- Riding around the world sounds like the adventure of a lifetime, but also, like an unimaginable challenge for most. However, we spoke to Vedangi Kulkarni, whose goal is to not only circumnavigate the globe on a bicycle, but to aslo become the fastest woman to do so.
This isn't her first global ride, though. In 2018, at just 19, Vedangi Kulkarni became the youngest female to cycle around the world. Now, she's back to break the world record as the fastest woman to do it, aiming to complete the journey in under 124 days, cycling 270-300 km daily. What drives her to take on such a daunting challenge, and how does she stay sane while riding solo around the globe?
00:00 Who is Vedangi Kulkarni?
00:49 What does it mean to “ride around the world”?

What bikepacking adventure would you want to go on next? 🚴♂ 🗺 Would you ever want to cycle around the world? 🌍
Electric/solar?
With Russia being what it is right now, I'm not sure how one would go about cycling around the world! I guess that might be an area where her Indian passport actually helps her. I hope you guys send a GCN presenter to accompany her on the first day of her world tour like you did with Mark Beaumont!
@@alexseguin5245 Russophobia is a mental disorder and it's OK to travel to Russia, and to cycle there too.
how can we track her journey ?
Not around the world, but a 10 day bike packing adventure would be good. My max so far was 7 days on an unsupported Tim Woodcock C2C. Sudocreme was my best friend.
What a compelling human being. Thank you GCN for bringing this to us.
That is a great story...And Manon is a great interviewer. I like that she is asking the questions and listening... It seems obvious but not everyone does.
What an inspiration! I also love that she talks about the visa issues. As a fellow Indian national I definitely feel that.
Does it prevent you from wanting to ride? 👀
@@gcn It wouldn't prevent me from riding but it's very annoying especially doing all the paperwork. The amount of documents they ask for, for some of these visas - they might as well put a 24/7 surveillance drone one you lol. And the processing times on some of them 🙄
Manon is showing herself to be the best interviewer of GCN, she obviously has set questions, but the questions where she has listened to what they say and asked the follow up questions we all want to know from their answers, is really good and you just dont get that very often. More often an interviewer is just focusing on the next question
Manon is such an accomplished athlete. To see her in awe speaks volumes about Vedangi. Great job on the interview. Super interesting and inspirational!
I was excited to hear that you were doing this video! I learned about Vedangi Kulkarni when my friend started relying on cycling for transportation, and we casually googled Indian cyclists just to see who was out there that would look like her.
It's cool to learn she's making the trip again! Good luck! I'll be excited to see updates.
Fantastic video, Vedangi’s belief in human kindness despite the challenges she faced, and her general go getter attitude mixed with her passion and practical tips are so inspirational!
Also Manon is an amazing interviewer, she knew exactly when to jump in with questions, and when to let Vedangi speak. It felt like a lovely natural conversation. Brilliant, brilliant video!
Should we check in with Vedangi during this epic ride? 🗺
@@gcn Hell yeah!
@@gcn She was talking about wanting to ride more with others on this trip. What if Manon went out and joined her for one leg of the trip???
Wow two women going for the record at similar times simply amazing!!
Awesome right! 🙌
Incredible video. Vedangi is rocking it. Good for you.
She'll smash it for sure 💥
Just read Jenny Graham’s book, Coffee First Then The World. Great book but brings it home how impossibly hard it is, lack of sleep, sleeping in toilets or standing up, 30 hour dashes to catch flights. Good luck Vedangi, great attitude, and amazing you did it at 19.
It's one hard record! We're sure she'll smash it
I agree! You really only start to understand the magnitude when you have a reference point from someone like Jenny
Lael Wilcox is currently doing the same thing. She just got to Australia the other day from the country of Georgia. Her wife is documenting it all & she has a daily podcast to go along with it. It's interesting to see the privilege Lael has in which countries she can enter(pending she hides her marriage to Rue).
Great cycling related story....more if this kind of thing please!
Much respect for anyone that takes on adventures big or small.
I loved what Vedangi said about picking her route in part based on what she would want to ride, because she needed her curiosity to keep wanting to move forward. And I was touched by her reframing of pushing herself not in terms of self-punishment but actually as a form of self-love. (I’m paraphrasing, hopefully not ruining what she more eloquently stated.) On a separate note, this is another great interview by Manon!
Solid questions with solid answers... stay safe and the world watches with stoke Vedangi!
High stoke indeed! 🙌
She’s a machine, that’s an insane distance
Some Big numbers getting causally thrown about 💪
Super cool interview. Best of luck to her! Thanks GCN!
Great Interview and personality she is. Honest, focused and positive. Thanks a lot and have a amazing and safe ride!
Will you be following along with her adventure?
@@gcn I will!
This is so impressive. Go, girl, go!
Um, Lael Wilcox is currently halfway around the world in her attempt to do it in 110 days.
There’s a few going for it right now. Gonna be fun to follow each
@@jonpoon3896where can we watch the gps dots?
She has a daily podcast and a spot tracker if you want to follow her. Atm she's half way across Australia.
Odd timing. Lael is on it. Is this a sponsorship thing?
Imagine living in a world where multiple people can do the same thing at the same (similar) time. Also imagine that productions with limited staff, money and time can only interview so many people and only when timing works for everyone involved.
A great video - many thanks. An fingers crossed for her trip.
Beautiful interview. 🤩
ughhhh, creepy
I enjoyed the interview. Lots of good questions, answers, and knowledge exchange.
Basking in the charisma of this amazing athlete, her story and approach is truly an inspiration. My sincere best wishes on your journey, Vendangi!
wow ...all you need is a bike , some kit , spares and a lot of self belief ..... respect to her ..
Strong legs will help! 🙌
@@gcn deffo ...
I noticed when you said she had a severe concussion. I have experienced post-concussion-syndrome now for seven months and feel unable to get back on my bike as I'm not sure I could ride with the moderate and sometimes severe and distracting headaches and sense of imbalance that now usually develops during or after physical exercise. I relate to her LEJOG experience, When I reached the north of Shetland I also said to myself 'I don't want to stop. I want to cycle round the world!' Hoping the trip goes even better than expected!
I have PCS as well. What you describe is dysautonomia (exercise intolerance) It's treatable!
This interview is so cool!!!🎉🎉🎉
thanks!
Very good and inspiring video thanks Manon for asking exactly same questions I had.
Truly inspirational!! I liked Vedangi’s commitment and her superb attitude!! Best wishes to her! Thanks to GCN for such an insightful interview
I had a nice time watching this Interview :) Quite a learning :)
great idea for this production. hope you can keep your wandering eye on other cycling news that is not UCI racing. most of us dont watch UCI and ride A LOT!! you folks rock at what you do.
We would love to follow some of the wider cycling community and races 🙌
Good luck Vedangi! You are amazing and I keep fingers crossed for the world record! ❤🚲 Really hope one day we can live in a world where it doesn't matter what passport one has, it's so unfair you have so much trouble with visas...
My friend is riding across the U.S. Props to this young lady. I've seen my friends Facebook posts and it's cool watching his progress. This is awesome she's going around the world.❤❤
Feeling inspired?
Amazing!! “What an inspiration” good luck in your next adventure!!!!
Awesome interviewing Manon, your awesome too👍
Thanks Steven! Glad you enjoyed watching.
Manon
Spirit of Adventure. Wonderful women. Love how she is drawing from herself so very much.
Amazing lady!!!!
All the very best to Vedangi🎉 आमच्या तर्फे वेदांगी ला मनःपूर्वक शुभेच्छा !!
Great interview and interesting topics covered.
This is fabulous, what an amazing young woman 🎉
Such an articulate, intrepid, composed young woman. Would be great to see her on GCN as a guest presenter once she’s back from her round the world adventure
Wishing you a safe journey ❤️
What an inspirational being. And holy shizzle - 18000 miles in 160 days! Good on her and good luck for this one!
This is so relatable, apart from riding across the world bit of course. But the Visa issues, unsupported ride turning into a supported one in India :) or not wanting to disappoint parents being a great motivation to keep going. She was incredibly honest in this interview. Good luck Vedangi.. Khup khup Shubhecha.
Amazing, love the way she talks so positively about trusting people. I got the same message from listening to Sean Conway's book when he did it. What an amazing person 🤩🥰
She's the most positive person I've ever met. Nothing phases Vedangi. Glad you enjoyed watching.
Manon
looking forward to the updates!
Best of luck Vedangi! You are an inspiration for our entire family
This is so cool! Any family adventures planned? 👀
Awesome young lady. Best of luck.
Good luck! Gave a wonderful time.
I echo all the other comments in admiration for what she is doing (and has done!). Super brave. Is there a forthcoming GCN tech video on her equipment?
Stay safe and will be cheering from Australia
Great interview, thanks! I can't find the follow up video with her gear. Is it out yet?
That's interesting as Lael is just in the middle of her attempt to ride around the world in 110 days.
It's going to be a great motivator for both parties 👀
Inspirational story 😮
Feeling inspired? What's next for you then? 🗺
Vedangi is inspiring! Manon is an insightful interviewer that listens to her subject. I hope that GCN will be able to provide updates. Does Vedangi have a website that a person could track? Good luck! People are good! Trust the World! Great story!
You can follow her instagram 🙌
I couldn't find the bike check video on gcn tech, where is it?
Go go go Vedangi buddy ⚡️ wishing for your success 🫡🤗 And huge congratulations 🎊 for the 2018 record and also for the last year Manali to Leh world record. You are an inspiration ✨️ So proud of you. I just recently made a world record of 12 Highest Passes on Manali to Leh and leh to manali route in 20 days and 15 hours and I can totally relate your passion and will power. Go go go , all the best buddy from fellow passionate cyclist from Haryana 🇮🇳
Is there a link available, or will you make one available, to track her progress once she hits the road?
Inspirational, Bon voyage 🚴♀️ 🌎 💪🙏👍✌️
Fantastic interview Manon with such a strong positive young woman. We wish you all the best on this epic trip Vedangi.
Will you be following along?
@@gcn I'd love to but don't know how.
Big respect to this girl! 👍
what an awesome family!
Loved her. She is truly inspiring. Also, she mentioned a few times the issue with passport. It is a shame that in our world mobility is extremely restricted for people coming from poor/developing nations, while folks from the USA and Europe have an open gate to the world.
Wow! What an amazing woman!
I was able to wave Hi to Alex Bauman when he went through my town, hope I can say hi to Vedangi as well.
That was an awesome incite to what she is about to take on, I have always wanted to do something similar,
Do it do it do it!
I'm curious her kit. Like her bike and things like this.
Inspirational is the word.
Proudly brought to you by DPD!
I'm glad there was a differentiation made at the beginning of the video that she's trying to break the WOMEN'S record. She won't come close to the actual record. The title should reflect this as well.
Best of luck to you on your adventure. I would like to know did you speak to the guy from England that road around the world on his unicycle? I watched every thing he did. Again best of luck and have a blast.
I agree! The world is made of good people, you just have to learn to trust them and you will see the good side of it.💯
Nice interview, I wish it’d be longer, and with bike/set up presentation
amen
@gcn 👀
I hope you can feature her bike setup, gear, clothes, electronics, and nutrition strategy.
Good Luck ❤
Best of luck Vedangi Kulkarni, you are double hard, I've spent 3 weeks on the road with a bivi, contemplating going around the world with one, oof ! Anyway, as said, best of luck, will try to keep up with your progress.
If she comes through my place in USA I would be happy to give her some food or at least a nice coffee. The whole bike community here would want to be having a party.
That’s hell of a challenge, can’t find any info on this and her website doesn’t have any info? Lael Wilcox is currently 10,620km in 41 days 😮 and Lael has a history of ultra distance riding at pace so is suited to this sort of challenge. Good luck Vadangi!
124 days 10 hours by Jenny Graham is the current record I think.
Lael isnt self supported so its a different kind or ride
Vedangi is planning to completewith in 110 days...basically challenging Lael.
@@333wheeler 40'000 km?? - you sure?
@@Hubertus-ko6yl 29,657 kilometers
Flat earthers here they go 😂
😂 underrated comment
Challenging Lael Wilcox?
People watch football, I dotwatch these legends! (right now it's Lael Wilcox)
All the best to her! 💪
Oh she went through Finland when she cicumcycled the first time. Cool beans. As in reeeaaallly cold for anyone especially considering where she comes from. Chapeau🎉
This is awesome! 2 world record attempts in one year roughly at the same time! Best of luck!
Is there a full video of this around the world ride?
She's got a fantastic attitude!
I think if you are doing good things, good people will join in to keep you safe and going. Come through Texas! If you are on backroads, the people are actually super friendly.
Wow badasss🤩
i think most people doing that would realize half-way that they would rather like to slow down and enjoy and savor the experiences and moments in their adventure..forget the record. :)
where is the video showing her bike setup? its not on the GCN tech channel
I'm also looking for it cant find it
Ah! A fellow climber (and I don't mean on a bicycle). Good on you!
Great insights.
Lack of entitlment and spades of gratitude really are the secret to enjoying life for sure.
PS: Get a neon yellow lazer helmet. Be safe be seen.
Perhaps you've heard of Lael Wilcox? She is 1/2 on her round the world record attempt. Id like to see you interview her!
Lael Wilcox has been regularly mentioned on the GCN show. She doesn’t live in the UK, though, where GCN is based.
Treat myself to a glass of Shiraz on the night before a rest day and maybe a zero alcohol beer.
Sounds boring but it isn’t as I am strategically fueling the right kind of energy with my training
Such balls! 💪
Will be interesting to see who will set the best time. Lael Wilcox has been riding around the world for two weeks now I guess.
More like over 6 weeks by now.
Love these films, miss them since GCN+ went
fear not, we have GCN+ documentaries as part of our CZcams memberships!
I just biked Oregon and now I’ll do the west coast of America and then the Americas! 🎉❤😂
I am curious about mechanical and weather issues.
So she rode 180km for 160 consecutive days? How is that possible?
For someone riding around the world, she seems remarkably sane!
