- In this video, I will show you how to remove and replace the rear wheel bearings and seals on a 2005-2007 Ford Mustang. This is a very easy job if you have the right tools. These tools include a slide hammer and a bearing installer. If your rear end sounds like it is growling or has a constant humming sound, then your wheel bearings need to be replaced.

Best video I've seen to do this repair awesome job...
I appreciate it, thanks for the love!
Simply a gem of a video. You made that look as simple as can be. You got a new subscriber.
I appreciate it! Glad you found it helpful.
thanks a lot, your video helped me a lot for my uncle's mustang! good job, keep on doing your great stuff man =)
I appreciate it! Glad I could help
Awsome video !!! Will be doing it next week thanx
Glad you found it helpful!
Awesome! Much appreciated video.
I'm glad you found it helpful!
Best vid for that job.
I appreciate it! Glad you found it helpful.
well done!
Thank you!
Can a list of bolt sizes and anything else that may be needed or useful be added? I gotta work on my daily driver and would appreciate the info to make sure everything flows smoothly to get my car up and running asap once I get started. Thanks!
I believe I used a 13 and an 18 but there are just 3 sockets that get reused.
Amazing Video! Thank you! Just got a new subscriber 😊… question though: how did you know to replace the bearings. What were the symptoms
There was a humming noise and a slight vibration at speed coming from the rear.
To lubricate the new bearings, simply use the rear end gear oil you will be running in the unit. When the unit is properly filled with fluid, it will be what lubricates the bearings during their lifespan.
It really does not matter what you lube them up with along as you use something, I personally like to use assembly lube because it provides the most protection before the oil gets to it.
@@TheMileHighMechanic Is it ok to use bearing grease?
@@Nitrodan73 I believe that will be fine, all the lube does is provide protection until the gear oil can make it through the axle.
Very nice 👏👏👏
Do you know for the 2013 Mustang 5.0 GT model is the same? Thank you so much
I believe they are the same, but if not they are extremely similar. This video will show you how to do everything you need to do.
Good vid, now I just have to find a hoist. Peace. Thanks.
This can be done on stands, it is just easier to show you how to do it on the lift.
Great video! I habe an oilleak at the rear. Now i know to get the axle shaft out and get to the seal. Not sure if thats the problem. Is there an other seal between the bearing housing and the axle housing itself? Maybe you can help👍
@@Dirtpros There is no other seal on the rear end besides the axle seal, so if there is a leak, it likely coming from there.
i noticed when youre installing the cover back on, the bottom of the Diff had leak marks, is that a common thing?
Dry leaks are very common on every car...as long as it is driven. It is not common for it to drip, dry leaks appear to be wet but they arent.
Do you know what the part number was on the seal that you used? The one I removed looks like the one you installed, but when I try to order them, they don't have the metal lip on them.
The kit I got no longer has the metal lip on the seals, so I don't think that you will be able to find them. The ones without the lip are the same, but are gonna be a little bit more tricky to get into the axle.
Thank you for the quick response!
@@draconicLatte absolutely!
@@TheMileHighMechanicHow would you put the seals without the metal ring on would you know?
@@fgtnlegend3053 find something that is just a hair smaller than the outer diameter and carefully tap it in. I like to use PVC pieces, but you can rent a bearing press kit that should have something that you can use.
Any advice on what to do if the bolt holding the pin in is broken?!?
Broken like snapped or broken like stripped?
@@TheMileHighMechanicI had almost started to strip mine. Trying to avoid where OP is at. Use PB? What is the idea on that little 8mm with the bad angle?
I order to make room for the c clip to come out i had to remove the wheel sensor at the rotor.
Interesting
What was the sound it was making before you diagnosed it
There was a humming noise and a slight vibration at speed in the rear
We’re your rear bearings vibrating? Or why did you replace them?
Slight vibration, but mostly a humming noise coming from the rear.
Super wideo a jak wygląda przy mustangu 2014
@@SylwiaKoszowska dziękuję, nie wiem, czy w 2014 roku proces będzie taki sam
What size socket was the pin retainer for the axle?
I believe it was either an 8mm or a 10mm. Sorry for the uncertainty, I just can't remember.
8mm
Axel bearing seal is stuck on impossibly tight for me unfortunately.
Got to ask, is it fine to use the slide hammer to pull out the bearings and the stuck seal at the same time? At face value, it seems it would be significantly easier to pull out a rusted seal this way.
@@-R.E.D.A.C.T.E.D- Yeah, slide hammer will be a great way to remove it!
@@TheMileHighMechanic thanks for the quick reply! Always worried about doing so since so many people pull their seals out seperately before moving to their bearings. I wonder why that is or if there is some risk im not aware of.
Great video by the way! Got me through most of my struggles!
@@-R.E.D.A.C.T.E.D- It's mainly because you can't get the bearing out until the seal is removed, but I guess slide hammering the seal and bearing at the same time could work🤷
@@TheMileHighMechanic Doesn't hurt to try I guess 👍
@@-R.E.D.A.C.T.E.D- Yep! Good luck
So to get those c-clips out did you just use an angled pick?
I just used 2 smaller screwdrivers to push it off
@@TheMileHighMechanic gotcha thanks about to do this on my 08 gt500 this weekend
@@dominickferris1188 hope everything goes well!
Does the v6 version need the friction modifier aswell
Yes every differential on these cars needs friction modifier
@Mile High Mechanic hey bud my local auto parts store only had the bearing seal without the outer flange what would be different on installation
@@jasonandsummer5109 I highly recommend to replace it with the OEM ones with the flange as they are the ones that came off the car, but in theory they should work the same as long as you have something to pound on the seal inside the axle
@Mile High Mechanic hey one last question I put everything back together went for drive lastnight seen some oil on rims this morning I did put about 2.5 qts plus friction modifier you think it could just be a little over flow coming out of seals?
@@jasonandsummer5109 it is almost impossible to over fill the diff because you fill it up till starts to come out of the drain hole (can't over fill because of this). If there is oil coming out of the axle then the seals are not sealing properly. I recommend taking off the wheel and inspecting the seal to see if is actually making a seal. If not you might want to get different seals.
This is the same for 2012 mustang v6 right? Looks like it
I believe so, if not it is really similar.
@@TheMileHighMechanic thank you for your response. Do you have links to the parts your purchased?
@@0WaIIace This is the link I ordered from, but it appears that they do not make the flanged seals anymore...not a big deal, but they look a little different (www.americanmuscle.com/frpp-rear-bearing-kit-0514.html )
How much gear oil does it take it fill it up ?
4oz of friction modifier and 1.5-2 quarts of gear oil. I would just grab 2 quarts.
@@TheMileHighMechanic thank you man
@@garrycoleman2494 Absolutely! Any time
how many hours for repair?
This took me about 2-3 hours with breaks, but I did wait a day for the rtv to set on the diff cover.
Use a magnet next time makes everything easer
For the diff work? I can see how that could be helpful
@@TheMileHighMechanic yea for the diff lol I didn’t explain
Just curious what that job cost the customer. Thx in advance.
How much in parts? or labor? or both?
@@TheMileHighMechanic Both, thx.
Looks like I'm on my other login, not to confuse, thx. =)
@@3zsleepchannelrelaxingsoot778 overall $520 because I did the tie rods and rear control arm bushings for them aswell. But the parts for the rear end job cost less that $100. It's kinda hard to put a number on the labor since it was for multiple jobs.
@@TheMileHighMechanic Thanks for the info!!
The right side axle is 1 inch longer than the left side is
Good to know!
