It’s commonly brought up about Terraria’s melee class that most of the weapons are closer to something like a ranger or mage weapon, having projectiles that allow you to keep your distance from enemies. So in this video, I try to beat Terraria with True Melee only. This might be one of the hardest Terraria challenges out there. This is gonna be immensely difficult. And I’m doing it in master mode.

Me and my sister are doing a run and at first we found only 1 and she let me keep it, when I started fishing for sky crates we got 6 more out of other crates 😐

I'll be the lone island that is a counterexample, because I'm doing a Master summoner run right now (first time I'm devoting a run entirely to summoner even) - I'm currently prepping for the Wall but my mind is wishy-washy about whether I wanna go get the Terraprisma or not when the Empress becomes available
I wanna at least pick up the Kaleidoscope from her, but I've never actually even attempted the Empress once before
@@lordmarshmal_0643 you can basically cheese the empress pretty easy, just takes some prep work and a bit of luck. The best way I’ve found to take her out is with a longass minecart track across the top of the world with two layers to it (though with a bit of practice/luck you can use just one)
Get yourself set up with hallowed armor and as much damaging accessories as you can get (mechanical glove components like emblems and stuff stack with each other, don’t worry about movement since the minecart will do all that for you), and for your weapon use a Ruthless-forged sanguine staff (picked up from the nautilus you can fish up during a blood moon)
The strat: basically just keep smacking her with your whip whenever she teleports close, the bats will take care of the rest, and wait to trigger phase 2 until after you bounce off the world border to minimize the chance you’ll bounce back into an attack
At full speed, the minecart will outrun all of her attacks except for the one that traces your path, but that’s where the hallowed armor comes in (cross necklace can also be used to give more leeway). Jump right before the lance hits you, you’ll land in the middle of them, just jump back out right as your i-frames are about to run out
Presto bingo, if all goes well you’ll have a Terraprisma in no time. Might take a couple tries to get it all down pat (luck is always a factor ofc), but it’s way easier than trying to fight her cheeseless
As someone who has done infernum mode with true melee, this is in fact true

@@lordmarshmal_0643 I find EOL pretty easy but daytime EOL is insane, if you do decide to beat her I'd love to see that if you can record it
Pro tip: next time you want a golf cart, put the golf holes at the bottom of your hellavator then just hit the ball in from the surface.
That's how i got it, it's a randomly good mount considering how "early" Game you can get it.
I got the horse from the Zoologist, almost as fast as the Unicorn. :V and much, MUCH easier to get
@@zero45Gabrielhorse sucks, it's bothered near as fast as golf cart and definatly not even close to blessed apple. And on top if all that it is only slightly faster than hermes boots and has horrible acceleration
@@user-mf4uo9ox2y you can just mount while dashing and it's more than fast enough to help with early hardmode bosses, plus, no farming, so the guy you responded to is correct.
but i'm honestly curious, why hate on the horses? they have their uses.
@@gabrielfranzini977 the horses require almost as much farming as the golf cart because you need to actually encounter tons of different creatures, whereas for the golf cart you just need to set it up over your hellavatore and farm for like 3 minuts. And the golf cart Is way faster, the horse mounts are only slightly faster than hermes boots whereas the golf cart is like twice as fast. And for your other point the dash mechanics implementation sucks so it's normally much better to just use a grapple cancle, and another point is that that golf cart has near instant full acceleration
Bench: doesn't use a mace because it isnt true melee
also bench: uses the ball o' hurt anyway
flails are 100% true melee and I will die on this hill
i mean you are hitting the enemy *with the weapon* and not a projectile so it is technically true melee

@@acerw7366 Internally, spears are also a projectiles (I once tried to mod a spear) and so are the terragrim and the arkhalis, so I think this isn't really the point of the true melee or not discussion.

I'm making a mod where I'm attempting to make true melee more viable, and potentially make all melee weapons true melee in the future, so this video will be useful to me. (Givl's Weapons)
Is it on browser or workshop? Tbh I've been formulating how to do the same but with an unorthodox method

There is a True Melee Enhanced but its mostly just damage and size buffs
I think we can define true melee like this:
1) Main hitbox of the weapon should be always in contact with players hitbox.
1-a) Even if spear hilts doesn’t have a damage hitbox, a spear’s sprite counts for the first rule. (Because they fit to the soul of true melee)
2) If the weapon has any secondary hitbox, it should always be in contact with the main hitbox or the character’s hitbox
2-a) If the secondary hitbox only spawns after the main hitbox damages the enemy, that weapon also counts for this rule.
Any weapon which fits these 2 rules count as a true melee in my opinion.
(Ball O Hurt shouldn’t be a true melee weapon but no one is blaming you for using it to get out of early game. Maybe minecart cheesing EoW might allowed you to kill it witout Ball O Hurt, cheesing is another debatable matter all together.)
if the spear hilt makes it true melee, why doesn't the flail chain?
Next time do a true melee, all enemy are replaced by day empress of light, spaw rate x3000, hardcore, 1hp, while being homeless, not paying taxes, all enemy have x1000 life and if u fail everyone die

You forgot Calamity Infernum Wrath of the Gods blindfolded steering wheel instead of controller or keyboard + constant Devourer of Gods’ spawning with said daytime EoLs.
@@AnalogHorrorNerdyou forgot that he will instatly get every debuff per milisecond, also that everything that needs to be crafted cost 10x materials, every natural chest is a locked biome chest, mining speed is 1, you instead need 10000 coins to stack it aka 10k copper = silver, 10k silver = 1 gold and 10k gold = 1 platinum, base luck is 0 and that theres 3% chance he dies of heart attack (ingame) per heartbeat

Lets be honest here- the community definition of true melee is entirely based on Calamity balance standard
Afterall, some true melee swords outreach some yoyos and flails.
To me a reasonable definition is that the physical weapon remains connected to the player and has a max length, and if it creates additional projectiles they must be spawned on hit.

The rain was super clutch for moonlord. Keeping the duke mount buffed helps so much so you dont need water/honey bubble areas

I always prep the arena with honey, heartlamp and campfire every few meters on my mastermode gameplay. Really changed the game. Great vid btw!
Doesn’t matter how close they are as long as you have the buff in the entire arena. The range is quite far

If you look the wiki spears and flails are projectiles just like boomerangs are even as a melee weapon
So if you say ball o hurt is true melee then you just can use Yoyos
I can see the argument behind "yeah but the weapon is not firing a projectile to deal damage" but you decide wich rules apply to your video and its completely fair if you have fun doing it. Good content i hope you keep going
that's not really a reliable method of deciding what counts as true melee and what doesn't, because spears are very clearly true melee, with the character holding the weapon and not firing any additional projectiles for most spears, but it's classified as a projectile anyways because the game spawns in a projectile when you click with a spear
Shortswords are also not true melee by that definition. I see why people don't think that flails and yoyos are true melee, but I feel that yoyos and ESPECIALLY flails are true melee. Melee isn't as projectile oriented as people make it out to be
For true melee I'm just going of whether the weapon makes contact while also being connected to the player. Flails are melee but boomerangs are not etc..

2. I know you use the Star Veil later on, but you don't use it for the mechs and Moon Lord but you definitely should. It's already amazing in a regular playthrough, but in challenges like these it's a life saver
Yeah I’m often pretty indecisive as to whether I wanna allow damage from accessories or not so I started using it pretty late
@@BenchTerraria Oh I get that I also used to prioritize damage accessories over movement/survivability ones but there comes a point where it just becomes cumbersome.

Really enjoying your videos. Gotta say as someone who uses the melee weapons like 90% of the time when I play, a BIG help is to setup heart statues on timers in your arenas. Ideally one on either side, or one in the middle. Then every lap you do, you can get a little recovery.
I swear, some seeds are just there to troll you with the loot they have. My last play through I got like 50 cloud in bottle. haha.
if horsemans blade is true melee doesn't that also mean bladetongue is true melee?
imo edge of night is a solid option for first mech boss while true melee, damage may be a little bit off but because of the range it is more consistant
Tip for mechs: fight the destroyer first with the nights edge and use the hallowed bars to make the Excalibur and gugnir for prime and twins

There's a funny quirk in which if u place a platform then blockswap it to a block in Retinazer's lasers can't hit u.
You can walk into a building and he can't hurt you. His Laser don't go through walls, so his second phase is ez to cheese as ANY other class but true melee.

You could have used Night’s Edge for mech bosses in my opinion. It still packs a punch in early hardmode.

Fun tip for plantera arenas. Flood the bottom of the arena at the start of building. It will fill up mobs spawns with fish (making the building less stressful) and it also nerfs the boss's spiky balls. Flooding with honey also works well.

I used up your luck when I made a legendary platinum sword a few days ago, first try, on a playthrough that was supposed to be mostly ranger
you made almost an hour long video and didn't lose my attention whatsoever. you make good content
If you try this again, I recommend the Dark Lance found in the Underworld as a WoF and early hardmode weapon. It is surprisingly powerful.
Now do it again in calamity (in all seriousness calamity adds a ton of accessories and weapons for the true melee class, the most apparent one being the murasama. I recommend u try it, it completely changes the experience)

Honestly I’d watch an hour-long video of you building. I really want to see your process since your style is a LOT more free-form than mine is.
When a lot of the melee weapons where reworked and the upside down seed released I did a mostly true melee run on the upside down seed in master mode.
Luckily I had a lot of practice with EoL at the time, so I did manage to defeat her with the true excalibur and the starlight made the Moonlord quite easy tbh, the damage output, even on a very defensive build, is actually insane

A bit tip: if you beat Momme of light, you can kill moonlord MUCH easier, just because her weapon have one of the highest mele DPS.

Small tip: the second best early hardmode wings if you are not willing to fight the ice golem are fairy wings, since you just have to farm a bunch of pixie dust and not grind for a low drop rate stuff

Now do True Melee only with the Calamity mod - on Revengeance or Death mode if you're previously experienced with the mod otherwise definitely on Reveneance to statt out.
When you're done that I'd suggest an addon mod for Calamity called Infernum.
Great editing and the humor wss on point at times - well done.
(The true melee in Calamity is _phenomenally_ fun - on par or better than Vanilla in a few areas of progression in the game)
