    As someone who grew up with oriental shorthairs and has a pair now, this list in mostly accurate. I don't think this list emphasizes enough just how talkative and demanding they can be. They also need a lot of play and interaction (like at least an hour a day per cat). Lastly, I've never known an oriental who got ear infections, but in my experience, they all have problems with their teeth and really need to have their teeth brushed every day to protect their health. All that said they're my absolute favorite breed, you can develop really deep bonds with them, they're very smart and hilariously funny. Absolutely not for everyone, but for some people, there couldn't be a better pet.

    I have a female OSH, & she is the sweetest, gentlest, most affectionate cat I’ve ever met. She’s chatty and loves to socialise with people, but equally she is content playing with her toys/games, shouting at the birds through the window, and napping whilst I’m out. She’s never shown any destructive behaviours (my velvet sofa is untouched), & she’s incredibly smart, friendly, & snuggly. She’s a little furry soul-mate.

    Longpost about my experiences :
    They are so emotionally responsive.
    If you want a deep bond with an intelligent and creative cat then these are for you.
    They demand the same attention and respect a small child would. I know that's a cliche but I can't stress it enough.
    They just wanna be into what you're into, which is very irritating when you're trying to do stuff, and if you shut them outside of the room they yeowl and barge in.
    But the rewards are big time. They are so into you, the bond is very deep and they are trainable and gentle puddins.

    • @nevadatan7323
      @nevadatan7323 Před rokem +1

      I went in hardcore: my first ever cats were uhh.. 3 siamese boys 😅
      What I've learned: get pet insurance early. I was _incredibly_ diligent with their health care, yet they accrued issues regardless.
      If you have self discipline, put the money aside self-funded account to avoid premiums then do so; however you WILL need it.
      All of mine have dental issues, despite diet changes, water additives, plaq-off powders etc.
      It's due to the elongated structure of their mouths and saliva not being held it *similar to greyhounds, which I've also had in past)
      So my big regret was not getting them into toothbrushing as kittens.
      I managed to train them later on my getting smaller double ended brushes and stroking their whiskers as I fussed em, getting gradually closer to the lipline each time (took weeks)
      Eventually they liked the front and incisors being brushed but couldn't get right into their mouths.
      So far, by my kittenhood error it's cost me about £3000+
      and it was very sad to see them in discomfort because you do make such an emotional bond that you feel very responsible for their care.

    • @nevadatan7323
      @nevadatan7323 Před rokem +1

      Fun facts:
      Ine of my cats ate a wire pipe cleaner and had its belly operated on to extract it.
      They suffer with pica (eating non food objects) a lot. They suck on blankets chew on wool and swallow the strands in lengths.
      They are also kleptonaniacs. They steal and rub off with items. Socks, panties, packs of cleaning wipes, packs of batteries....
      They get sunburned coz of their thin fur on their ears and noses, so get a babysafe spf *another thing I would train from kittenhood*
      They have a risk of kidney and heart probs.

    • @nevadatan7323
      @nevadatan7323 Před rokem +1

      And they sexually mature earlier than other cats.
      One of my boys was a runt, and was unable to go in to be neutered at 3 months due to low weight.
      He's neutered now but the hormones are flowin'..
      As such, he's a rampant sexfiend who unashamedly humps any thing fluffy in sight. Cuddles, his brother, my leg....😂

    • @nevadatan7323
      @nevadatan7323 Před rokem +2

      They're amazing oddballs. I mean, I love cats. But these weirdos are more than cats.

    • @nevadatan7323
      @nevadatan7323 Před rokem +1

      Don't get 3. Oh god.
      Get 2 as they need that social connection, but ensure they are different sex (and neutered!)
      Same littermates only. I have one OG Bigboy and his subsequent brothers from a different little
      and it was immensely traumatic for him to have the other two introduced. He loves them now (the v. femme needy one moreso than runty sexfiend)
      But he was totally damaged and destroyed, so much so that he was hospitalised on the first night. He has recovered, but his character has never been the same.

    Btw, I think this is a great video, as I see many folks wanting orientals, siamese and Sphynx mostly for their looks etc, without realising they have certain needs and are very hands on.
    Like you see many celebrities getting these, but ending up rehoming them because they don't get enough attention and proper care.

      Yes! Thanks for saying this! Oriental shorthairs are NOT everyone's cup of tea. One of my 2 Orientals can meow with every single breath for 20+ minutes straight if I ignore her while I'm trying to work. She's loud enough to the point where I can't think, nonetheless I love her to bits and we've learned ways of managing her demands and fulfilling her needs. Both our Orientals need tons of attentions and basically rule our home life. I wouldn't have it any other way, but I'm certain there are lots of people (maybe the majority) that wouldn't enjoy it.

    We own two Siamese [ now aged 15 ], same personality so we have no issue in our house with Oriental Shorthair types. Basically if you want a docile lap cat that's high maintenance, get a Persian or another long haired breed like the Maine Coon, but, if you want a Cat that's vocal and will interact with you and want you to interact with them all day, get a Siamese type.

    This is a wonderful video and goes beyond Oriental Shorthair cats (they are adorable!), but any pet in general. A pet is a lifelong commitment. Each has their individual needs and personality. And while some cat may be less maintenance with grooming, that's not always the case -- most cats (even shorthair tabbies) need brushing daily, pet wipes to clean their eyes if they have allergies, and as they get older, they may need extra care with litter box issues. Pets are family and should be loved as such. 😻❤

    We have 3 rescue cats that could fit in this category, though their ears are not as outsized. They do not have Siamese coloring, but have the face structure, and behavior. One is a small cat, black and white. One is long and tall but slim and lean. He is orange tabby and white. And the third is not yet full grown but looks to be pretty big and is all black. He is the only one with crossed eyes, though they are not too bad. So what I would like to call them is Classic oriental short-haired, just as they are modern and classic Siamese. It is not likely that they are purebred, but this is the best description I have found. One who was a stray (the other two were rescue kittens) is the one with anxiety issues. He is on medication to help with that but he will scent the house when he is especially anxious. He also has chronic bronchitis, which is common to Siamese type cats because of how vocal they are. The anxious cat is also the most outgoing. Even when we have the grandkids over, 8 of them from 12 to 2 years old, he has to be in the middle of them. The female black and white is elderly, but still wants to be out with the family, and although she is not as outgoing as our orange guy, she does let the kids pet her. The black young guy pops in and out. We also have two cobby style tabbing. They hide when the kids come.

    Do they still get anxious from being left alone from their owners if you have other animals in the house? I have 2 dogs and 2 cats inside

      No, they are fine when together with other cats. Although especially when they are young they need their cuddle and playtime, so if you work everyday long days, this might not be your cat.
