    thank you for the idea of using "charred punkwood", I have tried charred pine and it took 2-3 seconds to get going with a lighter so no wonder all I achieved with my firesteel was to wear it down some more. I have also tried dry punkwood un-charred and it would not catch for me. I just tried the same punkwood only charred this time and it caught beautifully so I'm well pleased :-) I noticed the edges catch a lot easier than the middle so I shall concentrate my sparks there I think.

    that's exactly what I use, charred punk wood , I keep a tin full of it and hit it with a flint/ steel.
    From what I understand the old mountain men never carried char cloth.
    that was mainly used in the home(like for lamps) and would have been considered a wasteful luxury to carry into the wild. burning cloth was a last resort , even for home use.only the most used up rag would be burned over a flame to make char

    using pibne straw is cheating....LOL dont ya just love living in the south...you can find things laying around that will light up even when soaking wet.....Yes sir...we gots it made down here...Great Video brother..and great idea..I was thinking of making char from some punky wood that a fungus eat up...its so sofft you can poke ya finger through it...it should work real good when chared.
