I bought them all as they came out but now I have this box set . One of the favorites in my collection! Can’t beat Curly Larry and Moe ! (And Shemp)

    4 Feature films with curly joe that you can buy from mill creek in a 2 vol set on Blu-ray Although it’s missing one movie the Three Stooges in orbit, which you can get separate on Amazon. Also on DVD you can get from 20th Century Fox Snow White and the Three Stooges along with there very first film staring shemp as third stooge not curly soup to nuts 1930 . There mgm shorts can be found on Classic Shorts From The Dream Factory Volume 3 and The Three Stooges: (Double Feature) from Warner Bros Gold Raiders / Meet the Baron . Also from Warner Bros. archives Swing Parade of 1946 . If you want to know more let me know I got almost everything from the three stooges

    It is so awesome that you will be investing time on the Stooges. They have been my favorite comedy team since I was a kid and this set was a long time coming. I just ordered a Laurel and Hardy box set so I can see more of their work. I hope you have a fun time. I forgot to mention that there is one short that was lost and believed to be burned in an MGM vault fire in 1967. "Hello Pop" was a two-color Technicolor 1933 short and a lone copy was found in 2013. It was restored and finally released on Classic Shorts From the Dream Factory: Volume 3.

      I remember the first short I ever saw. I was like 6. They were baking a cake. Recipe said seperate two eggs. Dude picks up two complete in shell eggs. Makes them touch. Then "seperates" them and sets them down neatly still in their shell on either side of a bowl. I thought my stomach was going to rupture I laughed so hard. It was physically painful.

    as a die hard 3 Stooges fan the past 36years (This set really doesn’t need to even exist it’s a re-release of the previous volumes in one big box) the only years you truly need is the Curly & Shemp years after that the act became this parody of itself (The Full Leigh films are also terrible) the cartoon itself is so/so there best cartoon version is when they did guest spots on Scooby Doo) if you are going go down the 3Stooges rabbit hole (The Three Stooges abc movie is actually really interesting but, heartbreaking) it’s usually free on Crackle, there’s also a outstanding 3 Stooges Documentary on dvd (That A&E was involved with) it’s simply awesome a bit rare now.... Just don’t dive into there really life until after you watch the shorts

    I get what your saying though about "If they even come to Blu-Ray" Fortunately Universal did a Complete Collection of Abbott and Costello for the 80th anniversary on Blu-Ray via Shout Factory. It's a hell of a set. Shout Factory also released a Peter Sellers Pink Panther Collection on Blu-Ray that is now out of Print. My Mash Box set has the discs stacked on a spindle too which I guess makes some sense considering there is 11 seasons...

  • @camdencoblentz3245
    @camdencoblentz3245 Před 4 lety

    I recently got my set for under $70, which felt like a solid deal for me as a big Three Stooges fan. I wanted to make sure I got the original set and not the re-release, which apparently stacks ALL the discs on top of each other and doesn't even include the bonus discs. I already had volumes 2 and 4, but I was glad to get the others. There are so many memorable shorts in the Curly era, such as Punch Drunks, Men In Black, Three Little Beers, Disorder In The Court, Dizzy Doctors, Back To The Woods, Playing The Ponies, Three Little Sew And Sews, We Want Our Mummy, You Nazty Spy and it's sort-of sequel I'll Never Heil Again, Cactus Makes Perfect, Three Little Twirps, Micro-Phonies, Three Little Pirates, and so on. The Shemp era isn't as strong, but it still contains some good shorts such as Heavenly Daze, Sing A Song Of Six Pants, All Gummed Up, Three Arabian Nuts, Goof On The Roof, and others. I wasn't as impressed with Joe Besser with the shorts I saw that featured him, but it's been a while since I saw any of those. What's unfortunate is that a lot of the later shorts were full of rehashing and corner cutting, but it's still The Three Stooges at the same time. Another reason I wanted to get this was because I haven't seen all of the shorts with Joe and maybe not even all the ones with Shemp. I'm definitely not fond of the bonus discs being stacked, but I now have an extra 2 disc case for two of the three discs. Well, here's hoping you'll be enjoying a lot from one of my favorite comedic teams of all time.

    The Stooges accrued a lot of injuries during their days in Vaudeville doing their stunts during live audience shows. They had to actually hit each other hard so the sound would carry to the back of the audience. When they did the shorts, they didn't have to because the sound effects were added later, but there were still accidents, some of them pretty severe. In fact, there's a CZcams video cataloguing some of them: ( czcams.com/video/W_qWxfYTH68/video.html ).
    Most of the Stooges died of multiple strokes, with the exception of Shemp, who died of (most likely) a massive heart attack that just dropped him so fast he didn't notice it. So aside from smoking habits or dietary habits that may have exacerbated them, it's possible that these early injuries led to a propensity for erroneous blood clots.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před 4 lety

      It is indeed possible. Hard living, heavy drinking, and smoking can't be discounted, as so many actors of their generation didn't make it past 60.

The unfortunate thing about so many of these old comedy classics is that the shorts and movies themselves are often owned by a bunch of different companies. Even with Abbott and Costello, there are a couple of movies that aren't on the Shout Factory set because they were in the public domain (meaning they couldn't be licensed from Universal). The only thing that will make me not buy/watch something is if in that format which leave it a tiny little box in the middle of the screen. I don't mind full screen, wide screen, but when it tries to be both.... like My Fellow Americans. It's so small on my TV I ended up ripping the film off the DVD and upscaling it myself. I do classic movie reviews, right now I am currently reviewing the universal classic monster movies starting with frankenstein than on the others. I also show off my own short films, fake trailers and commercials, rant videos about whats wrong with todays entertainment, and I am about to start doing pickup videos etc. KEEP GETTING YOUR CINEMA ON!!!.

      Not everything comes to Blu-ray, especially when the expensive and time-consuming restoration of nearly 200 individual shorts are involved. Only ten percent of what was released on DVD has been given the Blu-Ray upgrade. That means 90 percent of all DVD titles are still ONLY on DVD. We vote with our dollars, so I’ve done my part to send a message to Sony that there’s an audience for Three Stooges in 2020. Hopefully others have done and will do the same!

    You said early in you don't have much experience with three stooges. I remember and its something I mentioned in a video I made (not uploaded right now), that you and James both made the same observations that are almost contradictory and its been a cautionary tale for me. You both recommended only buying things you care about. You also have both admitted you know you can never watch everything you own. So as a new collector I'm curious how deep into it were you before you went from buying favorites you knew you loved, to starting to explore outside your comfort zone?

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  Před 4 lety

      That's a great question! I've been a dedicated movie fan for thirty years and I've been a film COLLECTOR for 25 of those. My advice about collecting what you love is geared toward people who are looking for advice on how to get into the hobby, and I see so many people (truly, the majority of the film community on CZcams, it seems) focusing on "look at how many movies I bought" and not "look at how many movies I watched!" The emphasis seems to be on acquiring and buying things, but not on what actors and performers and directors they've discovered and come to love, or even of their growing knowledge and fandom. I even saw a guy on CZcams with quite a bit of views talking about buying huge lots of movies through eBay because "they look good on a shelf." So my message has been "only buy what you care about." Don't worry about quantity, or having an impressive shelf. Buy what you care about, and the impressive collection will come in time.
      HOWEVER. I've owned all the movies I truly love for quite a long time. I've bought my favorites on VHS, on DVD, on Blu-ray, and now even on 4K as they come out in the new best format. Movie fans do eventually reach a point in their fandom where you've seen all the usual suspects that film fans talk about (The Usual Suspects is one of the usual suspects, lol, as is Shawshank Redemption, The Godfather, Goodfellas, and dozens of other flicks that are talked about endlessly). One of the luxuries of living in the time-frame that we live in is that we now have access to more of movie history than any generation of film fan ever before us, and the movies themselves look cleaner and are restored far beyond ever before, as well. So when guys like me get to a point where we've seen so much, we start to dig into movie history. In my few years here on CZcams, I've gone from being a movie fan who had a collection that I wanted to share with people to being, lord help me, sort of a movie dad for a lot of younger movie fans. Because I know so many of the most popular movies like the back of my hand, my interests (and the focus of this channel) is now pop culture from the 1930s all the way through the eighties and nineties, and those are the areas that most other CZcams channels are actually talking the least about. Our niche has emerged as the champion of the deep cut and the forgotten gem.
      So this is a long answer to a very succinct question. I'm in a phase of my movie fandom where I am just having a blast discovering all the darker corners of cinema history, and it's a luxury for me because I get to explore so many movies from the deepest recesses of studio vaults (film noir, Japanese science fiction, westerns that haven't been on disc in a decade) and really explore what's out there. Often, the only way for me to do this is to buy these releases as they come out. It's also become important to me to support the companies releasing these films financially, because it's only through supporting these releases that we can get more. I'm in a stage of exploration where I've moved outside of the mainstream and deep into the largely uncharted catalog (at least by CZcams standards) of movie history. Thousands and thousands of movies, just waiting to be explored and talked about in a new generation!
      But I suppose it's important to make sure that people understand that it's taken me a long time to get here, and I didn't start my movie collection by blind-buying handfuls of movies. I started with what I love, and that's what I continued to do for 15-20 years after that. Now I'm in the area of esoteric and fringe enthusiasms, learning about the people that built Hollywood a hundred years ago and the actors that have been dead for half-a-century. But that's not a good place for young, new movie fans to start. That's a place you come to after many years.
      I hope that clears things up and that I was able to express these points in a way that makes sense. I've actually been trying to tackle this subject in a video for a while, but have struggled with how to do it. This may have helped me do it, so thanks for the question!

      @@CerealAtMidnight Thanks! Yeah I ask because I'm in a unique situation. One of the reasons I'm getting into it beyond frustration with purely digital content and a bit of nostalgia is that I live abroad, hopefully permanently, which forces me to keep my collection a bit more modest so its easier to transport. It can still be pretty sizable by layman standards but I really can't at this point have a room that's just DVDs. I too am always drawn to these dark recesses or getting really into something I haven't been that into before. But every time I think "How cool would it be to own a box set of 100 30s gangster movies!?" Another voice says umm...you don't even own Kill Bill yet and that is your favorite movie of all time. Series are an even harder debate. I love star trek so much I'd take a bullet for it so in my first haul I ordered TOS season 1. I'm super excited about it, and shelf vanity aside its going to look so good next to my Leonard Nimoy autograph (humble brag) but I also know this is a MONSTER of a franchise to tackle with several series spanning up to 7 seasons each and 10 movies that I personally recognize. So now I look at other series too and I'm like yeah I want that... But should I finish collecting star trek first? I'll be done getting all of it in 26 years I'm sure! haha. Thanks for the big answer I love it.

      It was released years ago.
      They started releasing individual seasons one by one in the early 2000's, but the Great Recession halted production for a while.
      Afterwards, the "big black box" came out and any of them made up to 2012 came with two pairs of 3D glasses for several special episodes in season 7.
