- When the Steam Deck is living up to its promises, it's absolutely incredible. Playing GTA 5, God of War, and other modern games on the go is an absolute joy. But those dizzying highs are all too often snapped away by insurmountable compatibility issues and a bummer of a battery.
#IGN #Gaming #SteamDeck - Věda a technologie
Purely talking from the money perspective, although the Switch is $100 cheaper than the cheapest Steam Deck, the games on Steam are far cheaper than any other platform. Within a few month of Steam sales and bundle sales, you'll get way more value from Steam and the Deck than the Switch in no time.
Not to mention you current library already is available. No need to double dip.
The question is, will they all run well on the Steam Deck?
@@SuperAvocadoo most of them, the ones without anticheats,
the game devs do have the option to enable support for linux and very slowly some games are coming up with the support,
the most biggest one imo is apex legends, it works out of the box even on linux distros(just give it a while after hitting the play button to compile vulkan shaders(never skip it))
if apex legends does it successfully, others will follow soon as well.
shout out to the people on protondb for posting their work arounds and suggessions
Free multiplayer too

It wasn't mentioned in the video for obvious reasons but this thing is an absolute dream if you like using emulators. Just look up some other videos and you'll see what its capable of
other people simply have no idea how extremely exciting this is for emulator players lmao, like, close to zero id bet.
Yeah. The Deck is literally capable of running the most amount of games that any handheld ever could. It can emulate everything up to PS2 (and lighter PS3 games), GameCube, WiiU and even Switch.
for emulators you will have way better experience with a handheld with windows installed , like AYA or ONEx
@@gregyance9901 na, just search for it on youtube, deck is killing it.
@@cunt5413 OneXPlayer??? At this point in time it can run FAR more games than the Deck.
A switch is cheaper than the steam deck, until you actually get games. The nintendo e-shop is a complete scam.
And that's not even bringing up how most games actually perform on Switch as well...
Why?
exactly Nintendo's prices are insane but people still will buy its a scam alright they charge full price for something that doesn't even deserve it. Its embarrassing how scummy Nintendo has gotten
@@bubby17 its just bad..
And u can emulate games for free on the deck
To be fair about the battery life... The battery on this thing is better than most gaming laptops these days when running intensive tasks and the fact that its done in such a small package is really impressive
My 3 year old laptop running an RTX card lets double the game time... Most modern laptops get 3 or 4 hours of gaming. If not 5 hours.
@@alaneichelberger3014 Okay, and that is a _laptop_ which means it has much more room for a larger battery and also you said it has an RTX card so it's presumably a pretty damn powerful computer which means tasks that would be more intensive on the Deck would be far less so on the laptop. Despite that, quickly, go ahead and tell me how you could fit a better battery into the Deck while keeping the same form factor, I'm very curious considering the Deck is a very tightly packed machine.
@@alaneichelberger3014 that’s literally cap tho even the asus g14 and 15 which have some of the best battery life only do a couple hours of gaming on the gpu, maybe if ur playing 2d indie games with the igpu turned off lol
@@alaneichelberger3014 Lmao, no shot.
And it costs about the same as my cheapo 2019 laptop, while completely kicking it's butt
I'm happy that the handheld console is taking a step forward with this. Competition only helps. This hopefully motivates Nintendo to push the limits a little more.
Nintendo won't though. Look at their track record. They just stay in their lane.
If you highten Nintendos standards for performance and graphics, we'll never get content. Look at how long they take to give us games that look one generation up from the Gamecube.
They won't. Nintendo will be nintendo. They have a very strong exclusives and fanbase.
They'll still sell us outdated hardware for premium prices. This won't have any effect on nintendo 🤣
A million people said that before, and technically they're still in the Wii days.
Switch might be cheaper, and is still a great option for a lot of people, but when you factor in the game prices the total cost of ownership on the steam deck is likely a lot lower after just half a dozen games
Well, as always, Nintendo systems have the huge advantage of being the only legal way to play Mario, Zelda, and Metroid, among other ips. And they've been smart enough to make systems lately that aren't easily emulated.
@@ralphiecifaretto8961 Yet, people are actually already emulating the switch on the steam deck. Legally as well.
@@ralphiecifaretto8961 every system nintendo has made has been emulated within a few years of release, tf you talking about? even the switch emulators run plenty of games perfectly.
@@aehy801 And Wii, Wii U, 3ds, and Switch emulators most certainly DO NOT give you the same experience as the system.
@@ralphiecifaretto8961 outside of the differences in form factor (allowing for different controllers, no handheld mode etc) that is just untrue
"A lack of Anti-Cheat support on SteamOS" is the wrong way round.
SteamOS supports it. Pressure game developers to allow their software to run on SteamOS. Some have already enabled it, some are working on it and some like Epic with Fortnight have publicly refused to do it.
Unsurprisingly wrt to Epic. Their parent company Tencent invested in a Windows-focused competitor called One-Netbook who make the OneXPlayer, a similar portable PC that starts at 1000 dollars.

This is gonna be a beast for gaming just watch when the community takes it on their hands and makes games run even better on it. This is just the beginning of this little monster. How insane the price of graphics cards and CPUs this little monster just beat it all for $400.
It is extremely pathetic that the community needs to make the games run better
@@johndodo2062 Well thats the beauty of PC gaming we make stuff run better and mod it.
@@OveR1337XD or maybe it's more like compensating for lack luster technology.
Pretty soon you'll also be able to get a Ryzen 6800H laptop pretty soon for around $700-800 that has double the performance of the Steam Deck. If they make a handheld device with those (it'll need like 4x the battery size tho lol) it'll be ridiculous, basically a portable Series X effectively (3.6Tflops but 1/4th the resolution of 4k)
400 dollars ?
They can improve the software aspects with patches and updates so not too bad.
cant improve that pathetic battery life though
@@nickhotaling270 You can fix that with a portable charger. Can't have portable PC and steam games on a switch no matter how long a switch last or it's specs. This is the next step and it's awesome. Don't need to hate on it.
@@nickhotaling270 the switch is a pretty weak device and sacrificed performance for battery life. Still tho the steam deck on lowest settings will pretty much always beat the switch handheld graphics wise
@@_Chad_ThunderCock the switch is pretty awful but this ain't much better. Not for the price of the one that can actually hold more than 1 game
@@nickhotaling270 That's based on how you use the device and at what settings, common sense goes a long way with these devices considering the user base.
Feels like down the line it's going to function much better and be more worth it. It's basically in beta mode now.
Yep,I just hope it become more available
yah, just like steam controller. v.2 was way better 🍊
You're still getting a mid tier computer with a pro controller for $400, so it's already a steal.
yes
From what I've seen from other reviews, playing native SteamOS games is pretty much flawless.
It's not the Steam Deck or SteamOS that's in beta, game publishers need to be convinced to release SteamOS versions of their games instead of relying on Proton backwards compatibility which can never be 100%.

"It'll last a lot longer if all you wanna play is low powered indies, but then the Switch is a smoother experience for less money".
Not really... indies on PC are much more abundant and cheaper (sometimes free!) than on Switch. And the only reason the Switch appears "smoother" is because if a game doesnt work smoothly it wouldn't even be available. In the Deck you can at least play them. You can also use itchio and get literally thousands of more indie games than what you'll ever find in the Switch store. This little thing is a beast when it comes to running indies.
And yet it runs more AAA games than the Switch too.
You can also run indies at 60fps/native resolution/better graphics settings. Switch will be more bulletproof experience for sure, but in terms of power/controls customization Deck is unmatched.
And on PC and the Deck you can use mods, save backups and couch-co-op (remote play together). Achievements and cheaper prices are also nice.
There's a lot of people in the comments praising this guy's review but from my perspective he doesn't know what he's talking about.
It seems as though he reviewed the product as a console. It's not really a console.
@@Cappurnikus it is one though
If its cheaper than gaming laptops it's a masterpiece
Right? This guy keeps comparing it to a switch, while the switch runs games worse than a modern smart phone. All while only having 7 year old games that still cost $60 and never go on sale..
Name me a single console with a bigger library at launch. Even the PS3 with backwards compatibility does touch it. Not to mention emulator use out of the box etc. it’s real impressive console
It'll remain a niche device for PC nerds. If you want to compare it to one of the mainstream consoles, just know that it won't sell anywhere near what the PS3 sold, no matter how big its "launch library" is.
@@Vertignasse82 Its a device for all gamers to get into. And its launch library doesn't account for all the unknown games that work which is most of them which is all of steam, and a lot of their unsupported games work fine to. Not to mention other game launchers like epic or origin etc. and their libraries. Its a gaming pc in your hands without the certain limitations of consoles. We will see how much it has sold once valve announces it. Its reservations alone beat out ps3 numbers
You should be able to buy consoles in store at least. This is just a niche product only being able to be product a couple of millions per year vs 20-25m per year with consoles. Niche with limited availability.
@@MyOwnBeauty21 Valve isn't a manufacturing company and they will not produce those in mass. Doesn't matter how many reservations they have.
@@Vertignasse82 sony isnt a manufacturing company either, neither is microsoft. your argument kind of doesn't make sense.
Battery Life is NOT a problem. Anyone surprised they can kill it in under 2 hours must have never used a gaming laptop before. You can optimize settings for battery life or performance. The middle ground gets you neither not both more often then not.
@Patrick Star Valve can’t really fix that one. PS5 is still really hard to get and GPUs are as rare as unicorns.
If anyone didn't know you can freely play emulated games on the steam deck witch will help boost your game library
Do you need to install windows to run emulators or it can be done in steam os?
@@TheLok0812 SteamOS
Just the best PC/console
@@TheLok0812 its a Linux build you can easily just download the stuff on their by just searching the popular ones like dolphin
@@TheLok0812 Retroarch is on steam with a few popular cores. Otherwise, you just have to go into the linux desktop mode and download linux versions of popular emulators. Most of them are great. With the steam deck having this much popularity and being this "open", versions of emulators will surely be made for steam deck specifically, in time. I'm looking forward to being able to flash batocera on a 512 GB sd card and switching back and forth between steamOS and Batocera.
Dynamic cloud sync might be really tricky to support and it might need intentional support by devs. Because that would basically be the cloud version of Xbox quick resume.
Yeah. Have had a tough time with cloud upload errors with Elden Ring lately.
Yes, sadly even Steam Cloud itself is opt-in based on the developer. Some examples from my library that STILL don't have it in 2022 - Dead Space 1 AND 2, early assassin's creed games, etc.
It would be nice to see a little more of things you're talking about. You mention the fan noise but there's no audio of it. And when you talked about putting it to sleep and resuming it would have been nice to see that. Otherwise solid review, thanks!
Dynamic Cloud Sync is different than regular Cloud Sync because with regular Cloud Sync you have to quit the game for your progress to sync to the cloud. With Dynamic Cloud Sync it happens in the background, so you can hop onto another machine and start the game where you left off without shutting it down on the other machine first.
As someone who is currently on the Vanlife, these handheld consoles are going to be amazing!

Can't wait to see what they're like in 5 years time after they have had The opportunity to take in customer feedback in smooth out any major wrinkles with the system.
from what i'm hearing, switching games to 30fps gives you much more battery life.
Its annoying that this isn't obvious. Especially people coming from a switch where almost every handheld game is 30fps locked and the gpu is underclocked for more battery life.
most likely lower cpu usage when gpu limited.
@@prizmovr8817 No matter how accessible this thing is under the handy menu, this is still a thing that needs to be enabled manually. The user must know (s)he wants that and that it exists. It feels super simple for a PC user, but it won't be all that obvious for some console players.
@@dominik2327 not if the developers decide to optimize it for the steam deck that’s why valve has the verification system to verify which games run well without tweaking. It’s all through the developers but it’s great to see that ppl can have that option too
yeah thats pretty much exactly what he said at 10:30
9/10 because you can emulate switch games on this
Steam Deck is just a first generation product that has problems like most first generation products. The $400 base model with a $60 or less 512 GB microSD card will make it worth it as it makes the GOAT emulation handheld.
It may be the goat but it's still not the best in everywhere due to it not being pocketable.
This, it's kind of impossible to understate the value proposition here. Other comparables are like $800 at CHEAPEST.
people complaining about it NOT being pocketable.. why? a switch isnt pocketable and nobody is complaining. If you want it pocketable you will be playing with way smaller screen and that's just not fun.
@@cozyandyummy Switch is pocketable FYI. The Deck is 100% not pocketable
@@fightnight14 nah dude, nobody puts a switch in their pocket. It's possible but not practical or Comfortable. Anyway who cares, the Steam Deck is so much stronger than the Switch. I'd rather have the extra size with all that extra power.

Fair review given battery life and game compatibility are two major make or breaks for someone considering a device like this. But, for Valve's first attempt, I'd say they delivered on their promises, especially at the entry-level price point of this unit. A second iteration seems inevitable given how much demand it generated. Hopefully by then a lot of these concerns will be addressed and the kinks will be ironed out as adoption continues.
the battery life problem might have to stay since the power is like a ps4 and powering something so powerful takes ALOT of power to keep battery life up. its impressive the battery even is what it is tbh.. at least the compatibility will be worked out 100% most games already do anyway.
Absolutely, that will be happen
Was literally just going to play indie games, emulator stuff and visual novels on this. Basically a vita 2
i'm glad for all the flaws noted. they all seem very possible to upgrade in future generations.
Should've mentioned the magnify feature. If there is text too small to see, there's a button shortcut that allows you to quickly magnify the screen and point the magnifier to the part of the screen you need to read.
It has that feature :)
the thing that was not mentioned is that the games bought on steam will be compatible as the years into the future with pc hardware even if its the steam deck or desktop pc ...while on consoles i.e. the nintendo switch there is a high chance you will have to buy your games over again ...its win win with the steam deck
This doesn't just related to the Steam Deck, but BATTERY and STORAGE technology in general seriously need to catch up and advance to meet our ever increasing mobile needs and demands.
There is only so many compromises and tweaks that can be done until these two things in particular starts to hold a lot of things back.
We can only dream the day where our mobile devices can run full tilt and last for a whole week until a charge is needed and capable of storing several terabytes of our content that will not cost an arm and a leg.
Keep dreaming then
That’s where solid state carbon batteries come in they’re pretty much at the stage of end user now
Physics man, nowhere to run
Yeah, can't wait for Solid State batteries to finally hit the market.
Everyone needs to quit acting like this was supposed to be a fully fledged mobile console and accept that it's a step in the right direction for gaming
Well Valve should stop advertising it as such you absolute goof.
Well it never was gonna be a mobile console. Its a mobile PC. Which is exactly why it will never be as user friendly as a switch. It being a PC means your always gonna have to rely on the consumer to actually adjust their games settings to their hardware. (not saying that is bad either)
it is a fully fledged mobile console though, it just has some early issues
Dynamic cloud sync ONLY works on linux right now, which the documentation does point out. It will not sync between a linux and windows device, only two linux devices. Windows still uses regular cloud saves with linux devices like steam deck.
Okay so it's basically useless then
This is a amazing device

Seth Macy one of the best!
Listen to him on the NVC (ign’s Nintendo podcast) he’s actually really entertaining and funny
Considering the limitied storage in many use cases, one might think it would really help to have skimmed down versions of games for the deck, comparable to the xbox series s ready games.
That's a feature Valve supports. Developers can define a depot specifically for the Deck. But that's extra work for the devs/publishers so I'm not sure how many will utilize that.
I'll wait for the next generation
The fact that this thing could be one's only pc is incredible. USB ports would be an interesting touch if they have space. And a floppy disc slot! lol
You can just hook up a USB dock to get whatever ports your heart desires
So glad my pre-order doesn't get to me until Q3. Gives time to work out at least some of those kinks

All you have to do in order to reach the Steam Input settings for the game you're currently playing is press Right one more time in that menu that says "Resume game, view game details" etc. It's pretty quick to access once you figure that out. A bigger issue is pressing the Back button not behaving as I'd except at all in the Steam UI. It behaves like a web browser and keeps a "history" of where you've been so it goes back there rather than just going "back up the tree", so to speak. Eww.
