar trailer for it,last pice of the allrounder! Great vidkeep them coming.
I've a 24"x16" heavy box section frame (dolly) with two heavy duty fixed and two swivelling castor wheels. Unbelievably useful for decades when moving heavy lumps that don't want to move. If you'd something like that under the rear corner on the truck bed the winch would have coped ok BTW buy a lotto ticket after that cable didn't sever anything and maybe consider a framed piece of expanded sheet metal!
Great content as always, I really enjoyed the random cow in the background, you could have roped maybe twenty more of these up, then let them seamlessly towed the truck onto the trailer lads!....easy!😃
I was in the army in the 70's and Stollies always looked good, but they really weren't very good. For various reasons they were not known for reliability, the B81 pack was OK but accessibility was something of an issue, as far as I remember the swim ability was expensive, and handballing a hundred or so full jerry cans off the deck in the pouring rain at 3am on Soltau so the REME could get to a problem was never popular. They weren't good to drive but I understand why people like watching them, even today they still draw crowds. It was a love hate relationship, Happy days.
No I don't think you need to bother starting it. Just let it rust away in the corner of a field. Not!!! Yes of course get it started! Would love to see them both looking mint if possible obviously!
Well done real problem solver, Sad to see another military vehicle just left out in the open when last it was working and in far better condition. Why was it not just covered. Great if you can get it running. Perhaps race both through the pond again.
Take the middle wheel from the good side and install it on the missing rear corner to give you a roller and even a driver when you get the engine started. Military tires are designed to be delated for better traction.
I would like to see it run! Is it possible to remove the center suspension and wheel on the left and transfer it to the right side to move it a round the yard, would like to see that happen if possible. Tank you very much! :-D
Be great to have two stollys up and running on the farm, you could get passenger seats off an old bus and fit them in the back and charge people to go through that muddy pond.
We want more piano! 'We'll gather lilacs in the spring again'', Roses of Picardie, give the chap a full video, forget about rusty tanks and stuff for a while....

i was just thinking the same
I like Marks thinking bash holes in one side to let water in, bash holes in the other side to let water out. But who would have thunk it sunk.
He's lucky he still has a head given how close he was to that cable snapping.
Hi , externally engine looks pretty good for its age , love to see it run, please. Many thanks for the laughs. From Nr Chester
Yeah, looks shiny and mint.
With that much rust, I thought it was an Alfa Romeo.
I still think an Alfa would have more ;)
@@L5GUK I was reliably informed in the 80s that Alfa invented rust and sold it to Fiat
If you sit quietly in an Alfa Romeo you can hear it rusting
Nah mate this passed into Lancia / Opel category
Nah, has to be an older Fiat. Too much scrap metal in the metal.
It's great to see that you now do fence post removal as well.
Love watching this channel. I think you should fully restore the stolly and perhaps fit a commercial diesel if you are going to use it as a works wagon.

When you panned around to the rear tailgate, my heart sank a bit seeing it bent like that

Tonka trucks make perfect vehicle skates, you should invest in a couple.
I think you should contact Hammerite and see if they will sponsor you with their range of rust remedies. Challenge and a half that!
Put the Stolly in a bath of rust remover, and fish the four tyres out later.
I used to drive one. Brilliant to drive cross country and over water.

If you are going to continue with sketchy recoveries you might want to double the winch cable diameter and use a pulley. 😅
Be great to have two stollys up and running on the farm, you could get passenger seats off an old bus and fit them in the back and charge people to go through that muddy pond.
I love the random cow surveying their progress :)
Would taking the middle wheel assembly off the good side and fitting it on the rear of the other side and run it as a 4 wheeler not an option?
Lads! Lads! Plan A failed because you didn’t let the air out of the tyres! Heavy stuff air, it weighed about 40 pounds per square inch.😅😊😅😊
As a school boy in the 60’s My mates and I were treated to free rides in a stolly, part of an Army recruitment event in Leicester.
Get it running, engine & swim gear look in better condition than the first one, once the rust was removed
