Aaron Blaise (the film's co-director) told as a story in one of his live streams about when Joaquin Phoenix was recording for this particular scene, after Sitka's been killed (Around 2:57). Most of you know about when Joaquin's older brother River died in '93 and how it scarred him for life; (BTW the filmmakers had never known about River's death beforehand.) They basically set the sequence up for him by saying: "Your brother had drowned and your in a panic searching for him." Needless to say, after 3 minutes of intense acting and enduring post-traumatic stress, Joaquin was crying his eyes out near the end of the session. Aaron said he was so taken by his acting that they didn't even say "cut". In the middle of recording Joaquin asked if they were gonna stop, while choking back his sobs. The recording was then put into an early cut of the film and when first shown to the test screening, the response said it was way too heavy for viewers to hear or witness; so they kept the first half of it in. Just from listening to Aaron speak of that experience, goes to shows that what Joaquin is capable of as an actor, even when he's just placed in a booth standing in front of a microphone. He is able to take such raw emotion and converts it into something so intuitive that it's actually fucking painful to even hear about it. If your wondering why Sitka did not try and run It’s because he had to keep the spear in the ice so it would not come loose and the ice would not crack the entire place
I thought it was because he was injured and exhausted. I mean, he got knocked down by a grown bear. That's enough to easily at least break some ribs. So he used his last strength to save his brothers.
True but I mean they are adults and he is the oldest so they have probably been through rough stuff and Sitka the most cause he is the oldest and his bones had more time to become stronger so that’s why I think it’s because he had to keep his spear in the ice cause the spear could fall on the first big crack and now there is just and 1 crack and they all have to fight the bear with no spears at all
This scene actually shows why Kenai deserves his totem of love. He was the most heartbreaking of his brother’s death, he is actually the one who love his brothers the most and even his terrible decision of killing the bear was out of pure love for his brother.
it's sad because Sitka is trying to fight the bear but he's distracted at the fact that Kenai is trying to pull up denahi from the hole and is worried that they will both fall his deeply love for both of his brother's is amazing
I love the screen shake during this scene. It really puts the viewer into a state of alertness and anxiousness. It helps intensify the the mood and fighting.
What was scary about this scene is how Koda's mother eyes were like purely black, and how well animated her attacks were. Like a pure beast from Nature. Not to mention how Sitka see no options but sacrificing himself for his brothers. But then when Kenai is a bear, every Bear has more human looking eyes, in a more accurate way. So the Song of "Take a Look Through my eyes" can have another meaning.
This was my favourite movie when I was a kid. Used to watch it on repeat, never made me cry. As an adult, this dang movie hits differently, I cry just reading the plot. It's so sad, but still very powerful, and arguably still my favourite movie.
As an adult you understand that Denahi was actually blaming himself for Sitkas death, they all ought to have known that a bear took the basket with the fish, and that it’d be unwise for Kenai to go searching for it, yet he annoyed him to the point where he felt like going and sorting it out on his own, if he didn’t rev his little brother up ( kenai was young and immature at this point ) they would’ve gone searching for whatever food they had left, and would likely have stayed out of the bears way and salvaged what they could, but the way the situation was handled by both parties is what resulted in sitkas death, and with denahi being the instigator, he actually blames himself, and when he believes kenai to be dead as well, he falls into a deep state of anti-socialism and depression, and devotes what’s left of his life to avenging both of his brothers against what he believe to be the bear who was present at both of their deaths, but doesn’t realise it’s kenai
This movie is so underrated. The music was incredible and this was a heartbreaking loss too. Like the choir you can hear after they struggle in the river was beautiful
This scene always give me chills, the entire sequence is full of emotion and dramatic/action essence, but the part from 00:58 to 1:00 is just preciously perfect referring to cinematographic elements. It fits so well with the rule of thirds on both sides (Kenai and Sitka on the right, and Denahi fighting with the bear on the left), the proportions of the scenario is so accurate by showing us the immensity of the glacier in which the events arise (so imposing but fragile at the same time) and the color palette is charming by constructing a tundra atmosphere... an irrefutable 10/10.
While it's not perfect, I do think the emotional moments and heartfelt aspects of Brother Bear felt more genuine than most of Disney's recent animated features (except Coco which almost ripped your heart out).
agreed, its definitely the middle part with all the cartoon animals, that the story goes into cruise mode, but this beginning, the part where kenai learns he killed kodas mom, and his fight with his brother at the end are very exceptional scenes
It’s still interesting to point out that Koda’s mother had black eyes before her eyes turned normal at the end when she was a spirit. Which can probably still signified/shown what Kenai seen Koda’s mother as a heartless monster. Until later on he realized that she wasn’t really a heartless monster after all.
Who agrees with me that Disney should make a real live Brother Bear film? Just imagine watching a real bear and natives. It would be sooo good. I can see it taking place at Alaska.
E Franklin97 hey I respect your opinion but I’m gonna stick with mine. I’m not a huge fan of Disney either especially when they remade The Lion King, Jumbo, Aladdin, Lady and the Tramp and Beauty and the Beast they were all so bad or just average. Why I want Disney to remake this is because I think they really pulled it off when they remade The Jungle Book, that movie was a huge success and it has a really good story line and the animals looked soo great and realistic. Brother Bear in my opinion has a good story line and a beautiful culture of how Natives do their lives. BTW they are gonna remake a Brother Bear film in 2021, Jon Favreau is gonna direct it.
I wonder if when they were recording this part, Joaquin Phoenix pretended it was River he was calling after to really get the most out of that performance. Because he could relate to Kenai in that moment.
The co director said during an interview that during the part where Kenai (Joaquin) was looking for Sitka, Joaquin was bawling his eyes out and they ended up cutting part of it because of how intense it was. Long story short yes, this part really effected him badly. And after rewatching the film now that I’m older and I was aware about his brother, this scene hits extremely hard😔
His name was *Jason Raize.* He rose to prominence in the late '90s as 'Simba' in the original Broadway production of _The Lion King._ In fact, he killed himself (February 3, 2004) just three months after _Brother Bear_ was released in theaters (November 1, 2003) and less than a month before the Oscars (February 29, 2004). _Brother Bear_ was nominated for Best Animated Feature.
Where did he go If we're lucky far away (Falls of a mountain) Rushes up the mountain to save him That changed quickly Also Sitka's look he gave when the ice was breaking was like him saying I love you both and My Time has Come
It was a ritual for my brother and I to rewatch the brother bear and lion king every year since the year it released . It still shocks me to this day that this movie is not as popular as it should be.The storyline was so unique 😢
It’s the ending that really gets me. When Kenai is desperately searching for Sitka, in denial of his death while Denahi just automatically knows that he’s gone and is silent with grief.
That's literally the entire point of the movie. Sitka? Koda's mom? All his fault. He was an ignorant dumbass at the start and throughout all of this he learned to be more responsible while also gaining the perspective of an older sibling by taking care of his own ignorant dumbass of a little brother, and by the time he's finally wised up he was forgiven.
Technically Sitka wasn’t killed by the bear, he sacrificed himself to save his brothers, he wouldn’t have had to do that if Kenai didn’t just let it be and tried to track down the bear
I think that after Joker, this film must have been probably the second most difficult shooting for Joaquin Phoenix. Considering that he lost his brother just like Kenai, it was probably very intense and heartbreaking for him to play in a film who dealt with the subject of losing someone you love. I think that this scene where Kenai is crying for his brother, not accepting his death was a tragic recall of what Phoenix truly suffers.
oh wow i haven't seen this since i was a kid. that was a horrible death scene! I mean it was brilliantly done but what a horrifying way to go Disney really be pulling out all the stops!
God I wish we were able to understand these brothers more and get more of a backstory on them. I think they did a great job with setting up the relationship between the brothers at the beginning. I love this movie but the first act was definitely stronger and I almost wish he didn’t turn into a bear instead was granted to speak to animals or could shapeshift into one so he’d still be giving the responsibility of watching over Koda, idk I just love his human design so much. Also the beginning was a lot darker and it feels like some of the middle parts of the movie was trying to remind you it’s a kids movie to make up for it and they over did it…
To me, the first 20 minutes of Brother Bear is amazing. It's emotional, more mature, and really strong. But I feel like the movie goes downhill once Kenai gets turned into a bear
Joaquin Phoenix recently lost his brother, River, at the time of registering the vocals for this scene. They say that working with him to make this scene was intense, for both the crew and him, which had to probably suffer a lot to deliver his most authentic, raw emotions at the idea of his character losing a brother. I can't even imagine how truly intense It must have been on the studio.
I remember this movie, it was made the year we moved from my (birth) homeland of Texas. That movie has to be among the most deep movies I watched as a kid! Little did I know I basically was watching my future. Like Kenai I became resentful for losing my friends and not being able to understand people where we moved to but it gradually got better over the years cumulating in a big turn around while in college serving on senate. Much like how Kenai had to learn to become a man through his experience with being a bear. His life had changed drastically when he became a bear, my life changed drastically when I moved from Texas and I learned what the toxic behaviors do to the mentality of humans and the ways to alleviate them. I am close to being a leader once again and will help in major ways with what I encountered over the years. I learned how to be a man through leadership where as Kenai learned to be a man by being a bear. Brother bear is certainly one of the classic films from the Disney golden age! Stay blessed everyone.
see, I hate the fact the critcs rank this so low saying that the plot is genreic.....BRUH! This movie has so much meaning to it, loved this movie when i was little, and as i got older and rewatched it couple times, i start to understand the main plot, the focus of it. the main focus was of course respecting others, including nature it self, because the animals are more afraid of us then we are of them, like in the one scene where kenai and koda saw the ancient writings on the rocks. And the other was not to hold a strong grudge to the past. So i dont know how the heck fricking sisterly love from frozen can trump brotherly love....that makes no sense XD. plus I bet one of these days, i dunno when, this movie will start becoming a popularity, like how Surfs up is doing now.
Giving him benefit of the doubt, where he found Bear Kenai was the same place as the (presumed dead) Human Kenai and precisely 1 bear. Kenai is gone. There's 1 bear. it's sad because Sitka is trying to fight the bear but he's distracted at the fact that Kenai is trying to pull up denahi from the hole and is worried that they will both fall his deeply love for both of his brother's is amazing
Yeah he loves them very much
I can’t believe Koda’s mom survived that
Well she’s a bear
Bears are very capable swimmers after all
@@kingkobrajoe7 coming back to the surface is not the issue, it's the drop down
How though? Isnt it shallow waters? Or is it that bears are just tough when falling and can overall be more enduring interms of gravity?
Jordan Davis 21 Can’t That
I love the screen shake during this scene. It really puts the viewer into a state of alertness and anxiousness. It helps intensify the the mood and fighting.
Knowing the story of Joaquin and River Phoenix makes this even sadder when you hear Joaquins voice while trying to find Sitka
Mufasa and Sitka. Disney deaths that shook me to my core.
It fits so well with the rule of thirds on both sides (Kenai and Sitka on the right, and Denahi fighting with the bear on the left), the proportions of the scenario is so accurate by showing us the immensity of the glacier in which the events arise (so imposing but fragile at the same time) and the color palette is charming by constructing a tundra atmosphere... an irrefutable 10/10.
this movie is so slept on
Kenai was pretty brave for trying to save his brother from falling the ice glacier
Yeah, it shows that he really cares about his brother
@@karenbotbol4259 There’s being mad,then there’s killing an innocent Bear.

Kenai throwing these things got Sitka killed for being reckless
It’s still interesting to point out that Koda’s mother had black eyes before her eyes turned normal at the end when she was a spirit. Which can probably still signified/shown what Kenai seen Koda’s mother as a heartless monster. Until later on he realized that she wasn’t really a heartless monster after all.
Wow I just found out Jason Raize (Denahi’s voice actor) committed suicide in 2004 😢 RIP JASON 😭💔
Who agrees with me that Disney should make a real live Brother Bear film? Just imagine watching a real bear and natives. It would be sooo good. I can see it taking place at Alaska.
Honestly, I think Disney should just leave the film as it is.
Hmm....that wouldn't actually look that bad.
Gabe Zilla For Kobe 8-24 Nah they’ll ruin it
Ami Alex nah they won’t. If they can pull off the Jungle Book than they can for sure pull off Brother Bear
0:46 Denahi: Hey, bear, come on. 0:47 Over here. 0:48 Come on, bear, come this way.
This movie makes you appreciate perspective more than any other Disney movie
I wonder if when they were recording this part, Joaquin Phoenix pretended it was River he was calling after to really get the most out of that performance. Because he could relate to Kenai in that moment.
The co director said during an interview that during the part where Kenai (Joaquin) was looking for Sitka, Joaquin was bawling his eyes out and they ended up cutting part of it because of how intense it was. Long story short yes, this part really effected him badly. And after rewatching the film now that I’m older and I was aware about his brother, this scene hits extremely hard😔
@@marionette4302 I actually heard about that too recently. You are so right. It does.
Bear: behind Sitka, ready to attack
Denahai: throws rocks with right hand
Also Denahai: has a spear in his left hand.
I didn’t notice that
Denahi never intended to kill or hurt the bear, he tries to live by his totem (wisdom) and hurting animals is not the way.

What’s sad as well is Denihai’s voice actor took his own life only a couple years after this film was made. 😢
Jordan Davis 21 Sad Well Was

I thought I could recognise Kenai..... it’s JOKER!!! 😱
Joaquin Phoenix is his name.
Gregorius Pujianto
Yes
So Kenai is joker, Denahi is stage Simba (RIP) and Sitka is Aladar and Adult Aang
Wait what
Eiju urushihara
The person who voices Kenai is the man who plays the Joker on the 2019 film
It was a ritual for my brother and I to rewatch the brother bear and lion king every year since the year it released . It still shocks me to this day that this movie is not as popular as it should be.The storyline was so unique 😢
Anyone else noticed the sound of an eagle after the Glacier fell and when they were screaming for Sitka?
Yeah. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was Sitka calling out to them.
It's really sad that the day Kenai got his totem he lost his brother
The hardest part to watch is the eye contact between them when Sitka decides to break the ice and Kenai and Denahi slowly realize what’s happening
God it's even more sad when you realized they died at a similar fate, Sitka was just protecting his brothers, and she was just protecting Koda.
It’s the ending that really gets me. When Kenai is desperately searching for Sitka, in denial of his death while Denahi just automatically knows that he’s gone and is silent with grief.
My oldest cousin recently passed and now his younger siblings don’t have him for guidance anymore. Every time I talk to them I think of this scene :(
All this loss and tragedy because Kenai wouldn't take a simple task seriously....
I Agree and it’s all his fault Sitka died
@@ollsmz9887 Kenai was just excited to get *his* totem he wasn’t trying to get Sitka killed.
Jordan Davis 21 all And Task
Technically Sitka wasn’t killed by the bear, he sacrificed himself to save his brothers, he wouldn’t have had to do that if Kenai didn’t just let it be and tried to track down the bear
1:47 Poor bear:-( she's running for her life!!
Why Kenai is crying when Sitka dies?
oh wow i haven't seen this since i was a kid. that was a horrible death scene! I mean it was brilliantly done but what a horrifying way to go Disney really be pulling out all the stops!
Back when disney had balls
It hurts when the Bear was never intended to kill them. She just want to protect her child.....
Brother bear is such an underrated movie definitely one of my favorites!
Most nostalgic movie of all time
Cast:
Sitka - D.B. Sweeney
Kenai - Joaquin Phoenix
Denahi - Jason Raize
To my 1st grader mind, this was the first time I was introduced to the concept of sacrificing your own life for someone else.
2:56 Denahi let’s find him!! Sitka Sitka where are you Sitka!! 😢😭
There was actually 3 minutes of Joaquin crying and screaming his heart out that was cut out around there.
I looked up the transcript and he says “Help us find you!”
True mom bear: Dang it today is my bad day I got hit by 4 rocks and had to fight people and lost my cub and got plugged into ice cold water
I don't devalue the relationship between Kenai and Koda, but I would prefer the story to stay with the three brothers.
yeah fr@@kiduk-yt1tu
Disney was so good back then. Freaking love Brother Bear
Isn't it eerie that Kenai is watching his brother Sitka die while his voice actor, Joaquin Phoenix, watched his brother River die?
That's the reason why I'm always wondering how the HELL he got through this movie
Can we just talk about how Sitka managed to split a glacier in half with just a spear
I was broken when Sitka died. And I felt bad for Denahi because he lost both his brothers
As a kid who loved animals and natural history this was one of my favorites growing up💯
I actually watched this the other day, and I cried at this scene that I called both of my brothers telling them I love em.
This movie was my childhood
Sitka looks like qui gon jinn
i always made that connection
Oh yeah its true from Star Wars The Phantom Menace
My brother just said the same thing to me when we rewatched this the other day
I knew he reminds me of someone!
see, I hate the fact the critcs rank this so low saying that the plot is genreic.....BRUH!
One of my all time favorites and underrated animated films
Bro Sitka death hit on a whole different level 😔 😔
I like how denahi mistakes one bear for another, clearly koda's mom was bigger than kenai even in bear form.
Giving him benefit of the doubt, where he found Bear Kenai was the same place as the (presumed dead) Human Kenai and precisely 1 bear. Kenai is gone. There's 1 bear. He put it together as best as someone could when they're seeing red.
Though, to be my own Devil's advocate, Kenai was smaller, scrawnier, had a different facial shape, different fur color, and is male. Him being a bear was literally their only shared trait.
@@luislatinoman7055 so u get my point
@@lucasgreen9821 Yeah. I'mma have to agree with you. Denahi may be wise, but dude's pretty stupid. I won't call him brain dead just yet because once again, he's seeing red, but he's definitely stupid.
