In this RV renovation video, we begin ripping out the 27-year-old carpet in our class c RV. Once all the carpet is removed, we'll be installing a floor made from reclaimed heat-treated pallet wood.
As you may be able to tell, we have very little hands on experience when it comes to construction or renovation. Our goal with this renovation is not only to create a super awesome off grid RV but to gain practical knowledge as we dive into each project.
RENOVATION TIP:
Make sure you you have a pair of needle nose pliers handy for this project. Not only do they help with gripping the carpet edges for cutting purposes but they are awesome for removing the staples and tacks that hold the carpeting down!
A few reasons why removing carpet in an RV is more difficult than removing carpet in a house:
1. RV manufacturers install the carpet in the rig FIRST and then install appliances, fixtures, drawers, cabinets, etc. ON TOP of the carpet. This means you have to either remove every appliance that's screwed in and glued to the walls and floor or do what we did - use a carpet/utility knife to cut around the cabinets and appliances to get the carpet out.
2. Glue, tacks, and staples are used to fasten the carpet to the plywood subfloor.
3. You're doing all of this in an extremely small space.

I know this is an older video, but it was nice seeing you struggle with the carpet removal. Made me feel better about myself. LOL. I removed the carpet in two areas of our Class A two years ago and remember it being a complete pain in the butt. I assumed I was doing something completely wrong... nope, it was just installed properly and made to stay there! Definite workout getting it all ripped up!!
I am really enjoying watching the transformation. Loved that you documented each part of the process. Thank you for sharing with us all. I am researching full time RVing and have been trying to watch others who are doing that process, so it's been really helpful to see you guys work at it.

I was searching for anyone who had tips on getting that stupid stuck carpet out from under the walls when I happened to find your videos. We are renovating a 1991 Four Winds that, despite being a different "brand" is identical to your RV. Ours leaked in the same areas and we had to rebuild the back room and cab over also. UGH! We did it exactly how you did your rebuild. To stop the leaking roof, we painted a very thick layer of Duck Coat on the roof and it seems to have stopped the leaking. We went with a rustic cabin theme for our RV and will use it just like a cabin on a lake somewhere! It was fun finding your videos and knowing we weren't the only ones in RV renovation hell.
I kind of feel bad watching y'all do all that hard work, especially since I'm just sitting here! My hubby & I appreciate y'all sharing all this info. We are fixing to do some RV projects ourselves. I've been using a composting toilet at the house for about two years. I started when I had to rebuild the sewer treatment tank. Saw a video that mentioned how there is no smell. Cat litter box smells so I doubted the claim and set out to prove them wrong. But it doesn't smell nor attract bugs.
It works for me because I have a ready source of sawdust/wood chips.

Yeaaah, tear it out the old filthy stuff! However tearing it out is the easier job, cutting new flooring to fit the edges can really get nerve wrecking...I guess you found out by now :D I like that you really take on the task to renovate it not only superficially but really dig deep! But this will be a big reward afterwards when you know everything is new and clean, no filth, no mold and so on! Big up :)

I literally just did this to my 1984 Fleetwood Jamboree which has a *ton* of water damage. I used a large vice grips to help me try the carpeting loose from the floor which helped a ton.

Your videos are such an inspiration! my husband and I just got married 2 wks ago and are buying a used class A GMC '85 sunstream. Much like yours it has water damage and needs a lot of work!
