- There aren't many players who cause the NFL to change the rules because of their play, but there also aren't many players like Mel Blount. See Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Mel Blount's Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Speech from 1989.
Blount, the Steelers third round draft pick in 1970 out of Southern University, came into the NFL with everything a coach would want…size, speed, quickness, mental and physical toughness and a work ethic that came from growing up working on a farm in Valdosta, Georgia.
Blount arrived at Steelers training camp in 1975 with his head shaved, claiming it was to stay cool, but others convinced it was to give him a more menacing look on the field. It apparently worked as he had his best season and was named Associated Press NFL Defensive Player of the Year, finishing the year with 11 interceptions. He finished his career with 57 interceptions and two touchdowns and 13 fumble recoveries with two touchdowns.
Blount was named All-Pro four times and played in five Pro Bowls. He was a key part of the Steelers success in the 1970s, starting and playing a key role in all four Super Bowls during that decade.

Mel Blount has used his fame and his platform not to enrich himself, but to help others, to encourage others, to improve lives, and make this a better world. He was a Hall of Fame cornerback, but has been even better off the field in what Chuck Noll called, "his life's work."
Every quarterback in the NFL today should thank this man and pay him for making it easier for them to pass.
you mean they had to change the rules against the defense because of his physicality was making it too hard on offenses
The receivers even more! At 6/4” 200+lbs, and a CB?!? The man was a complete terminator in the secondary. So glad I have always been Steeler Nation.
**ABSOLUTE LEGEND**

What a Legend
Wow Mel came from humble upbringing and used his induction speech to talk about helping other people. Great football player and even better person.
You can make the case for mel blount being best cb ever...definitely top 5..when they change the rules because you were so dominant that says it all
What a great thing to say in 1989 about the Families and Kids. Funny how it is the same today. Great speech!!
Wow, Mel blount is so under rated as a player and human, he should a politician
One heck of a human being. Personally I would have hated to see his talents misused in politics though. Politics changes people and the opposing parties do nothing but working against obstructing the other party rather than working together for the people. Would hate to see Mel drug into that game.
I was in a placement right down the street from it as a teen
Go Steelers
