  • In today’s VLOG, Leaving the lakehouse, head into potential rain west towards the west coast. Some nature, interesting birds, deer, and skat on the side of the road. Talk about bike sounds (brakes, rhollof, clicking), and ride an awesome downhill, kept the rain at bay mostly. ran into an AMAZING bike hotel on the coast.

    A few people have suggested the scat/poop belongs to a masked palm civet (hakubishin) but we don't have those here in Hokkaido. Surprisingly, however, we do have raccoons because they were kept by people as pets in the wake of a popular cartoon called "Rascal" then many were discarded when the owners discovered that raccoons do not make particularly good pets! So, the scat in your video most likely belongs to a fox, a raccoon or the Japanese raccoon dog, a native species called "tanuki" in Japanese. It is often mistaken as a badger, to which it has no relation nor do we have any badgers in Hokkaido, and neither does it have any relation to the raccoon, an invasive species as already mentioned.
    Love your recumbent ride! Haven't seen many of those on the road here. You'll find more great cycling as you head north and I'll enjoy following you as you vlog.

      Martin Meadows I spent some time looking at scat last night (yay for fun-filled Saturday nights!) and I think it was Red Fox poop. It looked the closests and it's in the right type of area. They are much paler at this time of year, they lose most of the red and go a strawberry blonde colour.

  • @russellcoble9480
    @russellcoble9480 Před 7 lety

    Hey Matt...The scat (poop) might be from a fox (since you saw the warning signs along the road). Don't know anything about the wild cats mentioned by other subscribers. As for the sounds. The first is definitely from your spokes. It might be something as simple as spoke tension. A spoke wrench is a small investment and you should check your spoke tension frequently. The second sound coming from your Rohloff Speedhub....not sure. Recommend taking it to a shop and have them check it out. The third sound coming from your disc brakes is probably some sort of contamination from debris. I'd recommend regularly cleaning your rotors with disc brake cleaner. The pads could also have picked up oil or debris, but to adequately clean these you'll have to disassemble them. Try wiping your rotors and hopefully this will take care of the issue.

    Another great vlog with great drone shots as a bonus . I agree with the other comments here on the wheel noise , definitely a spoke issue . Not sure Matt if you have planned a regular maintenance program for your trike considering the mileage and all the rainy weather . You should give the trike a good going over from time to time . Bad things can happen in the worst places so far from a bike shop and a strong phone signal . Never forget this is your only mode of transportation . Always look forward to the next vlog Matt , JaYoe ..

  • @dodeblakley5621
    @dodeblakley5621 Před 7 lety +5

    As far as your noises go the wheel may be a broken or loose spoke. Tap each one in turn with a pen or something and the one with less tension will sound duller than the rest. A bike shop may be able to tension it for you. Your hub gear sounds like it's slightly out of adjustment small adjustments on the cable either way might make it better or worse. Keep note of the original position so you can go back if you have a problem. Generally tighten first as cables stretch but rarely contract unless you have had large changes in temperature.
    Alternatively Type in Rholoff cable adjustable into Google and download their PDF.

    • @Krieghandt
      @Krieghandt Před 7 lety +1

    The noise of the wheel is a spoke ringing merrily out of tension. All spokes pull the wheel rim towards the center hub, but when a spoke is at 6 o'clock it gets compressed since it is supporting the weight of the entire machine. Once it goes up again, the compression is released and the spoke is working on tension again. The periodic cycle of compression and tension is the reason why every wheel should be realigned twice: once when it's built and once again after it has been ridden a lot.

    • @MsCherade9
      @MsCherade9 Před 7 lety

      Sam Keyho There are only two species of wild cats found in Japan, one is the Iriomote Cat only found on Iriomote Island, the other the Leopard Cat which is only found on the Tsushima Island group (which is actually a small archipelago of islands between Busan in South Korea and Western Japan.
      It does make me wonder who that scat *does* belong to however. I think it's most likely to be the Red Fox which live all around in the woodlands of Hokkaido. It's a much paler colour at this time of year, but you are likely to see them get water at dawn and dusk at this time of year.

      @MsCherade9 Před 7 lety

      Zachary Mohrmann Japanese Giant Hornets kill between 30 and 40 people a year from basic anaphylaxic shock. You are extremely unlikely to ever get stung though, it's honeybees they want to catch and eat. The only time you need to worry if you get multiple stings, say more than 10. Most people aren't allergic to them though, same as any other bee or wasp.
      Am currently studying the fauna and flora of Japan for a project, am glad it lined up with this trip you're doing Matt. You're the only CZcamsr I know who is travelling over the whole country.

    • @zacharymohrmann4329
      @zacharymohrmann4329 Před 7 lety +1

      Well if you should get stung, get to the hospital lickedy split, as I hear that the sting of just one, will leave you agonizingly in pain... ! Best of luck, and Ja Yoe....! Ho...! You might think about adding a antihistamine to your road kit as well, it won't cure the sting but it should slow down the toxin in your body... Great Video Blogging by the way... I am enjoying seeing you make your way around Japan, and it's country side ...!

      Scuba Guy They kill about 30 people a year in Japan through anaphylaxis, which is only slightly larger proportion of people than the ordinary wasps here in the UK kill. Most of the people who die have multiple stings too, 10 or more. It's important to keep concerns like this in proportion, those wasps will only sting if you poke them, bash ithem or flap at them. They are much more interested in getting into bees nests and eating them.
