I just have to say that I really appreciate some no B.S., honest reviews. So many reviews of expensive items on CZcams just sound like advertisements for the product. I like hearing the good and the bad!

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 Před 2 měsíci

Yup. I think the difference between honest reviews and shill reviews is if they spent their own money on the product and receive no ad revenue from the company. Seems like most of the media is "access media." You get the products and the inside scoop, and in return, you always say good things about the product. This also goes for political journalism, as well.
That's one of the cool things about the current era. The establishment hates it, but the people like it, and it's a constant battle to keep the Internet independent.

I too have about 30 nights in my Skycamp mini 3. The feature upgrades on the 2.0 are well thought out and effective. Worth the upgrade...that will depend on the person.
I don't have the rubbing issue at the top of the ladder. Not sure why the difference?
There is room to store bags/pillows in the tent without stressing the hinges. They need to be toward the back and all is good.
Although I tried for a hot second the mattress in the 2, I thought the 3.0 mattress was an upgrade. Even so, I elected for the inflatable mattress...an extra couple of mins of mob/demob and worth every second. Worth it for everyone.. again, up to you, how you sleep and your pocketbook.
For the price, it is a steep increase from the Tepui Ruggedized Autana I came from. And that was a great RTT - not a single issue (other than the weight and extra setup/takedown time compared to the Skycamp).
Some of the upgrade cost goes to weight savings. Weight is the enemy and especially higher up. At 125 lbs, this thing is very light. I've had it in some snow, severe wind and no issues. Not affiliated in any way... just sharing my experience.
I find the ladder works best to collapse the top rungs as needed and not the middle or lower ones. I owned the Tepui for quite a while before I figured that out.

Amen Brother! I couldn’t agree more with your comments. Thankfully mine is a mini 1.0 and if I recall it was $3500. Totally stoked about having it in the beginning but now all I think about is how much it was in comparison to my REI passport ($250) ground tent. That tent even let’s me leave without basically breaking camp to use my ride. I purchased a exped mattress right away eventually ended up buying the new iKamper “Sleep System” for $350. Have slept on iKampers mattress one time and agree it’s like sleeping on the ground. Every day I use it I think about selling it to the next RTT desiring soul! Love hate relationship! Good luck on your journeys!

Happy belated birthday. Ive been putting off buying a roof tent because I on the one side dont eant to be disappointed spending 5k if i may not like something about it. Because in our ground tent, with our exped mega mat duo and sleeping bags we sleep like at home. However, it isnt a "quick" deploying tent. But thanks for your honesty, you stopped me once again from biting the bullet on a rtt, ikamper is just one of few premium ones I was kinda considering.

Good honest review. I have the same tent. Have not had the issues you have but a few other ones of my own. Just very minor personal gripes that I would not have if not for the price. However I did a lot of research before picking this tent and apples to apples I think this is a very good choice for my purpose. Overall quality is superior to the Chinese made brands. Hate the price point but the prices are ridiculous due to the overlanding craze going on. I also have a 4Runner, as well as a Tacoma and Outback and love that the Skycamp Mini’s light weight can be placed in any of my vehicles. Thanks for the tip in the ladder rubbing the rain fly. Happy trails.

Thanks for the video! We just ordered the skycamp 3.0, we currently have the Roof Nest Sparrow, we used it once and it is way to small, but so comfy. Our son is coming back to Louisiana from Virginia for Thanksgiving and we will put the Roof Nest on his Cross Trek will the Thule bars that I had on my Outback, so that will be his Birthday and Christmas present forever! :) I hate to hear that the mattress sucks, but we need the room. I wish it had LED lights, our Roof Nest does and it was way cheaper, but I can run some lights. We go on a big trip in three weeks to the Ozarks and I hope the tent is in, if not back to the small cramped one. :( I wonder if a pillow top mattress topper would help. 🤔

I understand that we look at things differently, and you can't sell us stuff just based on flashy marketing. No, you shouldn't have to put a rag in your $5,000 tent to keep it from rubbing into holes. At $5,000 someone should come to my house and fix stuff that gets messed up. I still want one but...I can't bring to spend the money. Not that I don't have it, but it is hard to justify that amount of money for a tent. Video would be superior if actual alternatives with equivalent quality and features were suggested that are actually cheaper. Price point of all the highly recommended brands are fairly comparable at this point.

Noobie here and from what I gather Ikamper is leaning hard on their name recognition.
Went to RackAttack to look at some RTTs in person. Yes Ikamper should be embarrassed at that cardboard mattress they include in that $5k tent. RackAttack also had a Roofnest rtt and the mattress they provide was what I’d expect from a $5k tent.

When i used one in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 at a friends rental unit. It was tagged as manufactured in N Korea. I thought wow id never get this in US- Haha wrong
But it was nice and quality - even 5’4” me could pop it out in dark ocean beach in Aberdeen or late roadside by Loc Ness… then to Glencoe. I did like the unit. Considering using it on my wrangler at home in US

You should have bought the underrated X-Cover 2.0 instead. It’s much better than the Skycamp. The X-Cover only takes maybe a minute longer in setup and breakdown than the skycamp. Way roomier too.

I hate our iKamper! For the money buy a Roofnest! Way better set up easier to open, way better mattress, wait till it rains and you get WET getting into the tent. POS for the money!

  • @Kiwiadventurerandoverlander

Agree with you 100% on the mattress issue for that price point is just not acceptable. Yes in Korea people sleep on hard surfaces and thin mattress etc but if ikamper is selling their tents on the international market, then they must cater for international market requirements and include a proper mattress within the current price point including also a proper condensation mat or equivalent.
Disclaimer - I do own a skycamp 3.0 and has to purchase the ikamper RTT comfort air mattress separately

Agree on the mattress. I have the 2.0 regular size. I’ve been using inflatable mattresses but it’s a pain, especially when it’s hot. I’d like to find a better solution that doesn’t involve an extra step. Thanks for the video.
