This was a live they did on New Year's Eve in 1991 and was added to the Opiate EP. The only studio version available is in their demo cassette 72826 (again from 1991), so way before Undertow
I remember seeing these guys in 92 in a 200 capacity bar. And yep there was 200 of us. The energy was unreal. I must have lost 10 lbs from sweating. Nice review.

A B letter grade is a fair take! I really like Opiate as a live album. It’s more straightforward and aggressive, but that makes it easy to listen to. I don’t know if it’s true, but I remember a friend telling me that the “Bob Marley mother f*cker” was a joking reference to Zack De La Rocha from Rage Against the Machine. Tool & RATM go way back as friends, specifically the guitarists. However, Maynard was briefly featured on RATM’s “Know Your Enemy.”

I always appreciate when you whip it out, Mr. Heretic. . . your bass that is. I love all of Tool's catalog, minus some of the interludes, but their earlier, more aggressive stuff off the demos, EP and first LP is my favorite era. B seems like a fair enough grade to me; glad you enjoyed yourself with this cut, David.
