Avoid a person who is not religiously, politically, morally, compatible with you. Does she feel the same way as you about abortion? gun control? Obama? Trump? Here's an example: I knew a guy whose brother married a beautiful woman thinking they would have children one day. After they married, she told him she'd never have kids because it would mess up her figure. She got pregnant. He was very anti-abortion. She was very pro-abortion. She got an abortion without his knowledge or consent. A divorce quickly followed. I knew another woman who was very religious. Her husband was not. He continually pulled all kinds of dirty little tricks to keep her away from church like sabotaging her vehicle on Saturday so she couldn't go to church on Sunday or pretending to be sick on Sunday. Eventually they divorced over it.
Avoid control freaks. I had a friend from high school who got married to a control freak. Me and another mutual friend would plan things weeks or even months in advance like, "When that new Star Trek movie comes out, we'll all go to the really nice theater that's an hour and a half drive from here and watch it in style." His wife would be present when we made plans and would smile and nod and give her permission. We'd even invite her to go along with us if she liked. Without fail, on the day that we were to go do whatever, she'd get "sick" or pull all manner of tricks to get him to stay home. Eventually we stopped inviting him altogether. They divorced.
Avoid a person who has radically different ideas of how many children to have (or not have) and how to raise them. So many people think they can win over the other person but that sort of thing is all too often completely non-negotiable. I knew a woman who dated a man from her mid to late thirties, thinking he would be the father of her children only to find out after it was too late for her to have children that he had never intended to have any kids with her. He could have told her that up front. He knew it before they ever started dating. They were engaged for several years, but he kept putting off the marriage. He was waiting for her to get too old to have kids on purpose. She cancelled their engagement.
