Havn't seen it yet. The main character visually reminds me a little too much of a younger version of Pocahontas and there just isn't anything all that unique about her. I live out in the sticks and just don't get out to see many movies and I'm just not seeing anything that makes me want to do the drive to go see it. Especially when I can wait and it'll be in Walmart inside of six months.

I can't avoid thinking of how good it would have been if they make their 100th film in that style, like Kingdoms hearts but respecting every character OG art style. Like the plot could have been about the main characters traveling to different worlds (movies) to stop the villain or even just to collect different pieces from an article that together make something great.

I would just like to say as someone who was born after Disney’s golden era and has no nostalgic memories to it-this is completely correct. If you ask me they should completely drop the cgi. Hand drawn animation is art-it feel personal and you know that there was effort put in. CGI just feels like..a computer. But mixing them can be definitely done well if it’s done right. This movie had potential but it it didn’t reach it. I sense some corporate decision making here

I honestly loved what we got, but I can definitely see the shortcomings. I honestly love the watercolor style, and appreciated their attempt to combine 2-D and 3-D. But I totally understand where people are coming from. It doesn’t always mesh the way I think they meant it to. One person mentioned that the characters seem to blend into the background instead of standing out. “Klaus” combined the medium as well, because it started with 2-D and added the 3-D for dimension, textures, and lighting. “Paperman” succeeded because it started as 3-D and was traced over with 2-D. “Nimona” took a stylized approach, while still remaining obviously CG. And that one actually involved the same person who did that short film for Disney about a dog with a food theme. Ultimately, I want to see where they go next, but they need to get themselves out of the rut they are in.

According to this person, Disney doesn't even have the equipment for 2D anymore and a lot of that equipment is expensive or just not easily accessible. If I find the video I will put the channel name in the comments. It was a while ago. But it sounds like they couldn't do it even if they wanted to.

  • @odinoco
    @odinoco Před 9 měsíci +6

I haven't seen the movie, nor I intend to, since I have my plate full with catching up to 50 years of another, completely different media that is unrelated to this(Trek), but in any case.
From what I read, from what I see, and from this review, the problem with Wish is that it's Half-measures: the movie, you mentioned Shrek as a better example, and I think Shrek works because it was willing to be audacious with its mockery, satirizing some known tropes of fairy tales while still being commited to play some of them straight.
So if Wish wanted to be a genre throwback or a celebration of Disney's animation, then it should have dedicated itself to embrace the charm of the old Disney movies instead of just constantly referencing them.
The animation itself is a Half-measure too, since instead of actually using 2D animation, it just attempts to evoke the classic animation feel with CGI, which does not work if it's not willing to actually look like classic animation, when Spiderverse did it, every frame of that movie *looked* like something out of a comic book, despite the movie having a 3D look.
I know it's not fair to play the comparison schtick, but if a movie is going to be mostly just a canvas full of references to better content, then I call it fair game.

    The money part.
This is what gets me angry.
People keep saying "oh, but animation is expensive. That's why the cartoon was canceled"
And I get that....but this is Disney. Money is literally not a problem for them. It can't be, not when they own cruise ships, numerous theme parks, and buy out the competition like its a game.
If small teams on the internet can make quality animation using funds generated from donations and merch sales, then there is no excuse for Disney.

The budget for Disney movies is also hugely over-inflated, I know the following example is not one-to-one since animation and live action are different, but the Japanese Godzilla movie was made with less than a tenth of the budget that Wish ostensibly had, and it boasts amazing special effects, so the whole budget discussion is starting to sound to me like an excuse to waste money and pretend to care about movies.

Disney made its brand by taking risks, got rich, and refused to take risks ever since. I would argue the last risk they ever took was the era of Treasure Planet and Atlantis, and while they’re remembered fondly they were seen as box office failures. If Disney wanted to really honor their legacy instead of playing to the nostalgia of Disney Adults, they would have tried something truly new and experimental.

Their last 2D princess movie, The Princess and the Frog, cost $105 million - definitely less than Wish whose budget was like $200 million or so. I do also like 3D animation, at least what it looks like now in good quality productions, but 2D deserves to continue being created. It's such a shame that big studios in the West don't do it anymore save for some TV series and occasional shorts. You are right, as much as I love Disney they have no excuse for that, same as other big studios that definitely have the money. Disney's The Little Mermaid live action remake cost $300 million - they could have easily spent that money on producing 2 or even 3 2D animated movies. Are you just using the term woke without knowing what the word means?

Oh, that's for sure. Nothing's even worth watching, not even this channel, as you can see by the reply.

I don't think about this and say "HOI THIS IZ NO 2D ANIME SO NO WAQ"
Instead, I just sit down, and look at a nice little movie, that makes me happy.
CZcamsrs out there who want to see us stop talking about drama and FINALLY be happy again, copy and paste this comment! I need to spread the word!

That is irrelevant to the conversation. Is the movie bad or good? Does the animation look bad or good? I don't have time to mindlessly watch bad, unfinished looking movies so I want to know if they are bad so I can avoid them and watch a good movie. Bad movies make me angry when I watch them, because I am constantly thinking how much better they could be. If you can watch bad movies and enjoy them that's great! But those of us who can't find Mad's input helpful. A movie review isn't 'drama'. Movies are not human beings. We have every right to criticise them, and you have every right to enjoy it despite that. You do not have the right to tell others not to criticise sub par movies. Movies will never get better if we accept bad ones mindlessly. They will just get worse.

@@1faithchick7 It does say in the description this is a spoiler free video for the movie. To be fair, there's no way of knowing whether a movie is good or bad to you unless you...watch it. Relying on other people to tell you whether something is worth watching kinda means you're not thinking for yourself. Take chances, watch stuff you've never heard of before.
