Here's the thing, Omori isn't really evil. He's like a white blood cell, he's only there to protect Sunny from the truth. He is the representation of the dissociative amnesia that Sunny gets to hide from the truth. That's why they hug at the end because Sunny has demonstrated that he now accepts the truth and that Omori is no longer necessary

It's basically sunny hugging his inner child. He finally tends to him by hugging him and reassuring himself that he doesn't have to grieve alone.
I feel like this comfort and reassurance wasn't given to him after mari's death or when his parents divorced. So he gives omori what he had been denied.

Yeah. And the reason Omori finishes off Sunny is because in the "oyasumi" ending is because Sunny fails to accept the truth, and accept himself. But because he already remembered the past, Omori has no other way to "protect him" So as a last resort, Omori goes full on "self destruction mode" in order to prevent further trauma and pain.

One thing people miss about the battle with Omori is that at this point Sunny knows the truth. He remembers everything. Omori has already decided to work against Sunny and now Sunny is literally fighting the urge to kill himself. In themost corrupted parts of the music, you can hear Mari shouting "Stop it!", her screaming while falling down the stairs, crashing onto the broken violin, and Sunny crying. Sunny is reliving that moment of his life during this battle and the amount of pain and distress he is feeling is immense. This fight couldn't have been done any better or in any other kind of medium

Things like that don't just go away. No matter how much you try to ignore it, it'll just eat at you. It won't go away. @An oven I did my best to survive as long as possible and didn't stop because I felt like I had to do it for Sunny.
And I know that.. it's controversial, but I don't think badly of Sunny. I just cried, I knew this wasn't Sunny's intention and I imagined a dialog like this:
S: "I don't want this anymore, I'm done with it all, it's always just practice, play your Violin, do this, do that, I just don't want this anymore!"
      S: *breaks the violin*
M: "Sunny! Stop it! What are you doing? That violin was a gift from your friends-"
      S: "Just leave me alone!"
      S: *pushes Mari*
      M: *falls down the stairs*
S: *still standing there in shock about what he just did, finally runs down the stairs, shouting*
      S: "MARI!"
S: *lifts her shoulder up, realizing she isn't conscious*
      S: "no.."
S: *drags her up the stairs in denial, refusing to believe she is dead, carrying her to her bed, laying her down, as the last glimpse of hope that she wakes up or is just 'playing dead' burns out*
*Sunny looks down into his hands, tears rolling down his cheeks, his heart pounding in his ears. "What have I done" he thinks to himself*
This is what's been messing with me the most. The way he must have felt in that situation, it's.. unbearable. Basil entered his room not long after, as he was visiting them to see if they're ready, probably to wish them good luck, I don't know, but then realizing Mari is.. Basil, likely realizing Sunny would get in serious trouble, his best friend, he wanted to help somehow, even if it meant covering it up and keeping it a secret to the very end.
I think none of them deserves to be hated. They were young, they were in shock and didn't know what to do, probably feared going to jail, it's.. somewhat understandable that they did this.
Mari doesn't hate Sunny. 'Something' aka Mari said "Sunny... I love you" in Blackspace. She also appeared in other scenes expressing her hopes that Sunny will forgive himself.
If Sunny did anything of that intentionally, he wouldn't grieve this badly, he wouldn't go into complete isolation ("omori" could be "hikikomori" Japanese for social withdrawal) and hate himself so desperately for what he has done.
This is why I want to believe, that Hero, Kel and Aubrey may be in disbelief for some time, with Aubrey and Hero taking more time than for example Kel, who wasn't as close with Mari, to process this information, but I also would like to believe that Hero would, probably in tears still just say "it's okay", which would also make Basil's quotes and hopes come true. I feel like Hero would understand, that Sunny isn't that kind of person, that Sunny deeply regretted it (especially after mot seeing him for 3 years) and that Sunny probably went through enough things of his own.
This is solely based on how Hero talked to Aubrey when he heard from Kel that she stole the photo album. Hero was very understanding in a situation that would make others say "you are rude" or worse, Hero didn't just rely on others either, and rather asked her whether the rumors he heard - first hand from his own brother - were true or not.
I feel like Hero would tear up, but also just hug Sunny. Kel would be unlikely to hate Sunny, especially when Hero would hug Sunny and say "it's okay", or "I understand". Aubrey may want some time alone afterwards, Hero might want the same, but Hero - in this case - would likely talk to Aubrey some time later about this, if not right away, trying to explain the situation to her from Sunny's point, as Aubrey used to have issues understanding that other people have different reasons than those she would think of, which is in line with her personality.
I just.. I just really wish for a happy ending to all of this. I'm sure there would be an initial moment of shock, with lines like "How could you" "This can't be" which would quickly be accompanied by "You didn't want this" or something along the lines of that..
I feel like Hero would understand, and contrary to another popular belief, I also believe that Basil would be forgiven too, even though he 'came up with the plan' in the end, both Sunny and Basil did, and even if only one of them came up with it, both executed the plan to cover it up.
      And it's understandable.
As kid, one is scared of law enforcement officers (I still am to this very day) just because they have authority. They can do a lot of things. I don't know how I would have acted in this situation if I'd have been in that, but I feel like it is plausible that I would have done so too especially with the encouragement of a friend that would tell me "we have to do something or they are going to lock you away" or something like that...
I don't know, I just wanted to say this because I just wanted somebody to hear this theory.

@@sage_x2002 The thing with Basil is that you see in the game he did what he did to protect Sunny but at the same time he didn't believe Sunny his best friend would do such a thing. That it had to have been someone else behind him as he says when Sunny goes to confront Basil about the truth of that day. While Sunny created Omori to forget everything that day Basil still remembers everything but denies that Sunny was the one who killed Mari and is the one who came up with the plan to make it look like a suicide so as to protect Sunny. Also don't think you're wrong about the hikikomori as it is established that Sunny stopped seeing everyone and never really left the house at all in several years. there is even an ending that is called Hikikomori which you can get if you absolutely refuse to leave the house in the real world in the game.

      What unknowns?
It is ultimately Sunny's story and if Sunny can find and save Basil.
Almost everything in the game is explained or heavily hinted, even the 3 friend's reactions who are tied to heavily to emotions. Kel who deals with things by trying to find happiness, Aubry through anger, and Hero through Sadness.
Remember if Sunny came clean Basil would be alone in town with Kel, Aubry, and Hero. Kel would be upset at first but be happy at least his two friends are okay and are willing to visit him.
Hero while sad would also lose any doubts of failing Mari or not being there for her, he'd be sad about the two hiding it and how much it hurt him but he'd forgive them as there was implication Mari was pushing Sunny to the point she could be considered bullying him them.
Aubry would be upset they abandoned her after doing that and left everything Mari hidden but she herself also suffers and wants to keep the bad out of the good. With time she'd likely understand especially with the other's help. She might even be one of the quicker ones to forgive Sunny and Basil as she herself has anger issues.
Since Aubry has anger and lashing out issues but everyone considers her a friend... being hit with a nail bat is no different then pushing someone away who is getting to close.

@@vapor_829 There actually is a problem with that (well, more than one). As Alex said, the point is Sunny was able to tell the truth. The game is about Sunny. The friendships relationship is done so you can understand why is it so difficult, why is it a trauma for Sunny and why telling the truth to people that you lied to for years that are basically your life companions is so important. I understand people that want to know, I sometimes feel it, but many narrative tales leave stuff out because precisely its better that way. Think about this: people have different thoughts. Some think Sunny should be forgiven, some do not. If Omocat answered in any way, many people would feel betrayed. In this way, we can imagine what the outcome was and discuss it with others, wich is the best thing that an art piece can do, make you think, introspect and discuss. If we knew the answer, the discussion would be "It's right / It's wrong" instead of what we felt through the game and what we think happened. Also, as a game that reflects so many stuff that happens on our lives, not knowing makes sense, you dont always know everything that happens on your life. You sometimes dont know what others do when you leave, or what they think. I understand the people that like stories to fully tell what happens, but they need to understand that many stories benefit for leaving blank spaces so we have to do the thinking.

For years and years he was Sunny's coping mechanism as he stayed at home surviving as a shell of his former self. Omori helped take Sunny's mind off the source of his issues, preventing him from remembering his mistake. He was less of a bad guy, more of an obstacle that needed to be overcome, hence the two hugging it out after the battle (for better or worse). Sunny's hugging Omori being more of an assurance to him, as if to say 'there's no need to worry about me anymore, I will work through it' and Omori's hugging Sunny after he lost the battle being more 'Don't worry, it will all be over soon'.

i've found myself wishing for a sequel, prequel, anything on occasion, but if i'm being honest i wouldn't have omori any other way. the main themes of omori - forgiveness, guilt, and friendship, and the title of the good ending as the 'true ending', make it pretty clear that sunny's friends would forgive him. but since it doesn't explicitly show that forgiveness, it is still a loose end that people can run with creating their own works of fiction going in literally any direction.
so although it is a bit sad to have a story that i care so much about end without confirmation of aubrey, kel, hero, and even basil forgiving sunny, it allows me to love omori even more and think about the games themes and ending(s) in a way i wouldn't have if omocat just showed how everyone reacted/ended up.

Same. I have spent a lot of time reading OMORI fanfics AO3, because it's nice to see what different people headcanons are for the game post-canon. While the overall quality of the fanfics is fairly mixed for the most part, it's still great that since OMOCAT left it open-ended, fans are free to interpret how the friends would react on their own. And hey, every now and then, we get some damn good reads out of it, such as _Snow_ by Chocolian or _The Warmth of Summer_ by tsukithewolf. But hey, at the end of the day, everyone is free to choose their own headcannons for what happened post-canon. OMORI is such a good base for fanfics, as so many things are left up to interpretation. Whether those fanfics are an AU, or they take place before or after the canon story, there's so many good ones out there on this game alone. All of this fan interaction just makes me love OMORI even more.

Of course his friends would forgive him. The entire point of the reality segment is to show you how the group is not doomed, how they can recover, and how they might in time be close the way they used to be. Arguing against that idea is pretty much confirming what Omori was telling Sunny in their fight: "And when they find out the truth, they'll hate you more than you hate yourself."
At worst, they'd need time apart to reflect. But Hero, the one who beats himself up for "failing" Mari and being unable to keep everyone together, gets a weight off his shoulders knowing Mari didn't commit suicide. And he promised that he'd keep the group together. Plus, he's studying to become a doctor and would be able to recontextualize all of Sunny's actions. People always act like Hero would hate him but that is so off base it's unreal. Hero would probably be the first to genuinely understand Sunny's mindset.

@6:00 "The final boss doesn't require much strategy" I beg to differ... I've watched probably two dozen+ playthroughs and I've seen different youtubers go about it a different way. Some religiously hold onto the Encore+Allegro thing, while others skip Encore and go straight for Allegro and use Cherish to do a 2nd Allegro and then regular attacks where needed. And sometimes, luck plays a big part too, esp. in the few streamers who get to the final background with the 4 friends. It's a tense fight, and it's only scripted somewhat. What Omori does is entirely random, especially during the last two phases. He can sometimes choose to regular attack you 3-4 times in a row... or he will spam his hair ability 5 times in a row. And there's always that risk.. and I've seen some streamers take ridiculous risks, such as having 150HP left and deciding to regular attack instead of calm down. Sometimes it works and Omori does a regular slash... sometimes they are sent back to the beginning by a falling hair attack. Also, on the thing about Humphrey, well.. yes, Humphrey is long and drawn out. _That's the entire point._ It's supposed to be, because it's Omori's last-ditch effort to keep Sunny away from the truth, to delay getting to Black Space.

  • @theboythatsayshootyhoo3865

in my opinion, the final fight was less of a confrontation of an 'evil' version of the main character, and more of a confrontation of the identity sunny made for himself to escape his problems. omori is the younger version of sunny, the sunny that existed before he accidentally killed mari. the shy, stoic little kid who feared being alone and could rely on his friends to help and keep him company. this identity is the comfort of pretending, dissociating from yourself.
omori and sunny were never two seperate characters, which is why in the end when they embrace each other and omori fades into sunny, that is the moment of acceptance for who he is. though the childlike identity he developed in his dreams is a part of him, he cannot escape who he is in the real world.
i think in the end the point of the game was not to come to an ending full of forgiveness from the people around him, it was for sunny to forgive himself and realise that he was just a child then, that he went through something traumatic and now he has to face the concequences of keeping a lie in for so long. we dont get to see the other characters reactions because it is not our place to judge them whether or not they forgive sunny. maybe the idea is to think about whether or not you would forgive sunny, knowing that he was a child and thought he had to keep this secret for so long. or i just like thinking about that. from a morally philosophical standpoint the game gives a lot to think about.

If we were to get any more content for OMORI - I want it to be from Kel's perspective. Throughout the story we get to know a lot of how each character reacted to Maris passing and the way they coped and carried that trauma. We see how down trodden and stretched thin Hero is, we see the anger that Aubrey carries and obviously we get a lot of Sunny and Basils perspective. But Kel? Kel remained mostly the same. We catch glimpses of who he is and how much of his character is a facade but I can't help but feel his perspective would ultimately shatter the fans. We have Kel- the kid who was forever in the shadow of his older brother, the overlooked and 'stupid' kid of the group who only got attention when he picked fights. The one person who treated him kindly was Mari and his friends, and then Mari is gone and his friends leave him alone. He tries desperately for years to get his friends together, tries so hard to move on and be that positive outlook that Mari used to be for everyone. And one day he succeeds! Sunny comes out to play and he thinks maybe everything will turn out okay. But days later multiple people he loves are in the hospital, and when he learns the truth of that pain thats been affecting him for four years? I think the most heart wrenching thing that could happen is that Aubrey and Hero, while upset and mad, ultimately forgive them. But Kel? Kel breaks. If Kel hadnt tried so hard to help sunny, hadnt tried so hard to bring people back together, none of this would have happened. He should never have knocked on Sunnys door.

Also, the truth could bring closure and peace to Kel, Aurbey, and especially Hero, as they will no longer believe that Mari was secretly so unhappy with her life as to decide ending it was her best option. His character just isn’t as deep as basil or Aubrey’s, and I’m sorry but it’s just a fact, Basil might honestly be the deepest character in game only being either tied with or beaten by Sunny. While Kel is an amazing choice, he just doesn’t have much mystery to him as Basil or Aubrey, I mean, we know how he coped with Mari, plus Kel is already there for most of RW so we know a lot about him so making a whole new game just to be about him kinda just seems pointless. My interpretation is that after the truth was revealed, Sunny's friends forgave him, but requested for time away from him so they could fully accept it and get everything mentally organized. They're not abandoning him, but I feel like they're going to need a bit of time and space before they visit Sunny's new house or Sunny visits them. I feel like the reactions are still canon to some extent. I mean, it certainly isn't happy news. They just learned that one of their best friends killed his sister, which was also their dear friend. I feel like they forgive him, but just need some time to simmer down.
I've had to lay some extremely heavy stuff on some close friends/family before, and while they didn't abandon me or become enraged, they separated themselves away from me for a little while and took some time to think.

@@woopnull9103 I'm pretty sure sunny's parents knew the truth. Mari fell down the stairs and left blood stains in the sheets so we know that she did hit her head hard. Sunny and Basil hanging her would not cover the trauma on her head and probably many other bruises around her body, so the parents would quickly notice that something wasn't right. Plus we have that flashback/hole from the last key were we can see Sunny's dad cutting down the tree saying "You're not my son" and Sunny's mom's shadow on the first room when reaching for the truth saying "You're my only other son, I can't lose you too". His mom cover for him and the father probably left them because he couldn't live alongside Sunny anymore.
As for the ending, my headcanon is that they forgive Sunny, but not immediately. All 3 of them had a reason to forgive Sunny, plus the whole game is all about forgiveness. Kel is the one that did care the most about Sunny, trying to get to him multiple times during his shut in years, even if that was his coping mechanism. Aubrey had a recent scene with basil that could've ended very much like Sunny's and Mari's if Hero weren't there to save the day. Hero's the one that would take the longest time to take the news, but the biggest reason of why Hero was so depressed was because he tought Mari commit suicide and he didn't saw her signs of being depressed, and now that he learns that she didn't kill herself that should lift a lot of weight of his mind. Plus, he know that Mari would've wanted him to forgive Sunny, after all it was an accident, Sunny didn't do it on purpose.
Now, that they'd forgive basil... After all it was his idea what caused so much pain to everyone, including Sunny and himself

  • @mailcs06
    @mailcs06 Před rokem +20

Honestly I found Omori's boss fight to be an incredible final battle.
For one, the build up is incredible. You spend more of your playtime of the game as Omori than as Sunny. You start the game as Omori. The game is named after Omori. Naturally, I spent 90% of the game believing that Omori was nothing more than Sunny's dream world avatar, which he uses to escape and repress his trauma. So imagine my shock when after reconciling with Aubrey and going to sleep, I awaken in White Space in full color, and after walking a bit, see myself silently staring back at me.
Then, after overcoming all my fears (including my fear of the truth), remembering that I killed Mari, fighting Basil, and remembering the things that make life worth living, I ended up back in White Space, and confronted the foe I expected the least, yet made perfect sense... Myself.
I feel that in this fight, Omori no longer represents Sunny's way of repressing his trauma. He already recalled it. It is too late to repress it any longer. Instead, here Omori a representation of Sunny's self-hatred that was spawned from remembering his trauma, and his fear that things will only get worse for everyone if he reveals the truth to his friends. In contrast, I believe that in this fight, Sunny himself represents the joy spawned from his happy memories, and the hope that things will finally be able to get better if he comes clean. It's a clash between dread and hope, between pain and joy. Between choosing to end it all, or to carry on. If Sunny's negative emotions win out, he decides killing himself would be best, as it would spare him the pain of living with the fact he killed his sister, and would allow his friends to remain blissfully ignorant. If Sunny's positive emotions win out, he decides that the joys of life outweigh the pain of living with his past, that his friends deserve to know the truth, and that all their lives will be better off if he tells them it.
The battle's music is also amazing. It feels climatic and epic, without being intense. And while every other boss theme in the game (at least on the Sunny Route) feels fun and gamey to an extent, this one feels sorrowful and serious. It really sells that this is a matter of life and death for Sunny.
Furthermore, Omori's actual fight design is amazing. All of his attacks other than the erase attacks are ones that you can use as him on both routes, while his first erase attack is his Red Hands skill from the Omori Route. And I knew that when I brought him to 0 HP, "Omori did not succumb." would appear, since that very line saved me several times during the playthrough.
Additionally, while passing the fight isn't super hard, if you manage to deplete Omori's 5th health bar, which is difficult to do, as eventually in phase 5 you can no longer heal, you are "rewarded" with some lore(?); all 4 of Sunny's friends hanging bodies are added to the overlay, which implies that if Sunny kills himself immediately after mending the friend group, it would lead to all of their demises, not just his own.
Anyway, thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.

I’ve always seen Sunny as a little kid- like he didn’t age after Mari died. The scene where he wakes up crying in the hospital really established this view. To me, he’s just a little kid who make a big mistake and let it ruin him. So while I understand that his friends probably didn’t accept or forgive what he did, I like to interpret it like everything was ok. That maybe they can look past it one day. More than anything, I want to give Sunny a hug. I see so much of myself in him, so it’s difficult to imagine things ending poorly for him, after everything he’s been through.

I think seeing Basil's reaction at the end is enough. The whole point of the good ending is to save him and release him of the burden of keeping the secret. Whatever reactions the other three have to the truth is their prerogative. If they want to forgive Sunny for what they did, so be it. If they are outraged and never want to see Sunny again, that's their right. They're the only people left who can rightly judge him at this point, given how much their lives have been affected. Their reactions are their own.

Omori is a masterpiece, I honestly want to see a sequel or prequel, Omori is the first game where I felt sad because of how torn apart everyone was when someone died. It left me wanting more, it’s just such a good game with possibly a very very bright future ahead of it.

5:45 I think the final boss fight with Omori does utilize the medium of gaming very well, down to nearly every element involved. The fight itself introduces enough mechanics (through the skills that you can use, and the Afraid emotion) to cause you to think of a strategy, while being simple enough to not distract you from the narrative. Everything else in the fight is very carefully selected: The music, the Hellmari imagery, the font Omori speaks in, "Omori did not succumb", the UI elements (Sunny's portrait turning into a corrupted version of him during the attack that makes you Afraid).
If you manage to get to the final phase of the fight with Omori (which is actually quite difficult), the background shows *four hanging bodies*. Essentially creating a cascading effect from the implication of Sunny committing suicide. It's not even hard to imagine this, given what the group has already been through. I legitimately can't think of a single more harrowing thing I've ever seen in media. Even THIS is utilizing the medium of gaming as it's hidden behind a phase that can be difficult to get to (especially on your first try).

    • @mailcs06
      @mailcs06 Před rokem +1

Yeah even getting to the last phase is absolutely brutal, especially on a first playthrough because you will likely waste turns after being inflicted with the unremovable fear trying to remove it or to heal as the game gives no indication as to why Calm Down isn't working anymore, and since after a certain point, losing the fight will force you into the ending choice, even if you haven't reached the final phase yet. And even if one makes it that far, you would actually have to notice the four bodies among everything else happening.
I only barely made it to the final phase on my playthrough, with 7 HP left, thanks to several lucky basic slashes from Omori towards the end of the 5th phase.

I always figured the context with sunny and basil actually managing to get Mari in the tree is that they never really say who finds Mari the next morning, besides Sunny's parents, so my headcanon with it always was that they did it so shittily that his parents almost immediately knew what had happened, or at least knew it wasn't Mari who hung herself up there, and decided to go along with the plot and lie to everyone they know to protect their son from facing repercussions, kinda how a lot of the other context in the game shows this tore their marriage apart (The whole scene with Sunny's dad chopping down the tree and saying Sunny is "no son of his," and his mom crying worried they're gonna take her son away next)
Like lets be real, it's two kids who managed to tie a "noose" with a jump-rope and hang a body from a tree, thinking it in any way would look realistic and believable (not to mention the whole "once a coroner looks her over they're gonna notice she died due to trauma and not hanging") I think it adds a lot of depth to making this whole nightmare scenario incredibly believable since otherwise you'd have to make a lot of excuses to the contrary.

My friend introduced me to Omori my only warnings being "it messes with your mind" and "in some ways it's like DDLC". I watched a full non commentary game play on CZcams which sorta ruined me playing the actual game but the game was greater playing than watching. After multiple playthroughs of the same thing just for a different ending or achievement it takes a bit before you tire of the game, maybe a week or a few for breaks but this game is a masterpiece. After each time playing I only got sadder. And I haven't had the guts for bad ending send help like the game unconsciously guilt trips me by existing. The friends thinking both siblings had done a ➰️🌳 and an oyasumi, while Basil deals with the trauma from the accident and his last moments with Sunny being a bloody fight... he might as well get a second trauma demon. And Sunny's poor mother leaving to the city by herself without her children or a husband.

6:04 I think it just fits. Sunny is trying to overcome his despair, he is not fooling himself with some silly fightning scenario. What we are witnessing in the final battle is a representation of how one mind can be disrupted into two desires: pursuing and giving up. The whole sunny route itself is about freeing Sunny from his dissociation. Making the final battle, the epitome of Sunny's development, a Headspace-like showdown would just feel unnatural.

I like that the game doesn't show their reactions not only because it gives room for speculation, but also because that's not what this journey is about. It's about Sunny forgiving himself. What happened with Mari was horrible, and maybe his friends will never forgive him. But if he wants to live without Omori, he has to learn that he deserves happiness, too, without relying on others' affirmations.
In the final boss battle, Sunny is fighting his depression, his unhealthy coping mechanisms, his emotions which he has sculpted and given far too much control to. Someone else in the comments mentioned it already, this is not a battle of cool moves and using all that you've learned, this is a battle of endurance. A battle of survival. He is fighting against the root of his problems and he is terrified, as shown in the game dialogue: "You tried to CALM DOWN... But your lungs fought to breathe." And yes, his friends positive words do help keep him going during the fight, but in the end it's HIS fight. It's his decision to keep going, even when he succumbs-- I'm referring to the "Do you wish to continue?" screen.
Most likely, even after Sunny wins in the good ending, there'll still be days where he has to battle Omori. But now he has a better understanding of what he's facing, and is equipped with the tools he needs to help remind himself that everything will be okay.

I still feel like OMORI's Headspace stuff can be incredibly boring and it doesn't help that outside our main cast, I'm not particularly invested in any side character.
I'm personally not too bothered by the ease of the final boss in the Sunny Route since in my eyes, the Sunny Route is more or less the story route, I don't think it was ever intended to be particularly challenging, disappointing as it may sound.
I don't mind the idea that the story's ending is ambiguous, though I know some people prefer something more concrete. In my mind, I think the others will forgive, even if it takes a little while.
And maybe you're right. In a sequel, why not focus on another character. I'd say Aubrey might be the best choice since she's the one that has done and nearly done some really reprehensible things and could be a good comparison point to Sunny, who obviously killed someone - accident or otherwise.

  • @hollowedboi5937

Honest, while the first half might be difficult to get through, reading through Aku no Hana I believe gives some vicarious closure for Omori as the main character in that has to face his mistakes by going back to the town where it all went down. Some people forgive him, some damn and blame him for some shit, and others just don’t care.
I think seeing that main character face it all, apologize when needed, and still continue moving forward despite the darkness still looming over him, creates a cathartic sense of closure and great representation of grieving. As Dr.K put it, grieving is addressing the problem, internalizing it, and then moving on.
It’s also y’know, the dark flower with the eye on it and a lot of imagery of eyes in a dark area or industrial area showing the guilt of those moments lingering over him. The main character ending up closing himself off and being a loner who attempts some ‘not so good stuff’ And the theme in the anime sounding a helluva lot like the theme at the end of Omori kinda gives off some signs of influence 👀👌🏼

  • @aquaticbean
    @aquaticbean Před 9 měsíci +5

This was a fascinating analysis , and has really made me think about the ending again. My perspective on why the end stops there was always that the important part of Sunny's journey was him coming to terms *himself* with his trauma about Mari, and learning to forgive himself as that is the only way he can start healthily healing and grieving. By learning the truth, battling Omori and even just making the step to communicate what happened to his friends, Sunny has grown so much and, in some ways, that arc is over. Perhaps this is why, even though the ending leaves many threads hanging, the game still doesn't feel incomplete and the main storyline feels well rounded and a natural place to finish. By finishing with the group's reactions, that would divert your attention from the true meaning of the story and place more emphasis on the gang's new trauma to process rather than Sunny's journey to healing that has been so expertly portrayed in the final battle, perhaps diminishing the impactful way the game stays with you even after you get that "thanks for playing!" screen.
However what I hadn't considered before was how the ending works a narrative device, and your observation on the hanging thread allowing us to engage with the story more and how giving us all the answers would feel out of pocket and odd for what the game has built up is INCREDIBLE. The way the game feels complete yet still leaves you hanging and asking questions is masterful, and fits perfectly into the world and the message of how messy and complicated trauma and mental health really is. Perhaps also leaving you hanging allows the game to really dig in its meaning and stay with you in the form of all your unanswered questions, allowing it to change your view on the world and leave echoes in your soul for a long time after, truly ingraining its message. In other words, thinking about what happens after the good end is a gateway into thinking more about the game after you've finished playing it, giving the game space and time to give you the emotional impact it needs. Of course this isn't the only way the game does this, but it's an interesting thing to think about! (in those it resonates with ofc, everyone's different and so everyone's experience of the game is therefore unique too! but im guessing if you're watching an analysis video then you get what im talking about lmao)
Damn, there's a lot to think about! Also just realised I wrote a lot, I'm sorry! But analysing this game is just too addicting AXHJHXAHXJ
    In summary:
    - In my opinion, the game finishes after Sunny tells his friends the truth as this signifies the end of his personal emotional arc.
    - Idea of the game leaving strings to keep you hanging and to fit in with the rest of the narrative is amazing.
    - Good balance between the game feeling complete but still leaving many questions unanswered.
    - Perhaps the "Leaving-you-hanging" effect is one of the things that helps the game to leave such an emotional impact on you, the player, once you complete it, as all your unanswered questions keep it lingering in your mind.
Thanks for getting this far, please have a cookie 🍪oh and also if this made you think or you have any responses to my thoughts, please lmk! I'd love to discuss and analyse with y'all :D

i actually think it’s quite plausible for sunny and basil, though as we learn from the hidden text regarding the truth poloroids, mostly basil, to be able to get mari into the tree. using leverage is something humans have done for a long time. for example, the way that slabs of stone were hauled onto the pyramids in ancient times is by utilizing leverage, lifting a heavy stone block up using another object of similar weight, and letting gravity do the rest. you’d have to get the jumprope over a particularly thick branch, and use leverage and body weight to hoist it up. from there, especially if basil used the toy box as a platform, you just tie the end to the rope and hope it holds.

personally, i think it's important that the good ending stopped exactly where it did -- hell, i would even argue that it's necessary. as much as some fans would have wanted to see their reactions, in the end, it wouldn't change anything. regardless of whether or not Kel, Aubrey & Hero would ever find a way to forgive him, the important thing is that Sunny (& Basil too, for that matter) finds the resolve to forgive himself. of course we wouldn't see their reactions -- after all, why would we? it's almost completely besides the point.
besides, there are various hints that they do somehow find it in themselves to forgive him eventually. i don't see the white egret orchid brought up enough in analysis videos of OMORI, but it obviously holds significance -- every single time we interact with it, we're reminded of its symbolism. "my thoughts will follow you into your dreams." whether you want to take this as a subtle implication of genuine supernatural interference or just Sunny's intuition towards these friends he's known for most of his life, i personally think it means that, when OMORI/Sunny talks to his friends & Mari in the dream world (the real ones, not the overly idealized cutouts of them he created to suit his fantasy), it's meant to be taken as their actual thoughts, not just Sunny telling himself what he desperately wants to believe.
so when Hero, Kel & Aubrey talk to him right before his final confrontation with OMORI, it's clearly the game telling us that, somehow, someday, they will forgive him, & Basil too. even if it takes a while. even if they're reluctant or even hate them for it at first.
god, this game is so fucking good, y'all. i don't think i'll ever shut up about it.

If they do make something based off the other characters, they should make them all add up to one point where based on the actions you did would give you a type of epilogue while not exactly having a "true" ending, instead having multiple endings based off of what options you pick throughout the routes.

When playing the game for the frist time, and seeing the reveal near the end of the game, I went through all kind of emotion. I was horrified, even a bit angry at Sunny for hiding such a thing, as you trust him so much since he's the main character... Then I was also understanding of the situation, and how it must have pained him more than anyone else, but still remained shocked ...
I believe, his friend would react the same way and that makes the ending very satisfying to me.

I think Omori was also very effective in making the player look into themselves for the answer as to whether they would forgive Sunny for what he had done. I know when I was nearing the end of my playthrough I began to ask myself that question; if the developers had included the decisions of his friends it is likely that would have influenced some people’s takeaway from the game and made it more difficult to truly ask themselves that intrinsic question.

As much as people want an epilogue, it really doesn't take much imagination to figure out what would probably happen. If you want someone to put it to words, I'll try my best.
Hero was probably disgusted and furious. He potentially assaulted Sunny for what he did. At best, he'd remove himself from the situation before doing so and refuse to look or speak to Sunny. Kel was probably horrified and in shock and would take time to process it. Aubrey gets really emotional, angry and crying, and likely walks away after yelling at him. Everyone is probably more forgiving of Basil because he didn't actually kill Mari, but Hero likely wants nothing to do with him and tolerates his presence at best. Following all of this, Sunny leaves town with his mom to whatever new town they moved to. Sunny possibly never speaks to any of them ever again, aside from maybe Basil, but something else might happen. Basil may talk to Aubrey about what happened and point out to her that she could have killed him just as easily as Sunny killed Mari when she pushed him into the water. Aubrey could later call Sunny and forgives him. Kel is probably the only one willing to really associate with him ever again, but this would cause tension between him and Hero.
Though unlikely, things could get better. After enough time, everyone, even Hero, might fully forgive Sunny due to the fact that he was a little kid when he accidentally killed Mari. Their friendships are never the same after this, but it's the best possible outcome.

If we knew how Sunny’s friends reacted, it would make all that buildup to tell the truth feel like it wasn’t earned. Acceptance is something that you have to be content with yourself.

As for the pictures shown, I think it should have more symbolised shock instead of anger or disappointment, leaving the ending open. However I think it would have confused everyone into thinking that Aubrey, Hero and Kel were hinting at not forgiving Sunny, which is why they were removed maybe IMO.
As a side note, I feel like i'm one of the rare ones that thinks that the credits and music along it (before the bonus basil scene) confirms already that Sunny got to talk and got forgiven. I think the lyrics and the tone, more than just summarising that Sunny moves on and has confessed, actually confirms the fact that he's happy, which i think would be weird if all of your friends (minus Basil) hates you now and you're leaving them traumatised again with this revelation and got not reported to the police by them lol.
Also come on for the tree, pulling a simple lever with the rope is enough, specially when you're two and you have just to lift a girl that shouldn't weight much.

a detail in the true ending with us forgiving basil adds onto the good ending......its just sunny in the room, despite saying they will be together no matter what happens, they left after sunny told the truth (understandably)

I will admit I like omori I remember being kinda shocked about the truth and sunny going though his memories made me cry cause I was thinking that things used to be so happy for the group and than the day of the recital happened and the one part in otherworld after beating space boyfriend made my sad the first time around it was the music and going through the sentences that sunny remembers hearing from his friends made me sad cause it kinda reminded me of thoughts I have and I also like how omori is the final boss yeah it's that troupe of facing yourself but instead of it being like Oh no the final boss of the game is myself but they only make a appearance now it's we've been leveling up and playing as omori since the very beginning and now we are fighting him but yeah I also do understand about replaying the game cause you know the truth now you know about every main event in the game and now you have to do it all over again this hits in the heart with sweethearts castle because it's all mini games and puzzles now I don't mind puzzles in rpgs I really don't but when it's a puzzle that takes a long time to do it's annoying and really hurts when you wanna go though the game again oh yeah this also includes the Humphrey part of the game
Hey wow if you read all that i just wanna apologize for making this so long but when I like a game so much I can't help but make long comments like this

I'm confused at how EXP in Undertale doesn't work... I think it worked perfectly fine, and your argument in the video, "Literally why" doesn't really help me understand lol. can you explain what makes it bad?

@@lythough7749 it did the job of getting players to think about the monsters they killed. At the time, it was revolutionary... It's just not as special anymore because of how many times it's been repeated.

i didn’t get to play this game because it’s not on xbox anymore, but i had watched a video in 2021 that recapped the story (about 1 hour and 40 minutes). last month, i wanted to play the game because i knew it was good but i saw it wasn’t on xbox, and i had totally forgot i knew all of the story (i only vaguely remembered some scenes) so i watched the video again. And i cried so damn much (i had not cried when i first watched it). I believe it was because of a combination of factor. 1- It was basically my “second playthrough” because i remembered that sunny pushed mari, so i looked at it with a different point of view from the start. 2- The vídeo only talked about the story, so i got it all in one go, without the fights and all (only the ones where he fights his fears) and i didn’t have the gameplay divided through multiple days. 3- i was older, and thinking about death at a young age and seeing what it did to the friends at the start and throughout the game broke me. I also wanted to add that i thought the scene where sunny pushes mari was at the start (when he goes down the stairs) and when they go to the back of sunny’s house and say that she hang herself i balled my eyes out crying because i didn’t think it was suicide and when i saw that i was sure i got the “push thing” wrong.

i think its mainly important they didn't because the moment we see everyone's reaction to the truth would ruin the satisfaction of the ending, sunny and basil are finally at peace and seeing that all go to hell for a few moments kind of tarnishes it which is probably why they left it out so the ending could feel as happy as it could, it could feel bittersweet

I feel like it was a bit disappointing that we don't get to see the reactions to the truth, but the ending was more than I could ask for. I often felt myself shaking or my heart would race faster everytime something different happened, from music to imagery.

Coming from someone with bad overthinking and I RELATE with basil a lot, the ending without their reactions/what happens after the truth is revealed, reminds me of the endless possibilities I sometimes find myself in important choices I find myself in. You can see the characters having different reactions to the truth kinda like how you can think of different effects that might happen if you do/pick something. You may lose or make friends, lose a family members support/gain support ect

Sunny doesn’t know how they are going to react, that’s why we have the game, he so scared of their unknown reactions. it only makes sense for their reactions to stay unknown. to be uncertain and afraid, but do the right thing anyways.
