  • In this video I am demonstrating how to use a flex nib (I am using the Zebra G nib) to draw the portrait of Father Theologos- whom probably some of you from Romania know from the blog/CZcams channel An Athonite Cell: Joys from Mount Athos. When using any instrument, it is important to be aware of its strengths and weakness and to adapt your approach to drawing accordingly. In this case a flex nib allows for painterly strokes so try to not make your drawing tight and over render. Use pressure to create line variation.
The materials I am using are: Tachikawa nib holder, Zebra G nib, Lefranc Bourgeois ink

0:09 Loosely sketching the figure in pencil (real time)
    4:50 Inking (real time)
8:09 Rendering in ink (time lapse and real time)
10:24 Roll the kneaded eraser over the page to avoid smudging
    10:43 Finishing up

It's not an icon, of course (🙂), but the ease with which you seem to work is becoming iconic, since I've been following you! 👍👍👍

Nice work! the most challenging things for me is to not draw shaky lines. I feel like you're good at doing the parallel lines consistent. Also getting a feel for a much pressure to apply on the nib in relation to how much ink is on it. One thing that might help your tutorials is to have the reference image shown on the side. I've seen other portrait tutorials do that. Perhaps it helps us get a better feel for what stroke technique goes where?

It’s true! Controlling your pressure is something that takes some time and practice, it’s not very difficult. You’re right, it would’ve been more engaging with the photo reference, somehow I didn’t think about it this time. I watched a podcast with Fr. theologos and took a snapshot- I would otherwise normally use either my own reference photos or copyright free ones. I’ll make sure to make more videos with references! 🙌

Yeah, the lobule looks a little too long since I wasn't looking perpendicularly at the page due to the camera hanging there.. It's also the light hitting straight, you can check the reference in the community posts 👍
