The 2021 New York Mets Were Just An Illusion...

  • Another year, another collapse for my New York Mets. The 2021 edition of lolMets was a result of the illusion that this team was actually good enough to contend for the playoffs.
But since last year, the team has shown they can’t hit when it matters most. And because of injuries to key players like Jacob deGrom and Francisco Lindor, we get to see the root of the problems for the Mets.
It’s up to the new owner, Steve Cohen, to make major changes from the top down, if he ever wants to make the Mets ‘the Dodgers of the East Coast.’

The Mets are only responsable for their own collapse, not for any fan’s feelings. Ownership has done what they were supposed to. People’s feelings or expectations are their own. Yes, it’s a culture thing, of which we fans are a part of. So, let’s quit all this groveling and exhibit some elegance and sophistication as expected from anything New York-related. Rational criticism and a bit of anger are to be expected but without going overboard. Nobody guaranteed instant change.
LGFM but most of all, let’s get over it.

Great content and on point. I knew the Mets were gonna collapse as I watched them struggle to get runs all year and without strong pitching, they'd be second to last. Their decline began against the lowly Pirates right before the All-Star break, then the Marlins series was just downright embarrassing. I'm not sold on Rojas but Zach Scott (and Alderson) should share some of the blame. for not getting Kris Bryant at the deadline. Love em or hate em, you gotta respect the Yankees. They needed help so they went out and got Gallo AND Rizzo and now are only 4 games back.

I personally don’t think they need an overhaul in terms of players. They need a change in approach. No one has an idea at the plate. As far as pitching goes, with deGrom out the other pitchers have been trying to make up for it causing them to make mistakes.

    • @SportsGab
      @SportsGab  Před 2 lety

I agree that they need a change in approach foremost. But I think that will come with a significant overhaul in guys not named Lindor, Nimmo and Alonso. I wouldn't be surprised if guys like Mcneil, Dom, Conforto and Davis are all gone by next year

The meltdown started against the Pirates, right before the break, as usual, the West Coast visit was an incredible mess, as usual.
Are there not good doctors and physical trainers in all NY?, a player can be sensational but if he can only play half season he's useless.
This team has serious issues, and it's not about money.

Looking back at this after the season, it seems mostly fair. The Mets management vastly overrated this team offensively before the season. McCann proved he didn't deserve to be a starter; you can't turn a reserve into a starter by paying him starter money. But Lindor has gotten a free pass, and is still getting a free pass. This video talks about his big comeback from slumping that was ruined by a stint on the DL. But the truth is, that was only 11 games -- a very small sample. Take away those 11 games and he absolutely stunk. And no surprise there; Lindor's OPS had declined three straight seasons prior to his signing by the Mets, and in fact those three seasons he didn't resemble the player of the previous 3 seasons. This is a guy who was clearly spiraling downward offensively, and this is now his 4th straight season of declining OPS. How long until he's down at the Mendoza Line. Not very long I'm afraid. I predict he'll be released after five years with the Mets, and will go down as the worst free agent signing ever. You give big longterm contracts to guys just reaching the top of their career -- NOT to guys who are already spiraling downwards.

I'm going to be real and say that this new baseball with sabermetric and having pitcher's pitching to a, 100 pitch count is a problem from the start. The ideal starter would be a 200 inning pitcher. Syndergaard and Walker have never done it. deGrom, Carrasco once and Stroman twice but but both haven't done it since 2017.
From the start of the season the sabermetric Gods are looking at starters to go no less than 100 pitches or 6 innings. Basically 15 pitches per every inning. Now this is where cause and effect comes in to play with the sabermetric Gods. Sabermetric is all about number without the human element calculated in their numbers
You CAN NOT calculate the other teams approach to your estimation of that particular game. That's just freaking impossible unless, you are playing against another team that uses the same algorithm as you do which, seams like a lot of teams these days. It was so disgusting that MLB (who runs baseball) jumped head first with the new trend even when the sabermetric where down grading defense, base stealing, hit and run and bunting even when big time players were saying, that's ridicules. Wait a minute they did come up with an algorithm that said that, defense is very important. NO SH&T SHERLOCK! It only took you 10 plus years.
The best example of this is the 2013 to 16 Royals. They use sabermetrics against their opponents but used old style baseball on the diamond. They had outstanding defense, long relievers with short relivers, hit and run, base stealing. All this had a cause and effect against teams that were using sabermetrics.
You see guys, there is no algorithm against chaos. Chaos is a pure human element in which every individual player has his own way of approaching it. The kicker to this is that, one player can approach a certain play today and approach that same play tomorrow differently.
If you think this is BS then ask yourself why, the batter continues to pull the ball when the shift is obvious? You properly were like me and saying, what the F are you F'n blind? Can't you see that it's wide open on the other side of the F'n infield you knucklehead! It dawned to me years ago it was because of the genius Gods of sabermetrics. For those that haven't figured it out it's this. The defending team metrics tells the team defense to play a certain player to pull because the chart said that's what he does. Here's another cause and effect that comes in to play. The metrics shows that he's at his best when he pulls. So the batter is told to continue to pull while making himself look like an idiot as the guys upstairs are immune to the backlash.
Here's the joke, the geniuses upstairs know that their opponents have read the same book and are, going to follow the same logic which caused a conundrum. That conundrum is, a drop in runs scored throughout baseball. So some batting coach came up a way to beat the defense and that is, to hit over the infield defense and that is call, launch angel. That's right guys, that didn't work either as the runs scored did not increase but the strikeout rate did. The metric Gods don't care if you strikeout 200 time as long as your OPS is over 800.
Even Manfred has made comments about getting rid of the shift. Here's a guy who promoted sabermetrics because he thought that by doing so it would be the perfect structure to bring down the salaries while increasing owners pockets. How is that working out Manfred? LOL
