I'm on the fence about buying 18GB RAM vs. 36GB with M3 Pro chip, and even though I have 16GB now (M1), the memory pressure stays yellow. Thanks for this video, Dylan; it's really helpful!
My system is currently a 16gb i7-9700k and RTX3060Ti. My light 4k editing already SIGNIFICANTLY lagging and freezing my primary viewer on davinci resolve to the point I couldn’t preview my edits whatsoever. Upon checking my resource usage it showed minimal load on cpu and gpu however my ram was maxed out. With that being said 16gb is most definitely NOT enough for basic video editing and I highly recommend upgrading. 32gb ddr4 is going for like $60-80 making it extremely affordable atm. I went ahead and got 64gb to future proof the rig a little.
Binging your compelling content as we speak 😂 Thanks for sharing it. New sub. Almost 7 months on, what do you reckon (reckon-mendation) would it be the best RAM for Final Cut for long term use on a M2 MacBook Pro Max with the base 30GPU and 2TB ssd? I mean, future-proofing wise, is it better going with the 64GB or stick to the 32GB ram? Thanks for your time and knowledge 🙏🏼
I hope I get a response before this day gets started. I bought the 14inch MacBookPro M3Max with the following specs! 14 Core CPU, 30 Core GPU, 36GB of unified memory. I believe = max 300GB/‘s memory bandwidth. My question is this.,. I will ONLY use this laptop for editing 1080p and some 4k files (drone footage) maybe some 4k DSLR footage as well with a lot of 3rd party plug in’s for Final Cut Pro X like Titles, Generators, Effects and transitioning etc… should I return this product and upgrade to 64 GB of unified memory with 16 core CPU and 40core GPU? Which by the way would = Max 400GB/s memory bandwidth! OH and does 14” vs 16” make a difference with the same exact specs? Thank you in advance.
Thanks Dylan for so interesting videos. I'm experiencing significant slowdowns with my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015, 3.2 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, 32 Go Ram). It's not so visible in final cut pro (I use proxys). I often have ON1 photo Raw open at the same time for searching and inserting photos into my edits, and this one is hopelessly slow. As I consider replacing my machine, I am scared of making a wrong choice. I saw that Apple had released new Mac mini M2, and I wonder if my need requires to buy the Mac Studio, or if the Mac Mini with 16 GB of Ram would be enough to avoid the problem ? What is your opinion ? Thanks in advance.
Hi Wilchris. I haven't used the new Mac Mini M2 but I did see a headline the other day that said the new Mini outperforms a 2019 Mac Pro! This video may help you make a decision: czcams.com/video/-24_4-pkVwk/video.html.
If you restart your machine whatever your using whether it be laptop or desktop between your tasks will that help ? I have 16 gigs of ram not to bad not to great .
is not the drive, is the low ram memory. I personally use 16gb ram and most of the time I'm on the yellow zone and also red zone some time. so, my conclusion, for video editing I recommend al least 32gb ram. When am I going to renew my Mac, definitely I will chose 64gb ram.
from my experience, no! I'm a video editor and my mistake was to chose 16gb ram and no, is not enough. the editing is choppy with codecs like .mp4 from GoPro, insta360, dii drones or cosmo...is ok of you work with ALL INTRA, ProRes, also .MOV from iPhone...When am I going to renew my Mac, definitely I will choose 64gb ram.
Hi sir, I’m engineering student and got 4 years ahead of me and I want to learn video editing. And the max i can afford is MacBook Air M3 with 8GB ram and 512GB storage. Should i go for it? Kindly reply to this.
This video has really helped me. Thank you so much
You're welcome
Outstanding VIDEO ONCE AGAIN! I needed this refresher!
So glad!

If you can afford 32, get it.

Thanks for the input. I have 16 GB and it works great. However, I have a more modern processor so it depends on your other components.
Really useful. thanks

If you can afford it, 64 but 32 will perform nicely.

I think you'll be fine with what you've got
Mac mini m2 with 16gb of ram and I finally got some beach balls on a very small edit.
I hate the beach balls!
Very helpful
PHew. I'm glad I could help.
Mac mini M1 16gb, always helps to restart daily if you edit or not. At this point I have no choice.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Apple silicon still has hiccups.
Thanks Dylan for so interesting videos.

Yes, that will help from time to time if you got into issues. 16GB of RAM is good.
my m2 8gb is struggling with final cut pro. would a external hard drive help?
Possibly but an m2 shouldn't struggle. How big is your internal HD? Is it full?

Yes more RAM helps but I edit with 16 GB all the time.
So will 16gb of ram handle 5.1k 10 bit footage from my mavic 3 with heavy effects etc?
Depends on your other system settings but it will probably struggle a little bit.

Did you test it out? How did it work?
from my experience, no! I agree. Get as much RAM as you can afford.
Reco ram dations
Haha!

That would work for light video editing.
