I was never on this line but remember the steam trains running down to Princes Pier station, now the container terminal. I was born in 1949 at 49 Lynedoch St, now demolished but it was an ex-railway tenement and looked out on the Lynedoch St Goods yard. The Lynedoch St station was just up the road.
Great. Union st tunnel used to end or begin at princes bowling alley. Walked through it maybe 6 times skidging school, 1969-70. Best was thinking it was a cool place to take a girl, who i never seen since. Made me laugh out loud at memories.
My Dad used to have his Architects office at 29a Union Street which was one building along from where the line went under the road. I can’t remember if trains were still running back then which would have been the 70s. I do remember the bowling alley across the road which eventually became a timber merchants but think it is all demolished now.
The darkie was a rite of passage for any Greenock teenager. I don’t think you can access the Union Street tunnel anymore (double darkie). Amazing to think this runs right through the town, as you’d hardly notice unless you were looking for it specifically.
my friends and I walked into that tunnel at orangefield around 1985 and around ten minutes in turned around, terrified of the darkness and the thought of rats and god knows what else!
Very interesting and well composed video, if not somewhat melancholy. That's just my reaction to see old railway lines out of use. There are some striking types of architecture in the bridges, tunnels and cuttings and i wondered if you found the empty tunnels a bit creepy? I was surprised to see so many of them still accessible and quite a lot of tracks still in situ. Do you have any idea why access steps were installed at the Inverkip road bridge. Seems a bit pointless on an abandoned line. In the current political atmosphere of revisiting abandoned lines I wonder if this line has been considered for reopening. Mind you, since Princes Pier is no longer in use, it would seem a pointless exercise especially with Greenock well served by the current railway system. this is really cool, I take trains every day from Greenock and ive always been so interested in this old line. where did it run from and to?? cant find much else about it !! :)
Where can you access any of this part of the old railway line ?,,,some of this line has been converted to cycle/ walking path and I have been walked it between Bridge of Weir and Greenock but the connection seems to have ended at Lady Octavia park . Part of this line used to pass my home in Port Glasgow and , as a child, I used to wave to passengers who were heading to Princes Pie3 to connect with the boat to Canada, either for holiday or to emigrate.
Just down from Whinhill train station where Cartsburn St & Upper Cartsburn St meet there is a a path that winds round to Kilmacolm road, half way up the path you need to climb a wall (easy enough) and you're on top of the Viaduct and on the old railway line. Sorted!

Very interesting! I walked along the old Leek to Stoke line this afternoon, a lot more rural than this but there was still one tunnel!
Walked from Dellingburn street to Brachelston street when I was a wee boy, pretty sure it was still a live line then. That brings back good memories.

Is it easy enough to get to Lynedoch station from the viaduct? I see at least one bridge between the two and from pics its fenced off?
