    Just a FYI to switching the AC for full power, it's not required to switch off as the FG is quite intuitive and will switch itself off when using over a certain percent of throttle, something like over 50% it will disengage the AC clutch for a reduced/optimised engine load

    The saddest day of my life was the day I had to say good bye to my beautiful 2008 FG XR6 with the 5 speed Auto. I owned that car 12 years and never spent a penny on it apart from regular servicing. That thing use to fly along down the highway and had great economy of around 8.5Lt/100 Kms. The only reason I sold it was I needed something bigger to carry all the gear I need. I'm now saving every penny to buy another one.

      @AlecBurman Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@mrpastanicknuggets7269 I'm a 5 speed owner for 12 years and I also have been quite happy with it. The first gear is quite high compared to the ZF and will stay there until about 90 kph . That can be handy for rolling acceleration which is what you are going to use in daily driving.
      There is quite a bit of negative comments about the 5 speed in the "boy racer" community. They want to drag strip off the mark so the lower ratio ZF is more popular for take off performance.
      Bruce Heinrech who is an expert tuner of FG falcons in Adelaide says that 90% of drivers cannot tell the difference between a 5 or 6 speed in normal daily driving. He has driven hundreds of them so he is well qualified to offer an opinion. Cheers.

    I bought an XR6 FG MkII a month or two ago for $6k. It had 282,XXX km when I purchased it (there are some tell tale signs it was used in rural areas) and at that price point I did have to sort out a few things and the body of the car isn’t A-grade (a few stone chips, scratches, etc.), but so far it has served me well. It’s my first car as well and I am very happy with it

    They are excellent and remarkably bullet proof, 2008-2009 fgs had a faulty gearbox, but how ever 2010-16 don't 6 speed auto shifts fast and comfortably while being reliable engine I've heard mountains of abuse at them and nothing broke on them, tough as nails, had a base 2010 fg Ute on my red ps, it was tough, currently got a 2013 mk2 xr6 good car so far I drive it hard and no issues 4000kms mind you I been driving it semi hard too

    ford made three versions of the fg barra engine, the gray top (one in the vid) is the base engine, you could also get the green top which had stronger crank and something else, then the red top which was the turbo, most people like to go with the green top since you can safely push 20psi of boost through no problem, and don’t have to buy new internals. great vid keep it up 👍

    I have a green one of this FG (2008-9) that is automatic, but has a sequential gear box (so you can drive in auto or put it in manual to play with the gears) and it is an absolute treat to drive. I love it, especially the "Kermit Green" colour - it's just unfortunate I have to sell/trade it for a 4WD with what I want to do - car only has 209 600 on the clock.. wish I could keep it... 😔

  • @rodneymcgiveron

    Thanks Jon for listening ...That's nearly what I've got . Mine is also totally standard but only has 74,000 kms on her and has the ZF 6 speed that is a joy in sports shift mode ..On a long run over 400 kms I got 8.1 L per 100 kms on a general drive without especially trying but didn't encounter long idles at roadworks that day either or much city stuff ..I know you'd see 0-100 in the high sixes with the auto but 7.5 in the manual is damn impressive . That surprised me but the Tremec 6 Manual is a great box ...The standard XR6 has a slightly stiffer roll rate suspension to the base Falcon too. Not a lot different but they do ride fractionally different I'm told . I hope one day you can try an FG with the ZF ...Thanks again .

      @@RossReviewsau Yep Jon .. Never been in a FG with a manual ..My first half dozen cars I ever owned were all manuals so I get it with driving a stick ..Got to say I'd love the Tremec manual in my XR6 but the ZF is the first sports shift auto I've had that I switch to that mode often because it's literally so much fun to use ..Everybody seems to reckon the N/A 195 and the LPG 198 non turbo via a well tuned ZF runs off the mark just that much quicker again but a sweet 6 speed manual would be incredibly satisfying . Would be interesting to find out how many FG XR6's got the Tremec ...Pretty exclusive few I'd say ..This review one is a beauty ..... I agree with a few other comments for suggesting for a review , especially for the turbo fans. That would be the 2.0 Turbo Falcon from the Series 2 FG ...Not too many sold but many say they were a pretty decent drive too with 179 KW which was a big jump from the SOHC Sixes .. Thanks again from a loyal Ross Reviews Tassie subscriber ...

    Hi, luv your reviews, I own a 2007 Ford Fairmont Ghia, 4.0 , just ticked over 59 thousand ks, bought it with 52 thousand on the clock 2 years ago, An old guy had traded it to buy a four wheel drive, It's metallic Blue with Cream leather, Excellent condition, except the wheels have been curbed ( which will get fixed next year) this is the 4th Fairmont Ghia I have owned, the last one being the 5.4 V8 , which I loved, but sold in New Zealand before moving to the Gold Coast, what I like about the Ghia is you get XR6 suspension, great engine, beautiful interior, Excellent sound system, Lovely cars, In my 5 years living on the Gold Coast, I have only ever seen 1 other Ghia as mine and that was Charcoal Grey, they are extremely rear now , Love to see a review of the last Ford Fairmont Ghia, ( You may have already done it ? ) Cheers Pete

    Ford article 2011::
    As part of the drive program, Ford set up two outwardly identical XR6 Falcons for a drag at the Broadford racing circuit north of Melbourne. For the first run, the writer drove the anonymous LPI version (car #2) and found it to be substantially faster than the petrol variant. Forget about launching the car, since the ability of individual drivers and a slightly wet track could result in different outcomes, but the LPI Falcon would progressively haul away from the petrol car on the move. It was a fairly clear demonstration of the LPI Falcon’s capacity to embarrass its petrol counterpart.
    Sitting in the cabin there was little sense of separation between the two cars (LPI and petrol), although the LPI car’s added torque below 2000rpm seemed to be the element that conferred that car’s performance advantage at launch and lower speeds. Drivers could simply roll onto the throttle, feed in the torque and avoid loss of traction.
    We only had one run in each car and there was little time to learn the intricacies of exploiting each car’s performance, but the results were plain enough. According to Ford’s PR team, the LPI version won every time out of the 14 races, which is no mean feat given the potential for variation among the drivers.
    Out on the road, while overtaking, the LPI Falcon delivered the sort of power and torque that would have been the preserve of Windsor V8s in the days of the AU Series Fords - about 10 years ago. There’s effortless acceleration on part throttle, but pushing the pedal all the way to the floor really delivers in a linear way, right across the rev range. It’s unrelentingly strong from zero revs through the mid-range into the peaky area around the redline. At least part of that must be due to the FG engine’s split-plenum inlet manifold and the transmission’s six forward ratios for optimum performance. Words like ‘forceful’ and ‘dramatic’ trickled into the driver’s mind as the Falcon jetted past slower cars.

    If I should return to the Falcon, it most likely would be a naturally aspirated XR6 or G6E from FG, FG2 or the FGX. Though, I was almost tempted by a low kms BF MkII auto but that has been bought by an astute purchaser. It had less that 40k kms and looked new.

    It's a dream to service and only a couple minor issues..He has the auto and 0-100 time is comparable to my bmw e82 but it was tuned and that was 6.4 sec..That floaty suspension makes a nice change on Sydney roads...My m-sport suspension although handles great you feel every minor bump...Other thing was he runs bone stock brakes and they are very responsive...Definitely a cheaper car to run 🙂

    You csn add about 40kw to the NA with an exhaust, intake and optimized tune for 98. It's not compromising the motor but simply getting it to run at peak efficiency.
    Once tuned for 98 you have to keep going for a more expensive fill at the pump but I prefer to run my cars on 98 anyway. Keeps the motor clean and pays itself back if you are keeping the car for the long haul.
    If you are going new the ,mods and tune will cost around the 3K mark. Other blokes have done it cheaper by sourcing the parts second hand and doing the work themselves.
    I had mine on a Dyno after a stock BA Turbo and it was only 2kw below the BA Turbo. Of course the BA can gain much more with tuning and is the obvious choice for those looking to go quick but for your everyday driver an NA with mods and tune is not a bad option and is pretty lively to drive especially if the Tuner goes for peak power in the low to mid range. Cheers.

    Great vid, I own a 2012 MK II XR 6 non turbo in the kinetic blue colour with snowflake rims and 117K on the odometer ....I love my car so much......I heard you mention in the video about differential bushes being a problem for the XR6s, my last service at Ford Dec' 2021 they mentioned I'd have to replace mine for the second time in the car's lifetime and I have had my car since brand new....( I have always had the car serviced and any mechanical repairs done at Ford...(aside from the diff' bushes once before, I have only had the windscreen wiper motor go on me)...being a 2012 model the car is out of warranty, is it worth replacing the bushes at an authorised Ford dealership for the near 2K they charge ? Thank you.

      No point in going to a Ford dealer for that mate.. just a good mechanic will sort you out for much cheaper 👍

    Try the auto version. An XT will do.
    The old 4.1 were known to achieve a million km in cab use. Rarely having cold starts was key.
