BETTER THAN GOLF R? 2022 Audi S3 Review

- 2022 Audi S3 review by The Straight Pipes. The Audi S3 Quattro Technik is putting down 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque from a 2L 4 cylinder turbo. At $62,860 CAD, would you take it over the VW Golf R, BMW M235i Gran Coupe, Cadillac CT4-V, Mercedes-AMG CLA35?

You guys should try out the 2022 rs3 its apparently a beast and torque split rear differential which is basically drift mode.
Ok Audi S3 or Alfa Romeo Giulia Ti Sport?

Just in case Audi doesn’t think your road test sells cars, I ordered an S3 after your review. Of course I’m 78 years old and probably loosing it a little. Thanks for the motivation to play boy street racer.
This is the best thing I’ve ever read
William, you're a bada**. Hope you enjoy your S3 in the best way possible young man!!!
Awesome. Ordered one today
If you're not on social media already, please create an account so we can celebrate you and your purchase. Rip it and send it William!
This car sucks, you will be paying thousands on maintenance and repairs for this car after the warranty expires.
Looks and performance is fine, but quality and reliability is pure junk.
Growing up in Brooklyn NY this was always my attainable dream car. It's small and quick, looks great, easy for parking.

If it had the torque vectoring I would say yes. For that reason, more power in golf r and lower weight I would say golf r is better. Plus you can get golf r in the states with a manual.
I would take the Golf R over this, but not because of the manual, but because of the hatch. When I was looking to upgrade my old Mk7 Golf R, I tested an S3. The drive was great, but the tiny trunk space and back seat were deal breakers.
Yeah I had an S3 hatch and I’d never ever buy the sedan. You lose so much practicality
hatches are the bomb
With the back seats up, the Audi trunk is actually larger than the Golf R I think. I had a MK7 Golf R and now have a 8V RS3. Can actually fit quite a bit in the trunk of the Audi. Can fit my kid's travel stroller with no problem. Back seat I think is the same? I have the same child seat installed in my RS3 that I had with my Golf R, no problems fitting in back seat.

Golf R is an incredible package of qualities. If VW fixes the Infotainment / HVAC controls for model year 2023 it will be unstoppable.
Im still reeling over 5:26 great vid as always! Love this car I would love this as my daily
You guys deserve the subs and the likes, great reviews.
Such a beautiful car. I myself wanted an rs3 but they are so expensive so I settled for a Golf R. Even though Audi is much more good looking I think the golf is overall cheaper, and they are quick!
Thanks Audi for giving us real exhaust tips
I've had mine for a few months. It truly checks all the boxes when it comes to a fun daily driver!
I m literally debating on wat my next is going to be and this vidoe just makes it possible for me to make the best decision
What’s nice about cars that have the power of an s3 is that you can floor it and have fun without getting to straight to jail speeds. You get to enjoy open throttle for longer
I'm right there with you. IMO 300-350 hp is the sweet spot for being able to have fun + not go straight to jail
On the fuel symbol the side the pump handle is on usually shows
where the filler door is.
It does. At least every car I've ever driven has the little arrow next to the fuel gauge.
I mean it's an Audi ... it's on the right
The bigger question is who with a license that drives a modern day car doesn’t know this? Keep them away from me on the road.
Great video guys, thanks!

Dear Audi,

Don’t forget we want a manual transmission to go with that hatch.
Answer: that’s simply the Golf R - Audi is the luxury version of VW
@@nextleveljourney6612 My wife has a Golf. I'd prefer the RS3 in hatch. Driving a A6 now and want a smaller car, but still want the ability to haul stuff. The RS3 sedan is so tiny that that trunk is pointless.
Thanks guys I just ordered my S3 thanks to you guys amazing véhicule a nice sleeper car . 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds is great

the review i was looking for !!
I like the sedan versions but wished the Americas got hatch versions as well - seeing them reminds me of a suped-up Jetta at times. - And it’s still crazy to me how Audi subtly started the large grille trend in North America, so long ago, in the early 2000s.
I have an 2010 A3 hatch I wish it would return
So Hatchback RS3 isn't available for America 😫

That’s some of the best sounding fake in cabin engine sound I’ve heard. Sounds like the RS3 5cyl sounds to me.👌🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I was looking for this comment, I cant unhear it :))
S3's last gen 8V also has the "cabin enhanced engine noise", I also have the resonator delete on mine, best sounding 4 banger along with the WRX STI

The A3/S3/RS3 needed such a redesign from the last generation, and they hit the nail on the head with it. Great car, great review.
Except the new RS3 which was once clean and understated for a super hatch has now become tacked on with colossal amounts of glossy plastic and gaudy creases that puts the current CTR to shame.
@@user-ve9tu5rv6e Exactly! It used to be the ultimate Q-Car, but now with all that shiny black plastic vents on the diffuser, etc it looks real cheapskate and chavvy...

The new rs3 is one of the most disgusting looking car ive ever seen with the shiny plastic fake vents and oversized grilles
That chicken nugget shifter SUCKS
I really prefer the older gen to this new facelift. Same for the golf mk8
Great review guys. I love my 2020 S3 despite the back seat lack of room, and I'd take it over a Golf R any day but that's me. You mentioned the upshift problem a couple of times and previous models, like the 2020, allow you to engage "manual" mode by moving the shifter horizontally, where it will not shift up unless you do it yourself with the paddles or the shifter. Does this 2022 model not have this feature, or did I miss it in the review?
was thinking the same thing. no way Audi would take that away, it defeats the purpose of having paddle shifts. on all Audis with paddle shifters i’m pretty sure it’s the same. If it’s in auto mode, you’re only downshifting to get the extra grunt to overtake and stuff. of course it’ll automatically shift up gear if you’re still in auto-mode.
Yeah they missed this, likely also didn't know the easy way to shift from D to S mode for transmission
Great vid
Subscribed! Your videos are fun!
I looked at the vw golf r before this, I'm looking for something with similar specs at maybe a more affordable price. Also putting maintenance and fuel cost in consideration too
LETS GOOOO IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!
Love the old GI Joe! Great reference!!
It’s unreal they removed the gear stick. I had a 2017 S3. They also got rid of the extremely useful circular vents. You can’t put the screen in the dash which gave the interior a classic clean look. No more flat bottom steering wheel. It feels like a step backwards to me
Have a 2016 S3, the interior just looks weird in this. Did you see the interior door handles ? Gone are the perfectly designed subtly lit from the 8v. Now its a pull tab from a can of cheap tuna.
No more flat bottom wheel is lame affff
you CAN get a flat bottom, but not with the lane keep assist option, as there are sensors in the round wheel.
@@stealthhtm23 Yup, my 2022 has the flat bottom steering wheel
@@HeirKrauser my 23’ has a flat bottom as well 👌
Between the lack of an MMI control wheel, that shifter, the piano black, the worse interior plastics, random fake side rear bumper vents, no red interior option beyond stitching, and god knows what else I’ve forgotten, I’ll be keeping my 2015 S3 and other pre-Dieselgate designed Audis as long as I can.
i love not watching videos for a week and then coming back and yuri has new hair again
Great review and thanks.
Do you mind if you could share where are these winding roads? Thanks in advance.
3:45 Holy overhang.
I've been debating between an S3 (or RS3) vice the Golf R. I really want a manual, but so much of the comfort and usability of the R is getting really bad feedback. My answer for now is to keep my tuned (just over 300 hp) A4 that has a manual and quattro.
Saving a bunch of money too

Such a beautiful design. Wish the 2023 RS3 came to Canada
I would still go with the golf r. Just want that manual honestly.
For a daily driver, I'll take DSG any day. Drove manual for decades, but driving these days is more a chore unless you are specifically out just for fun. Besides, DSG lets you control the gears yourself anyway. Maybe you should go for manual windows too?
Love the reference to me in this video :)

Can’t believe Canada is not allowing the 2022 RS3 to be sold here because of new regulations, good thing I took great care of my TTRS. I guess my TT is stock with me for another 4 years or so😁.
I know Audi is part of the VW group but certain angles reminds me so much of a current Jetta.
@thestraightpipes
If you had a choice between the Audi S3 and RS3 - which would you choose?
Currently, I am the market for a new car and have narrowed my options down to those two options. Unfortunately, none of the local dealerships ever have either of those models in stock and when they do that are immediately sold - so I am unable to test drive either.
I am seeking an executive luxury daily driver with power/kick and extremely smooth shifting. I have no intention of ever drifting but tend to have a lead foot on the highway lol so would like the ability to do high speeds easily.
The 5 cylinder engine on the RS3 sounds so tempting but I wonder if it's too much power.
Any thoughts?
RS3 or TTRS please. That’s all I need. That sweet in-line 5cyl is just glorious
Nice motor but the 2016-2019 face lift model looks a lot better more snug to the ground interior better quality and you get the flat bottomed steering wheel as well as standard 👍
Personally i don’t like the last gens interior. Materials are nicer actually, but the design feels boring. Lots of empty space in the design. And the round ovals are weak. The tech is much better in this one and the design is much more modern.
Truth
100% true, I have the 2018 post facelift S3, and the exterior looks is sleek and aggressive, timeless looking. Love my flat bottom steering wheel and the diamond stitched leather bucket racing seats are so snug and comfortable. The car is a rocket even in stock form, with a simple stage 2tune and downpipes you are near 400 HP and running 12.0 Quarters, sub 4.0 sec 0-60

I got this s3 latelly navarra blue chrome details and amazing rims, power amazing, cornering over 200kmh feels like you are in train.
Also am I the only one who sees the s1 looking fenders? Looks amazing in my opinion.
Also I have previous version A3 tdi, I didnt sell it, interior exterior very much different. But both amazing.
New version back seats have more room but less visibility because of s seats.
This thumbnail looks amazing!
Nice video and as always nice audi
Was debating between this and the Golf R as I was looking to upgrade from a MK 7.5 GTI, went with the S3 because even though the R is more powerful (not by much, but still) and has more sporty options like the torque vectoring and all that, the interior didn’t hold up for the price they are going for. But the real deal breaker was the climate controls. If I’m gonna daily a car I don’t want to have to screw around with menus to change the temperature or fan speed, I just want a few physical buttons, is that really so much to ask?
The golf R interior makes it a non starter. I would probably literally buy one if it wasn't for that. As it is even though this is a downgraded interior in some sense from my A4 I still want one.
How much were you able to go under msrp? Here in Illinois I am able to go 10% under msrp.
@@MySonicDragonI have had the golf r for a month now. Unless you live with it can’t comment about the interior. It’s super easy to learn and works awesome. I’m 50 too and the tech is so much fun once u take about 5 minutes of your life to learn it. Awesome daily. Hatch is great. Always have something need to toss in. S3 trunk was a hard no for me. No heated steering wheel at 58k. A joke. No vented seats. A joke. Less horsepower. Inferior awd system. List goes on.
Appreciated the reference to the GI Joe PSAs.

I almost bought a 2020 S3 with 4,000 miles as my daily. But the interior was SO crammed it felt significantly tighter than my C6 corvette.
no way! my s3 is was less crammed than a c6 we used to own. maybe you didn’t put the seat back or something lolll
This new Audi A3 is the car that I want to own
I can only recommend it as a satisfied A3 hatchback (European) owner since August.
Hey Jacob/Yuri, can you fit your child's seats in the back without having the front seats pushed all the way forward?
Forward facing yes but rear facing no.
5:02 thats all pumped in thru the speakers
Please review the RS3 if you ever get one!
One thing I don’t understand is the packaging on this Audi. The golf R has heated and ventilated seats and heated rear seats. The Audi which is supposedly VW’s luxury brand is not available. Only heated front seats. And also no heated steering wheel in the Audi vs the Golf R. If I am paying 15k more, these features should be on the S3
That's why I've also gone with VW. Get a lot more for the money in this price category.
Valid point!
I’d still take the S3 over the GolfR.This is a GREAT review, you guys nailed this one. I prefer Luxury performance sedans over hot hatches.

One small comment and one bigger one.: You mentioned the strange circular "button" on the console for adjusting the stereo volume. I would note that there is also a nice "rotary wheel" on the steering wheel that adjusts the volume as well. I pretty much ignore the console button and use wheel on the steering wheel. The bigger comment is that I went shopping for a 2024 VW Golf R at years end to replace my 2016 VW Golf R (6-speed manual). I tried several VW dealers in both Northern and Southern California and they were all asking a $15,000 premium for the Golf R over MSRP. One dealer even had a "leftover" 2023 VW Golf R and was asking $15,000 over list for that one as well. Meanwhile, I decided to test drive the Audi S3 at the Audi dealership which was 2 blocks away from the VW dealer with both the 2024 and 2023 model VW Golf R at $15,000 over list. I had test driven a 2016 Audi S3 prior to buying the 2016 Golf R and just liked driving the Golf R more. BUT, the Audi dealer had a fairly loaded 2023 Audi S3 Premium Plus and was willing to talk a deal. I was very impressed after the test drive (much nicer interior and had the adaptive suspension, moonroof, and killer Bang and Olufsen stereo that were not available when I bought the 2016 Golf R. AND, the piped-in exhaust sound was, in my opinion, much better than my Golf R synthetic sound. Bottom line, I got the Audi S3 for $8500 below MSRP which looked much better than paying $62,000 for a Golf R (about a $10,000 savings in the instance). Yes, I no longer have the 6-speed manual, but this sucker is plenty fast and fun to drive, more fun than I remember of the S3 from my 2016 test drive.
Would be really cool if Audi included the graphics within the headlight for all the Audi models.

I'd only get the this over the R because of the physical buttons. I don't know why Audi won't sell the Hatch S3 in America that's the best of both worlds!
Rs3 hatch ftw
If rs3 hatch was in America I’d have sacrificed everything in my life for one already.

Funny. I was just looking to buy an RS3, but also checking out S3 to save some money. In the end I went with RS3
I had a 2017 S3 and it was a terrific car. At that time, the S3 was quicker than the Golf R. Not sure why a VW is quicker than and Audi for 2022. RS3 will solve that problem. I might take the S3 over the R just for the interior. The 10k delta might be worth it. VW offers more for the money including heated steering wheel and cooled seats.
If u can afford it def the s3
Sure it may have been quicker than a manual Golf R but DSG vs DSG the Golf R for Mk7 and Mk7.5 is quicker than the 8V/8V.5 S3. This is because both cars had exact same drivetrain and power figures year to year as well as the fact that the Golf R is actually lighter.
@@slow8r Golf R was lighter by like 10kg, definitely not a difference, if anything I always saw the S3's getting slightly better 1/4 mile and 0-60 times.
