Chinese Restaurant Prank #4: Shocking JAPANESE People Speaking Fluent Chinese

- The American grad student in Japan is up to pranks again! Today we are shocking Japanese people by speaking fluent Chinese! I met a nice old Japanese woman who said she wanted to learn another language when she heard me and a Chinese woman speaking Chinese. I also had a cultural talk with a restaurant worker from Taiwan and she gave some very wise advice about modesty and humility. Enjoy these sudden language switch "prank" or more like cultural interactions.
I am not just a "white person speaking Chinese" or a "white girl speaking Chinese" I'm silly and I like to joke with people and make friends.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

I didn’t put my finger over the mic this time! Maybe I’m starting get this CZcams stuff after all. Or maybe I’m not, because I see a lot of stuff on You Tube that just doesn’t sit right with me. If you want cultural experiences and real bonds between people, I can show you that. For people that want clickbait content and showy displays this channel isn’t for you. I don’t care if I have to get views the hard way, I’m going to stick to my principles. Do you want to join? -Anming
thats why we're here! You keep doing you! :-)
Keep what you're doing, love your content ❤
Yep that's why I'm here! Keep on keeping on ! 😊🤘
omg the shade to xiaoma
Your great don't get discouraged your'e channel will blow up soon!
Its so beautiful how people open their heart and began to be friendly when the language barrier is broken. It's a mental fear of unknown persons and words.
Exactly! My mom is so chatty, but when she visited China and Japan she got so quiet. Knowing the local language opens a lot of doors to good conversation.
@@OrientalPearl 你媽媽到中國和日本的時候都沒有拍攝嗎?希望下次妳家人來日本或中國的時候妳會拍攝他們 ^_^
Yes
I love your videos. I'm currently learning mandarin. I'm a total beginner. 42 years old mechanic from england. And you inspire me. Thank you.
That Japanese woman was probably 80 and she is ready to study English lol. It's never too late!
Im 44 and just started too. Difficult eh?
@@johnyblitz9774 yes, its difficult, lol. but nothing ventured, nothing gained. Good luck with your new language johny blitz,
@@OrientalPearl Hi, yes you're correct, it's never too late to learn, may take me longer to learn it, but i'll get there. Hardest part for me currently, is "getting away" from my "thick" broad yorkshire accent. And trying to learn all the different tones, that itself is a whole new skill.
Thank you for taking to the time to reply to me. i really appreciate it. Peace. x
Hey try out the website LingQ I have been using it for the past 6 years. I think it's such an amazing website. Good luck on your Chinese!!
This is NOT what I thought I would be spending my time watching, I can't stop! This is wonderful
Me too!
I subconsciously smile at these videos and don’t realize it after looking away from the screen.
Oh same here. All the time. All the time!
Keith Starkey smiles and positive emotions can be contagious so it’s natural I guess :)
Having a nice fulfilling conversation, exchanging ideas and culture, I FEEL CHEATED! I WANTED CLICKBAITY CONTENT
HA HA! There is plenty of that on youtube!
There is always someone who likes to say some shit

I'm so amazed by your language talent and how effortlessly you shift back and forth from Chinese to Japanese. No doubt, you have a very high functioning intellect!!
You are so kind! Learning to switch the languages took a lot of time and effort. I didn't just pick it up, although it might look like that from the videos.
@@OrientalPearl Your mandarin is amazing. Love Jillin province too.
I'll take these engaging insightful conversations over the crazy reactions!
Thank you! Most of the viewers are over 25 years old, so I think they are interested in videos with a little more depth.
I agree with @Ian McCausland. I do enjoy the first reactions of some of the folks, but the discussion with the woman about East vs West cultures at 7:56 was really excellent. I've subbed for more of this type of content. =)
Yeah for sure, talking deep shit with some radon ppl while using diferent idioms is a really good content.
Agreed. I love the human conversations rather than more shallow ones.
I thought she was gonna start speaking fluent Meowinese to the kitty at the beginning of the video LMFAO
out of the select Chinese speakers/polyglots on CZcams, you're my new favorite and the one I'm clueing into the most. Your conversational skills are beyond advanced, and it's more entertaining to hear a thoughtful and personal exchange in lieu of the typical "Oh wow you speak Chinese, where did you learn that, how long have you studied" wash rinse repeat crap you see here. Don't collaborate with anyone just to get more subscribers and attention. You would embarrass them with your superior understanding of the language anyway
I'm so glad you think I stand out from the crowd. That's what I was going for.
I absolutely wanna see a colab so she could crash those polyglots
Exactly
@@TheZenytram 😂😂😂😂😂
@aramdosuzman
I was writing something like this on another video: totally agree.
"We all think we are special" pretty much sums up the attitude for the majority of North and South America! I don't personally think that way, therefore I'm in the minority of thinkers which makes me unique and special! Wait... dammit!!!
You're cracking me up lol
@@OrientalPearl Yay! I made Anming smile! ^_^
What are the main problems with wanting to stand out? Let me know please.
The way you interact with people is so authentic and honestly perfect. It's no wonder you learn languages so well because you have a talent for making friends and engaging people.
Thank you. I'm trying to keep it real over here.
OP needs to win an award for best and most interesting/relevant CZcams'er of the year. Thank God I have the notification on and can watch a new one. You are such an asset to humanity. Well done OP.
Wow! This is the biggest compliment I ever got on CZcams. I'm not sure if I can live up to that standard, but I will try my best! Thanks for your support.
You look like a Russian. What is more amazing, to meet an American, who can speak a foreign language let alone several languages like Japanese and Chinese, this is truly amazing. 👍
Like others said; its nice how people open up when you speak to them.
Wow you are having interesting conversations. This sets you apart from many other youtubers. really nice
That's what I thought. Some people said it was boring. I think they just want a cheap laugh at the expense of the locals.
@@OrientalPearl You see, that's why I've subscribed. You show to the locals respect and honour, while being friendly, inquisitive and honest. Interesting conversations are not boring, especially in another language.
Thank you, keep it up!
I think it’s still surprising for westerners to be fluent in Asian languages, but have been living in East Asia for awhile too and it’s not uncommon that people are fluent in 2-3 Asian languages plus English...just took these immigrants in Japan, became fluent in Japanese and English because of the business purposes, that’s very admirable.
You’re actually pretty cool and I love it whenever you switch so seamlessly to Japanese. I came across your channel randomly and I love it. Consider me subbed. I look forward to your future content
Dynamo7 Welcome to the family! Switching languages took many years to learn to do. You are seeing the product of many years of work.
I started with content that is clickbait but I'm slowly realizing that knowing the languages well also initiates deep conversation with people than just conversation starters. And that's how bonds are formed! Loved this! Keep em coming!😊
Wow it’s a side of these people I have never heard or been privileged to witness as your interactions experience has an warm openness connection that has bridge the barriers between two cultures absolutely fascinating
Me: I want to be unique.
CZcams: Copy so and so.
Also CZcams: Why are you just copying so and so?
Oriental Pearl
Minority: Why are copying so and so?
Majority: We love it...please continue!
Keep going!! Haters are apart of success
You are uniquely amazing in your transactions with others and us... It's hard to find genuine people to watch... Please keep making content.. and you're super cute too.. :)
I loved how instead of gossiping about trivial things that lady started asking deep questions and big stuffs. Quite like me.. if I get the opportunity to speak with a different culture person I'd always want to discuss the similarities and differences between our cultures yet how we're bonded over humanity
I love watching these videos! Not everything has to be loud and exciting. Sometimes, a fun and calm conversation is best! It really helps people like me who are trying to learn the language. I find your videos to be relaxing and entertaining!
I totally agree! It's more like real life.
Great video. At the 8 minute mark, your conversation with the staff about the difference between people in the west compare to people in Asia was spot on. Being an Asian American, I know exactly what you are talking about.
Thanks. It was pleasantly surprising that she brought that up all of a sudden.
They don’t have dramatic reactions, but I think they were still surprised. I envy you speaking Japanese and Chinese so well. I was fun to watch.
Yeah, I think they were surprised and trying to hold it back a little.
Even though not everyone you encountered wasn’t all surprised, you had really nice conversations & got to know them too!
Especially this time just talking to someone can brighten a person’s day & just getting to know the people you encounter in the area shows the heart you have.
The Taiwanese
woman behind the counter was so beautiful - her thoughtfulness and gracious kindness.
You're very smart.
I saw others on videos that just said a few things only to get views, and they were called geniuses.
Be proud!! You deserve it. Stay yourself and be proud for all your hard work and your brains.
Needs a better term than a prank but I enjoy them a lot.
mavfan1 I don’t know any other good searchable terms for these. But it is a prank to me because I am not acting as I normally do when I just want to buy food and leave. I never suddenly use Chinese here in Japan even at a Chinese restaurant. But hey, glad you liked the video.
Hmm...good call. We'll figure something out. Walkabout?
Well, as the comedian Steven Wright says, "What's another word for 'thesaurus'?" Hey, cool vid. Thanks.
@@OrientalPearl Just remove the first half of the title and leave " Shocking JAPANESE People with Fluent Chinese", it's obvious that you dont act the same way off camera
@@lionurek White girl surprise JAPANESE People with Fluent Chinese!
Every language: Bye byeeeee 🙌🏽🙌🏽🤣
Papa, mama
Love the way you connect intellectually and socially with the people you speak to. Communication is key to every relationship.
The staff just seemed glad to be able to speak their native language and connect with a stranger, they probably don’t get that often.
I loved hearing your conversation with the Taiwanese lady even if it wasn't really a surprise for her. It was insightful and really sweetly pleasant to watch.
She was so sweet.
Oriental Pearl Yep, true, you both were!!
6:22 watch his eyebrows when you mention Fudan University, he's impressed!
Cryo Lockdown That’s why she loves name-dropping Fudan University in every single video.
One reason is that these are all first meetings and people keep asking me why I am here and the other reason is like you said to shock them. Because very very very few Americans go to Chinese universities. Most of the time Chinese go to American universities.
Oriental Pearl I understand where you’re coming from. However, in most of the interactions I’ve seen, people don’t actually ask you which uni you’re attending. You’ve always voluntarily told them you go to Fudan, instead of just saying that you’re attending uni in China. That’s why it comes across as name-dropping. You might not intend to be showing off, but that’s how it rubs off.
Alex really? That rubs you off? As a Chinese, I’ll be very happy to hear that a foreigner not only goes to a university in my country but goes to one of the top universities. That just shows how much hard work she must’ve putting in. People like to be around with people who works hard. Don’t you?
Bourne Jason oh, I’m sure she worked hard. There’s no denying that. But when someone goes around telling everyone they meet that they study at Fudan (without being prompted), it really does make that person look like a show off. I’d be saying the same thing if someone walked around telling everyone they study at Harvard.
I’ve been watching her podcasts for a while now, and I just love her style of interacting with people, and her way of making people smile (me included). Please keep up with these podcasts. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
This video brighten everyone's day!
What a lovely exchange of personal experience and views made possible by a common language.
the most beautiful voice ive heard :)
Wow you switch your langauge channel so quickly😆 Sometimes I will get lost if i switch between Cantonese, Mandarin, English🤯
That was something that took a long time to learn to do. It might look easy in the video, but there was a lot of work involved.
These videos are such a treat! I catch myself smiling every time and fascinated at the down to earth glimpses of life in the Orient. You usher us in so well!
I'm so glad to hear you say that. I'll be making another video in a few days that will give you a good idea of what it's like to live here.
Continue to keep up the great work! These videos always put a smile on my face!
I also got really worn out by japanese having big reactions to me speaking Japnese, it insired me to study chinese and travel there. I really regret my time being upset therebecause i was really having such a great time and its a wonderful place. try not to get hung up on those things. I enjoy your videos and refreshing my chinese
It gets old after many years. But it's not going to change anytime soon, so I decided to just let it go.
This is my fav channel, we want more vids
Greetings from Yemen 🇾🇪
Favorite channel! Alright, I'm so happy!
I totally love the vlogs! It’s the way you open them up for conversation. The people don’t hold back when speaking to you and they see how you’ve really taken the time to learn the languages. Thanks for sharing. I’m subscribed and hit the 🛎 for notifications.
Thank you so much for joining the channel Jim. I hope you enjoy it!
Anming, you are popular because of your authenticity and individuality - humble people recognize that. You are trained in marketing and specialize in these languages and cultures, and you worked hard and deserve every reward. Those are your individual accomplishments, and you're just beginning. Everyone in your videos seems quite unique and different from the next. I think most westerners are humble and special. It's amazing how quickly a smile and hello begets a smile and hello. Maybe you were just having a lively conversation with the sweet lady taking your order, but she did not seem to agree with your stereotyping of westerners😊. Anyhoo, thanks for sharing - very entertaining and enlightening.
Thanks for your message. I see you watched the English teaching video, that's how you know I was working in marketing before this :) Ha ha, I may be new to CZcams, but I have learned about social media in school. lol I wasn't trying to get a shot at westerners in general. In my mind at the time it was my reaction to "White person speaks PERFECT Chinese" videos.
I learned my first sentence in Mandarin "Excuse me, can you speak Chinese?" I'm excited to learn more, I'll be fluent when I'm 44 (I'm 34 now lol...)
That's so cool. Who taught you? My old boss told me it would take 10 years to learn Chinese when I quit my job to move to China and he was wrong. ;)
@@OrientalPearl I'm using an app lol. It's actually "can you speak English" lol oops.
That's amazing!
How is it that these people don't see your camera? Or do you have something small/discreet like an osmo pocket, and they don't realize it?
I think some of them can see it. But the camera is very small. It's a gopro hero 7.
I love your bubbly, cheerful and authentic personality. It is always a joy to watch your videos. I am sure you are inspirational to many who wants to learn new languages. Keep up with the great videos!
Thank you so much for your kind words. That makes it worth it to keep going.
The convos you have are always great.
▓▒░ I could understand like one out of
twenty words in Mandarin. - And one out
of thirty in Japanese.
Thank goodness for the English subtitles.

Well the trick is to talk to them in English first for some time then all of a sudden you start to speak chinese. Then they will be astonished. That is the method xiaoma and laoshu use.
OK this is Japan. So maybe you want to start the conversation in English or Japanese depending on the circumstance. Anyway dont reveal your chinese until the maximum impact is expected.
big brain strat
pop wittenino People don’t really know much English in Japan, of course. But the bottom line to be quite honest is I don’t feel the need to copy other youtubers. Why do you want me to be a clone? I have other things to offer. And I don’t much care for the content of the two youtubers you mentioned. So, I’m going to do something different,
@Oriental Pearl Totally! Be yourself! Thanks for these videos. I grew up in a very diverse area of Texas and took 3 years of Chinese in high school, and watching these videos actually helps me remember it, and learn more!
Oriental Pearl It doesnt matter they speak english or not. Just a lead up. I said that because you seemed so desperate to film stunned looks on chinese people. If you have your own trick thats good.
Oriental Pearl A collab between you, Laoshuu and Xiomanmacy would be better than Avengers infinity war crossover!
2:40 "嗲嗲的" is what she said, not sure how to translate
Some things are hard to translate into English.
Me as a Chinese, I think 嗲嗲的 means “to flirt a little bit”.
I work with 2 guys that are Vietnamese, we work at a Honda shop in Florida and I have both of them to practice my Vietnamese on, and they both tell me if my pronunciation is correct or not and your videos inspire me to keep working at learning another language
Love the shock at first but because you hold yourself so well they feel comfortable to start a conversation Loved the video Anming Thankyou. Many more to watch yet x
Need to drop the “prank”. Sounds a little tasteless and beneath a very impressive woman that you are.
Ha, I agree that a lot of people doing these speaking Chinese videos are doing it in a very tasteless way. This video is probably the least prank-like video in this series. I think I'll make a video titled "I am not a clueless white girl that just speaks Chinese". lol
I am so happy ! I am learning chinese and I am actually learning a lot by watching your videos! I am starting to understand a little without subtitles! YAY :D
As usual great video. Love the interaction with Chinese in Japan. You can see they are very happy to have a good conversation in their home language with you and it seems they open up and are more personable once they see how well you speak. Keep on posting and I’ll keep watching.. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks, more to come very very soon.

This is a really interesting channel. It is fascinating to hear these casual and candid remarks in conversation that reveal so much. Thank you for posting this.
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@OrientalPearl And by reveal, I meant the casual insights provided about differences in language, how people from different areas express themselves, how they think, and so on. This channel provides a really open and honest view of things, simply expressed in a matter of fact way, with no apparent agenda or motive. It is a documentary in a sense. Great work!

I really enjoyed listening to your conversation with the shop keeper. I felt that we learned some details about the person and some of their thinking.
