  • In this interview Jacinta Price provides fresh insight into the best way to help Indigenous children attain equal opportunities and experiences. She advocates for Indigenous adoption and cautions that this would not be another "second stolen generation".
Jacinta Nampijinpa Price is deputy mayor of Alice Springs and Country Liberal Senate candidate for NT. She works in the NT to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, to improve the lives of Indigenous kids and to tackle the tough issues that face her community, like domestic violence. She pushes against political correctness and stands up for free speech.
Jacinta also works as the Indigenous program director at the Centre for Independent Studies, and is a regular on Sky News.

So I guess you have to define what being well-educated means to you. then answer the question is how should we live life

And what kind of "support" do they need? How about mothers and fathers and not just aunties and uncles. The core of the aboriginal's problems is the same as the black people's problems both in Africa and America...rampant promiscuity...so that children grow up fatherless and have no one stable to teach them how to value themselves and others...and how to deal with their emotions , especially ANGER.

Cultures rise and fall in history, and a wise culture keeps restores and protects the memories of the past. Tell me haw anyone can hope to live in isolation today. Does that mean we just dust our hands off and leave them to their own devices. Here in Canada they want us to pay to teach their children their culture, so why don't they. Why is Canadian entertainment second to the US, they have a more powerful culture. That's the evolution of the world, if you don't keep up you die off.

      How does the song go?
      Short memories.
      Do you need reminding?
Anderson was part of a government that railed against the "black armband" view of history.
That Australia needed not be ashamed of its colonial past.
It was a time of revisionist white washing of history as part of the culture wars conducted by the conservatives under Howard.
The media supported Howard, by this time Murdoch was well on the way to being utterly partisan in his support for conservatism.
There was active opposition to the very idea of the stolen generations.
To have Anderson now nodding his head sagely to Jacinta Price who they now need to counter the yes to the voice vote is frankly sickening in it's hypocrisy.
      Learn your history.

My elderly aunt was a nurse (in a NSW country hospital) during the 1950s.
She has related that on a number of occasions babies were brought in to the hospital who had been left exposed on ant nests to die. They had ant bites all over them (you can imagine).
According to her, without exception, they were 'half-caste' (a horrible term) ... and for the local full-blood aborigines, this was their method for getting rid of unwanted babies.
Even when she related this only recently, she had tears in her eyes.

We talked about the apology, she said it meant nothing because the people who should have done the apologising were all dead. She had her own children, was fostering other people's children and living a caring life even nursing her husband who was suffering from lung disease. I had never met her husband but he must have had white skin because I asked if he was aboriginal and she told me straight out "I don't know, it's something we never worried about.". She sounds like a brave woman. And her foster carers are to blame. I have fostered children, and the problem is now the opposite. Too many Aboriginal children left in abhorant families because social workers are frightened to put them in care. In university I mentioned to my tutor that I had gone to boarding school with Aboriginal girls and I had learnt much of their language and culture. The tutor said they must have been "stolen" I explained that like me they had gone to the local primary school until 12, and our father's worked in the same mine. The closest highschool was four hours away so our father's paid for us to board. And besides we all went home most weekends. She said she would fail me if I spoke of this again. This has left me very skeptical.

The abuse is also happening in the homes of aboriginal children! At the hands of family members. Also alcohol abuse.
Why aren’t there any aboriginal teaching groups? With the amount of funding that these businesses are getting from the government in grants, why are young aboriginal kids not learning about their Dreamtime, how to live off of the land? How to go about a walkabout, hunting? Spear throwing? Identifying animals via their tracks?
If there’s such a concern about loosing their culture, why aren’t these kids involved in this? Why aren’t the elders our their educating their youth? So they have value and an understanding of their race and culture and mean something to be part of their mob, so they break the cycle of alcohol abuse, do,estimated violence, car theft, property damage etc so they don’t end up in jails?!!
Instead they are told they are victims and can do as they please! No wonder they behave as they do!
They are loosing their own race but blaming white man for it.

The government can only do so much, but if you don't have parents who prioritise things like education, personal responsibility, reading, conversation , good morals etc etc. then the child will be at a huge disadvantage This applies to all children, not just aboriginal or other ethnicities. when a culture wants to cling to the past they get left behind by the world in general, its so important for the leaders of a country to keep an eye to the future, or at least ensure the the universities keep up. The lost generation was Australia wanting to bring the locals up to date, and the children's parents turning a blind eye to progress and interfering with their own children. Like it or not if the indigenous people refuse to teach their children about the real world the children will suffer and if they move into a city will suffer from culture shock. While traditions and lore is essential for growth and a sense of belonging, by refusing to see what the world is doing is turning a blind eye to the truth. If a parent in Sydney refused to send their child to school the system would do what it could to ensure that the child would get that education. People who refuse to educate their children and then cry foul when someone does is pitiful. Understanding your past and preparing for the present and future do not go against each other. The ball is in the court of the parents, do you want your children to succeed, or to wallow in the past crying I'm a victim.

There comes a point when tradition is just another way of saying "Habit" Tradition just sounds noble and uplifting while habit sounds nasty.
But both can mean the same thing.
The ancestors of the Aborigines invaded these empty lands thousands and thousands of years ago, arriving as stone age hunter gatherers. And when the rest of the planet discovered these lands, full of easily obtained natural resources, they were still stone age hunter gatherers. Is that something to be proud of? Nope.
They need to grow up and take some responsibility instead of blaming everyone else.

Many years ago my now ex-husband and I went through the initial stages of fostering a child. We went to an orientation meeting and we’re told, by the lecturer, about a baby that was found in a cot with a sheet of plywood nailed over the top to cage him/her in. It had been so long since the last nappy change that there were maggots and cockroaches in the nappy. The current system expects foster carers to care for these children and then give them back to their biological parents. This is something I knew I could not do, so I asked about adoption and was told it no longer exists in this country unless you are a relative of the child in question. This is a direct result of the backlash of the stolen generation and mistreatment of children in orphanages. The government has thrown the baby out with the bath water. Aboriginal children are not the only children at risk in our society and until someone has the intestinal fortitude to remove them from harm it will continue to happen. Throwing money at the problem, and continually missing the mark, will never achieve anything.

One of the issues is that as a collective group their academic levels (that's the most polite way I can put it) are lower than most other ethnic groups within Australia. Finding success in a developed advanced technology-based economy education and problem solving is very important, and unfortunately indigenous people fall behind as a group (exceptions occur of course, interviewee noted)
Another problem is that indigenous people are counted as one group, despite being of many different languages and genetic makeup - the majority being mixed race. Why are we trying to lift people in western Sydney who have a marginally lower income than the rest of the region when the real issue is in remote communities with full blood (or close to it) people?
We see Jacinta Price as indigenous, but she's as much a European as she is aboriginal. The optics and way society perceives the entire thing are so strange, to me at least
