Almost an hour long video but interesting enough it felt like 10 minutes! Very educational!
My wife and I caught our first fox Monday, I set the trap and she did the checking, but he’s a nice pretty male and I used this video to learn how to skin him out so she can do a wall hanger with it! This fox was the first animal of any quality that we’ve caught! Just started right before Christmas! Great videos!
Awesome job showing the ears and feet! I got my first coyote last year and tried it and it took me a while to figure it out.
Stu, this video was literally perfect timing for me. I watched it earlier today and per your instructions put up a red fox this afternoon feet on and split ears. Everything went exactly as you instructed except I found fleshing a fox kinda tedious. I took the saddle off but found it very difficult to get of the thin underlying fat off evenly. The pelt was cold too. I’ve watched your complete fur handling series but could you do a video specifically about fleshing again. Could you even get a close up of the fleshing knife to flesh angle so that we could see it in greater detail. I’ve got everything going good except the fleshing. I’d really appreciate a detailed fleshing video.

Dude you made it look so easy I tried my first skinning of Fox that got killed by car and it took me like 3-4 hrs to skin flesh and board with the ears and feet although I don’t have your equipment experience or skills I goterdone couldn’t have done it with out your instructions, Thanks man!

I made your machine for skinning a couple of years ago. To pull tails, especially on coyotes, I use a metal tail stripper when you get the core of the tail exposed. Once I have it around the core I lower the animal to the point where I can put one side of the tail stripper in to one of the clamps. Then I use a pair of vice grips to hold the other side of the stripper. While holding the stripper level I pull the animal up and the tail comes out using the machine. An alternative is to pull the tail by hand rather than using the machine but still having it secured in the clamp. Saves a lot of struggling to get the tail out.

Ive tried egg tanning on a few after scraping and salting
And have tried that Alum and salt brew
I prefer egg tanning but for many at once it be the brew

Thanks for posting this, just tried my first fox a customer at my job shot and gave to me. Everything went good except the tail :( Brok off and then I ripped the skin trying to get the rest out, but think I will try to sew it back.

If you're gonna tan it yourself, you can just salt the whole thing after fleshing, and let it dry fur side in like that. Use a belly wedge, but you don't really need to pin it with salt. Next day, put fresh salt on/in. I have had issues with ears and the cartilage with esp Tubari fur dressers. But this year I had some with Moyles. Hair comes off the ears and around them. It bothers me so much that I am doing customer foxes via salting and in-shop tanning. I lost a trapping customer to Tubari's mess. They are fine if you want hides to make a blanket, or Russian style hats. But the trapper was really pissed about it, and a shame as he is the only trapper I know of near me. Foxes are notorious for fur slippage on the ears. I'm a taxidermist of 26 years, and been trapping 20 years. The other problem is where I am it gets warmer every winter, and I don't have that cold workplace that ears can cure at slower and better ( in my opinion, and I am really missing doing hay sets in snow).

Just wanted to thank you for all the great videos you put together I have a few questions. I do a little fly tying and materials are not cheap, so I try to collect my materials from the hunting I do.The question I have is how do I get the hides I harvest to have a thicker skin more like a Suede Like skin rather than a thin one I get from just using borax to dry it. Rabbit and squirrel in particular. Thanks in advance

My boyfriend and I found a little baby fox who was hit by a car, had a snapped neck. Other than that, the body is in really great condition, although neither of us have EVER done this before

Instead of borax could you set up a horizontal hanging system where the legs will hang down so no skin on skin? I feel that could help as well
That would def help. Just be sure to get the leg skins pushed back down before its too dried.

How do you keep your knife from cutting to deep? I always struggle With cutting down into the muscle. I try to lift the knife but then I’m unable to make a single cut. I always end up cutting about an inch and the blade pops out.
What kind of knives do you have? How much did you want to spend on them?
Is a more expensive knife necessarily a better knife?

So I have a fox in the freezer right now and I just cannot seem to keep the tail on any animal that I have skinned or helped skin, so I was looking for some pointers on repairing a tail on a fox. It just ripped off about half way down
How do you freeze them for storing? Rolled up? Flat & Stacked?

Salt is better for tanning. Borax can mess with your pickle (salt bath, very acidic) pH. Salt also draws out more gunk from the skin. This is a good skill to have! You can get good money if you sell to taxidermists.
Ok bud, heres the challenge making a fur blanket! Ive watched a lot of your stuff. It a fur blanket is something ive seen nobody do with real fur . You got folks doing it with fake fur or faux fur, but no real deal. Im not sure what would be the best to use in that application but i was thinking maybe coon or coyote. Tanned fur blanket.. i was considering trying it with coyote when the prices dip . Sooo whats your thought on that?

How do we put those animals down without blowing a big hole in'em. Even a 22 makes a significant exit. Or is that exit hole acceptable to deal with later.?
