- www.gilhedley.com In this video I offer several little known details about the temporalis muscle tissue and the implications for palpation and intra-oral work. To see comparative on camera dissection of temporalis m. tissues and the other muscles of mastication, Explorer members of my site can watch Anatomy from A to Z Course 13, enjoy!

Wow, Gil and Leslie, two great anatomy teachers getting this video out to us! Thank you, Gil, for clarifying the anatomy of the temporalis tendon. As a bodyworker who does intraoral work, the insights gained from your dissections have improved my work.
I’d love to see an episode on the pterygoids. So many people suffer from jaw tension and pain, and so few bodyworkers address it intraorally.
And Leslie, I’ve also taken a class with you, grounded in practical, down-to-earth body wisdom. Thank you! You guys are getting my week off to a great start! ❤
Pterygoids, good idea!! I appreciate your interest, it is most gratifying to me when what I share translates into service for folks in distress, thank you for bringing the work to those who need it :)
I love your lessons and turns of phrase: Jaws I, Mr. Bones, SZM-and-don't chew on your fingers!-all in service of making anatomy so real. Thank you!
Haha thanks Stephanie, it helps that I spent many years keeping it real teaching homeschool!
It is INSANE the things I learn from you, Gil! If only I were young again, I'd be one of your most devoted students! I love learning and you have made it so much fun and easier too! I love that you color code things. It helps me to learn better. 💕
Oh you have plenty of youth to tap into no doubt, and I am a most devoted teacher! Lots more stuff on my site GypsyRose, I hope to see you there!
So helpful to understand the temporalis muscle better with this 'SZM' portion. Great for Craniosacral therapy mouth work. And decades ago I dislocated my jaw in a car accident and had horrible TMJ pain for many years. I would have loved to have know things I know now then. Absolutely we should all be empowered to do self-massage, including sticking our fingers in our mouths!!
Ouch, that sounds like a painful accident, yeesh...and I am all for encouraging self exploration...bargain therapy!
Thank you so much Gil. Love your videos
I'm glad you enjoy them, thank you for watching!
Me. Shoving my finger in my mouth palpating the … insertion (?) of the Temporalis muscle ! Such good teaching ! THANK YOU 😉🥲👊🏼😉❤️
Ahh good, figuring it out yourself, and, careful, those choppers are sharp!
Thank You Gil! Took a course from you in 2017 and am still learning fr you!
I appreciate your continuing interest!
This is so clarifying, thank you!
Yay!
Thank you! So that is why I am palpating motion of the sphenoid with Jaw movement. With some it is the most effective way to start a stuck cranio-sacral motion,
Perhaps! Certain jaw movements will definitely implicate leverage on the sphenoid bone!
Wonderful! Thank you Gil!
Thanks for watching Sandra!
Fabulous content! That clears up some questions I had!
I'm glad to hear it Dawn, thank you for watching!
You make learning anatomy so fun! Thank you.
I'm having fun, I'm glad you are too!
That spot at the end of the vid and we could also feel Inferior Alveolar Nerve!
The inferior alveolar nerve actually runs through the mandible, that deserves a video of it's own some day!
Amazing!
Thank you Angelika!
Gil,
My uncle is 76 , he has awful mouth troubles
That dries his lips
And gives him awful headaches
But
Top of head ....
I will say to him to check its not his jaw causing the pain
It causing him so much discomfort
Thanks Gil

Sounds like unc needs a good physio! Thanks for being here Marguerite!
@@somanaut
I will say to him... they are so hard to find.... but I think may know where to go,
The GAA , Irish football
Has got some ....I will send him to them, in his local area ...they will know
Where do get help.
Thanks Gil

Thanks Gil, who knew hey?! So the temporalis/SZM is actually not as painful on direct pressure as that trickster pterygoid behind it.
That might depend on who's poking and how haha (ouch!)! Part of the irritation regarding the pterygoids can also have to do with the fact that there are several branches of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve either poking between the lateral and medial pterygoids, underlying or overlying them, not so many folks are aware of that nest of goodness there, might be a good topic for other videos!
Would the SZM be a synergist or antagonist to the lateral pterygoid's ability to drive contralateral mandibular trusion?
Hmm that's a fun one to think about, I vote synergist!
👍🏼
:)
I've had RMT suggest it was not normal to have such a tense muscle there (as you describe, it was the SZM) and to self massage it - I find it as strong feeling when my teeth are clenched as when my jaw is wide open - no difference. I suppose as long as the jaw does open fully it's normal!?
Hi Carol! Any muscle tissue that is seeming to be very robustly toned even when you are not "doing" anything may be calling for some attention for a variety of reasons, as it is expending energy without accomplishing work. That being said, the most accessible portion of this tissue when you put your finger on it is actually a very fibrous silvery white tendon, which will indeed always feel very dense, so it may not be that your muscle tissue is overtoned at all, but rather that you are palpating that fibrous tendonous portion of it, hard to know without stickin' my own finger in your mouth but that's my best guess!
@@somanaut I think it's the tendon, it feels like tendons you can palpate elsewhere (hamstrings back of knees for eg). Thanks for your answer, and I look even more forward to meeting you in person one day! 😆
👏🏻😊
:)
not me shoving my finger in the back of my mouth and feeling up my zygomatic to find the relationship..
Haha yes, gently!
Stress storing muscle
Can be!
I learn from my mentor that muscles holds emotions like psoas holds fear , diaphragm holds arrogance, masseter holds anger etc .
what's your view on this ?

Haha it does work sometimes!
