  • This week we Go to Gympie!
Gympie is situated 170 km north of Brisbane on the Mary River and less than an hour from the Sunshine Coast. We talk about how this town saved the entire state of Queensland in 1867 and we visit a flower farm saved from the recent floods (in 2022) by the local community.
With land in Gympie being very affordable compared to the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, a lot of people have made the move to Gympie in the last couple of years....the historic Gympie Station is also home to the Mary Valley Rattler steam train.
Gympie has many beautiful old buildings from the Gold Rush days and is definitely worth stopping for a look next time you're driving through on the Bruce Highway.....
    WHERE DID WE GO?
    Petal Head Farm & Florist
    35 Stumm Rd
    Southside QLD 4570
    WHERE DID WE EAT?
    Turmeric 150
    150 Mary St

    Open Tuesday to Saturday

Hi, we're Beth & Paul from Brisbane, Australia and we love to travel!
Paul retired on 28th February 2020 and on the 1st March 2020, we set out on a 6-month adventure around South East Asia. This was a well-planned once-in-a-lifetime travel experience! It was our intention to show you how you can have a great time travelling without spending a fortune.
Our timing wasn't great - with the outbreak of the Covid-19 virus and subsequent global turmoil less than a month into our trip.
Until it is safe to travel internationally again, we turn our focus on travelling around Queensland and sharing everything our beautiful State has to offer!
Our videos are posted weekly 😊 (we aim for Thursdays).

My first experience with Gympie was when I was around 4 years old. My parents decided to take us kids for a drive there. We lived on a pineapple farm west of Woombye then. They'd moved up from Victoria in 1959, the year before I was born. Anyway, someone had told them if ever they see green clouds, run for cover as it means hail storms. Well, we encountered one such storm whilst in Gympie and sheltered under cover. The hail stones were about the size of cricket balls and I can still remember as a 4 year old screaming as the noise of them hitting the shop roofs and the street. I'm 63 now and live in Devonport Tasmania. It amuses me how Tasmanians call sleet hail. I tell them of me first encounter of hail in Gympie.

Thank you, Beth and Paul, for showing us Gympie. Certainly, a lot of History behind it. Queensland has so much to see. I'm so sorry to hear that the floods ruin a lot of businesses. Hope Harriet and i can make it one day. Love you Guys. 🙏🙏🙏 Harriet, Jim and Yuki. Richmond, Va.

Hi Harriet & Jim 🤗 We hope you’ve had a good week and thanks for watching our trip to Gympie. It was great to see things getting back to normal again after the floods earlier this year. It’s a quaint little down with some beautiful old buildings 😊

At the 50 second mark, I see you caught on video the kid that painted all that graffiti . 😄
Donna commented that all of these towns you take us to, have done such a great job of preserving the early architecture and feel of Australia's past. In Canada, far too many towns and cities have flattened beautiful old buildings and substituted bland modern structures,

    • @BethandPaultravel
      @BethandPaultravel  Před rokem +1

Hi David & Donna 😆 ha ha! Queensland has some really pretty old towns and a lot of the older architecture is unique to Queensland because the buildings were built for our subtropical climate. A good example is the ‘Queenslander’ houses that have wrap around balconies and are up from the ground to allow cool breezes to flow under the house….unfortunately, we also lost a lot of beautiful old buildings over the years, but it seems they are treasured more now than ever before which should help to preserve them in the future ❤️

Gympie means Bad which is why it was used for the plant.
The Gympie Gympie means Bad,Bad as a clear warning to everybody about the plant.

Can’t get enough of watching your trips . Exploring many beautiful places I have been curious about or been before but not able to explore as much as would like . So lovely great to know more about Gympie. I usually stop there for breaks when on way to Maryborough but never got to explore it . Next time I think I will try

Beautiful flowers and beautiful story. I recently travelled through Gympie from NSW to FNQ return and as mentioned, I didn't stop, only passed through via the Bruce Hwy. I will be heading that way again and will make a point of stopping this time. I'd love to see you do a visit to Childers one day... you bring the towns so much to life :)

Thanks for this lovely video! Really nice positive story about the flowers and they looked beautiful. It must have been heartbreaking to have lost everything in the floods. The thai food also looked amazing. We'll be sure to visit Gympie! 🥰

Thanks Julie 🤗 Yes, the Thai food is awesome!!! It was sad to see some of the shops are still empty, but we were really happy to see so many have reopened and more people out and about since our last visit there a few months ago. It really is a quaint old Queensland town and well worth a wander 😊

That was lovely 😊💐. Such a lovely story about the young florist. We had a lovely pie lunch there way back. Such a lovely man he was😊. He told us to visit Amamoor as that's where travelled from every day. We never did get there😞. He said that's where all the limes come from. Thanks again 🥰. See you next week. 🥰💐🥰

Hi Carol 😊 We thought it was a great story too...hearing how the Gympie community have supported this great little flower farm ❤️ Especially as so much of the community would have been affected by the floods. Don't worry, you can go to Amamoor on your next visit! Oh and the flowers are still very much alive and look so pretty on our kitchen table 💐
