In this video we will show you how remove and replace the water pump on Ford Edge first generation 2007-2014 and Lincoln MKX 3.5 3.7 single vvt cam engine. It should also work on Lincoln MKX since they share the same platform and engine. We demonstrated how to remove and replace the water pump on 2009 Ford Edge with the 3.5 engine.

There is a proper way to remove the timing cover so that it doesn't crack. You remove the bolts from the timing cover, and there are 6 threaded holes for 6 of the timing cover bolts that are used to evenly push the cover from the block ( none of these holes are the same ones that you removed the bolts from originally ). There are 2 at the top, 2 at the sides, and 2 at the bottom. I found this info in the Factory Service Manual.

I'm not a mechanic, but have managed to teach myself how to change a water pump, radiator and a few other things. This is definitely a large task, but I've taken apart drones and laptops. The mentality is just making sure everything goes back into its spot. It does give me a little anxiety, but I think I'll be okay. This is a really great guide.

I had to take the phaser bracket for bank one off with the timing cover off and move away from because the cover wouldn’t clear it because of the strut tower.

One thing to help with breaking those timing covers is when you take out the front cover bolts there’s threaded holes around the cover you use some of those threaded holes with some of those bolts and go around evenly one turn at a time to break the seal on the front cover without cracking it

When I seen they cracked their cover, I thought it would be a bear. Thankfully I went to the comments, and laid eyes on the treasure that is your comment. I’m doing one of these today as we speak and it’s a lot of hand wrenching you can’t really get the power tools up in there between the block .
If you remove the upper alternator bolt, it will allow the pulley to get out of the way of the cover when you remove it. And if you just leave the 15 mm bolt on the cover, why you remove it you can slide it out there without having to try to jack the motor up or down to try to get that bolt out And you gotta look for the hidden 8 mm on the timing cover. Don’t forget that one. You don’t have to remove the chain guides upper to remove the water pump. The water pump will slide out underneath it don’t get me wrong. It’s a bitch of a job but it can be done. I got stopped today by valve covered gasket set that was wrong, but I have finished up in the morning no problem.

  • @dapv144

With an item that has the propensity of needing replacement or at the least being problematic, like the water pump, condenser, alternator etc., it would male sense for the sake of the owner and mechanic, both dealership/certified and private, as well as the reputation of the company which already in decline, that the design of the engine bay should be a major consideration when rolling out new models. It's clear that there was little consideration for ease of access by the design engineers in this case. Regardless, excellent video again gentlemen and much thanks for recording and posting your hard work and efforts here.

Just FYI there is a procedure to removing the timing cover and prying on it is not one of them! On the 2013 taurus sho 3.5L GTDI, Install 6 of the engine front cover bolts (finger tight) into the 6 threaded holes in the engine front cover. Tighten the bolts one turn at a time in a crisscross pattern until the engine front cover-to-cylinder block seal is released. Two on the top, two in the middle and two on the bottom of cover. Please do not use pry tools on the front cover.

The upper right primary chain guide upper bolt only has to be loosened to allow the guide to swing away from the cam phaser sprocket for the primary chain to be removed. You can loosen the upper bolt with a ground down 8mm box end wrench. Grind the box end to make it thinner so that it can slide between the bolt head and the phaser sprocket. This way you don’t have to loosen the cam phaser bolt. BTW - ALWAYS replace the cam phaser bolt once it’s loosened or removed because it is a torque to yield bolt. It’s not worth saving a few dollars on a bolt only to suffer catastrophic timing failure on a 12+ hour job.

Not made to be easy serviceable! This was also true in the past, however. I recall being told that there were two recommended ways to change spark plugs on a 70's era Ford. The factory way was to remove the engine. The Chilton's way was to remove front tires, use a cutting torch to make slots in the inner fenders. Replace plugs, then add rubber from an old innertube to shield the engine from wheel spray. Caravan's with the large V-6 were are really bad for the rear plugs. Yes, the design engineer should have to do the job themselves just to find out what trouble they have created.

Hey guys, awesome video. Got it almost all the way done, but I am having a ton of trouble lowering the motor to get the third motor mount bracket bolt in. Any ideas? I have tried it again and again, and the motor keep drifting forward and won't go down as far as it did to get the bolt out. SO close to the end!

Hello there. My linconl mkx 2011 has some splash oil in the water pump ouside area and And in the screw to drain the oil area too around the pump area there was a stickier and dirtier oil.
I don't know if it is showing signs of problems or if they have dirty the area while doing the service. I bought it 3 months ago with 110k any help will be greatly appreciated

Tha car joint that has done my work successfully for twenty years tried to use the old gasket with lots of blue silicon gasket material. Total failure. Their excuse was that it was no longer available. The Ford guy verified that to me. So I called the ###boys who had them! The shop was surprised and soon they sent “Jimmie” ACROSS THE STREET to get two, one for them and one for me for later.

If the water pump is leaking it means it is spilling in to your engine oil
A lot of engines are destroyed because of this.

Question- I just picked up an 07 that doesn't run. Was told the engine is seized. It is not. However, it does have a sticky spot in the rotation. It will turnover about once then comes to a hard stop. I can remove the starter, force the engine past that sticky spot, then it will easily turnover with the starter about 1 revolution and then hard stop. The oil looks new, definitely no water contamination. The engine mount has been removed, I can see the bolts have been messed with. What could cause this? Are these interference motors? Did someone mess up a timing chain install and I am smashing valves?

Wow major tear down for the water pump. How often do these go bad and need replacement? Mine has 74,000 miles and the coolant hasn't been serviced since new. I'm planning on changing the coolant this week with OEM Ford gold 50/50 mix and some prestone water pump lubricant. I hope this will give me another 75,000 miles before any major repairs. I use Motorcraft oil changed at the dealership every 3,000 miles I'm hoping by keeping it maintained I won't have to do any major repairs like this 🤞🙏🚘

I really enjoyed the video and the related timing chain video. It was very thorough and not a "sleep aid". I do have one question, You mentioned that it may be helpful and went as far as a 2014 Ford Taurus. Would this be just as helpful on a 2015 model? My guess is yes it would but before I get into the project I would like confirmation. My biggest concern is accessibility inside the vehicle engine compartment vs removal of the engine.
